As the title says, what operating system do you think is the best?
I can start, and say I think Mac OSx is the best, because it is easy to work with, and it is very fast.
I think the bad thing with Mac, is the msn part, because Microsoft messenger don't work with Mac (Of course, lol) So you have to use other programs.
What operating system do you think is the best? :)
I can tell that your opinion is based on years of experience and a professional background so I regard it as truth thus my opinion is not needed.
Anyway, Mac OS is not the best, not by far. I choose Windows XP.

I enjoy using Mac OS X and have been contemplating going back for a while, but I have to say that right now my favourite OS is definitely Windows 7.
I don't like the fact that in Lion they have spliced together the Mac OS and iOS, but this is simply because I haven't tried these features out.
You can't really compare operating systems, since they're designed for different things.
Windows : For home use, media centers and enterprise (most large companies use windows/windows servers)
OS X: For 'making things' - there's a lot of tools aimed at creating photos, videos, music etc.
Linux: A lot of web servers use Linux, since it's lightweight and does't need a UI to be controlled.
Each OS has it's different purposes, and too compare them side by side, is like comparing a cheese grater to a spoon.
Besides, to use Windows, you can run it on any PC, to use OS X, you need a £600 minimum machine, which doesn't even include a monitor.

Bit in bold: If that was the case then OSX, Linux and Windows wouldn't be able to do the same tasks, work with the same hardware, work with the same printers and peripherals, play games, work with the same or similar hardware etc. etc. They're designed to do the same things differently, not "designed for different things" :P That's like saying Ford and Vauxhall are designed to do different things from each other, but in reality they're designed to look different. The main difference between all of them is support. Linux can work with anything because it's cool like that, Windows can work with most things and then you get OSX which only works with a small amount of things.
In short, your list is a bit dated and looks at Operating Systems in the wrong way. I have Photoshop on my Windows machine, I ought to be shot for that as it's clearly an enterprise OS. If anything, your list is based on what software each company produces - Windows/Microsoft = Office, Media and OSX/Apple = Creative suites. Linux = Robust.
Anyway, back on topic. Windows 7 is probably the best in my opinion. It's customisable, looks good, works with everything I use and handles well. All I need from an OS :P
This is clearly going to turn into a OS war.
But for general everyday use, Windows 7 is the best. It's faster than, easier to use, friendlier towards power users and more productive than OS X (yes, I do have a Mac).
For server use it has to be CentOS/RHEL.

Windows, because I've grown up with it, it does what I want it to do and I use it at work/home/school.

Microsoft is easy to use especially windows 7 then again on my mac theres alot you can do. But i think it takes much longer to get used to a mac and generally I know that mac may be faster but windows for me !!! and i dont use my mac as much as my laptop.

A computer is only as fast as you make it. People always say Macs are faster but I'm sure you could make a PC the same speed if not even faster. Someone actually told me once, Apple said they are meant to be faster ha, their hardly going to say the opposite.
Windows is my favourite because it does it all. Most software and games are for the PC and while yes Mac might be catching up it still has a bit to go. There also cheaper, easier to upgrade and so in turn get the most out of it and business wise they are more handy.

I hate OS arguments :P My personal favourite is Mac OS X though -hides from angry Windows fanboys/girls-
Windows 7. Hate Osx interface and the poor game support and most of the programs I used dont have native support
Windows 7 Home Premium, x64 :-)

By the way, this is for the single purpose to annoy Tom:
OS X is clearly the best OS. First, it runs on magic so it wont ever get slow. Second it us wayyy better for multimedia activities because it is a mac. Third it's pretty. Windows basically looks like someone got to excited on mspaint but os x looks pretty! You get upgrades like to snow leopard for the low low price of just 30 smackers. Now we have lion which basically revolutionized the OS world. Also OS X is much better because steve jobs runs apple and hes a death defying god.
On a more serious note though, no OS is better but I do prefer OS X :)

Windows XP and Windows 7 are my favourites. Windows Vista was a disaster, however!

You're probably being slightly sarcastic, but IDC.

What??? (also, my Windows 7 isn't slow and never will be).
Second it us wayyy better for multimedia activities because it is a mac.
Just isn't true except for some very specific software packages which are Mac only.
Third it's pretty. Windows basically looks like someone got to excited on mspaint but os x looks pretty!
Windows 7 looks better IMO and the design is far better for productivity.

You have to pay for what is basically a service pack. How much was SP1 on 7?

App store. Removing more of the already limited freedom on OS X.

Perhaps you should read my spoiler - I wasn't being serious. So instead of exploiting a fanboy, it seems you've made yourself into one :P

I would never use Internet Explorer and I would never buy an overprices screen or HDD from Apple so I would never affiliate myself with fanboyism.
Also Nick you think Windows 7 looks better? Well - I guess not everyone has a sense of style ;)

I did read it. I'm expelling some confusion that others may obtain from your post.
PS: not a fanboy. Make logical decisions based on facts.

You were expelling some confusion if the definition of that phrase means I didn't know you were not being serious.
Now at the end of the day if you like the Windows UI and I prefer the OS X UI that's all fine and dandy. But you're the one kicking up a fuss here - me? Not so much.
