Yeah that's what loads of my friends are saying but it works fine for me hmm, maybe it'll function better if you install the new video calling chat plug-in?

Ah I use it now and then, it would be worse if it was advanced, what would be the point? we already have msn

Maybe because the annoying piece of **** just pops up on my screen and takes up a quarter of the page and even when I hide it, if I open up facebook again the trash just shows back again. I have to sign off chat to get it to go away >;[

This was predicted to occur for a while now. This is what happens when facebook, and other sites, try and get clever with activity tracking. You may notice that the people it lists are the people who you have recently interacted with, be it commenting on something they do or even just looking at their profile or a photo.

Basically it's facebook telling you who you want to speak to and hiding the people it thinks you don't.

The same thing is happening with other sites. For example in a test one person who is left wing and one person who is right wing were asked to make an identical politically related google search on their PCs, the results were tailored to their political preference and were different for each person.

In my opinion this use of our activity and data is limiting what we see and do on the internet, defeating the entire concept of the world wide web.

This can also have consequences for people's social lives too, e.g. perhaps someone was waiting for someone to come online on facebook, but facebook never showed that person as online. The amount of social damage little things like this could do isn't even measureable, point of facebook defeated?

I didn't mind the new one (even though it only showed the contacts it thought you would want to talk to)

But the newer one, with the sort of quick updates above it - is absolutely crap. You now see even less friends you want to talk to.

Mine is awful. I use Firefox and it doesn't let me scroll through or see all the people online -- ballache!!

peteyt
17-07-2011, 03:45 AM
This to me is just stupid. Okay its a partly good idea, but if anything it should be optional e.g. a setting to see all or just recent.

Facebook should let me see who's on because I want to scroll through my list. Sometimes I like to see who's on and talk to people who I haven't for ages.

Yeah I have the latest windows live messenger which shows me all but facebook chat should do to as a lot don't have the latest WLM.

I've changed my mind on some changes in the past, but I'm pretty sure I know I'll always prefer to see everyone online over this.

This has got even worse! For some reason I always get Facebook updates first and the sidebar on the right has now HALVED, it now displays a useless news feed info in the top half and about 10-15 of my most contacted friends underneath (even less than before!)

Utterly ******* useless, whilst I'd ideally stop using Facebook Chat, it's the only IM people use these days so I'm going to have to use some third party client or stick to it on the iPod Touch.

Why on earth can't it just show a list of my friends online?

Here it is;

For my facebook chat i'm now using pidgin. Much better.

For those who hate the new facebook chat download Pidgin http://sourceforge.net/projects/pidgin/files/Pidgin/2.9.0/pidgin-2.9.0.exe/download (http://sourceforge.net/projects/pidgin/files/Pidgin/2.9.0/pidgin-2.9.0.exe/download) and then fill out your fb user info (instructions here: http://www.facebook.com/sitetour/chat.php?jabber_client=1 (http://www.facebook.com/sitetour/chat.php?jabber_client=1)) and there you have your fb chat in msn style, and shows everybody that is online too. I think you can even pick to show yourself as away with it too.

Facebook needs to really have some kind of feedback thing. Instead of just rolling out updates I'd like them to maybe even do beta testing where people have to sign up and leave detailed information.

I say detailed as to prevent people going on and just saying it is crap. As I mentioned this new chat could work, but only in my opinion if it was optional. It's handy if you only talk to certain people, but when I did run my own online station which should be back up in September, I used chat as one of many ways to advertise.

I think they're fools not to do extensive beta testing with a site that size. I've seen too many features released in the past that were buggy.
Also I think feedback would be a brilliant idea. Facebook has polls so they ought to use them to find out if people like what they're doing.

Yeah the only problem with that is a lot of people hate change. I'm not sure if anyone remembers the old facebook which was a bit like MySpace where applications where on your profile's main page along with your wall and info. It was such a mess and I hated it and I was go glad when they changed it but a lot of people moaned.

I'd rather have some kind of beta, polls are okay, but a lot of people are going to say they hate it just because they hate change.

This is why some people get the changes instantly and some don't, they roll it out progressively to account for issues further down in the rollout, for example, mobile companies roll out to employees, and then a select group of the public, and then another public group and so on.

Yeah but they don't really take opinions. It's okay trying to make sure there's no bugs, but if no one likes the update then fixing bugs is going to be a waste of time.

There's lots of stuff facebook can do, but it needs to find out what people want. Develop something, put it in beta, get people to try it and get their feedback, and if people do like it then roll it out.

Obviously it's better than rolling out to everyone at once, but they should at least allow people to opt out of being a guinea-pig.

Skype? Messages? Phones? Facebook Wall? if they person is online they will talk to you, you can still go onto the persons facebook profile and see if they are online if so you can start a chat with them, simple as that. People really don't like change do they.
