This would be a vbulletin error then, because the language filter gets applied when you view content, not before - and it is applied on PMs. If you're comfortable forwarding us the PM or sending us the PM id I could take a look - but it's sort of hard to do anything else without something to work with :P

Based on the PM, the word he said wasn't in the filter - It's likely the OP edited their post right after posting it and changed it to asterixes as so they wouldn't get in trouble. I've just added the word they said to the filter and it's now showing up as asterixes as it should be. Thanks for bringing this to our attention :)
