Ever since my mum transferred against my will from Virgin Media to Sky I've been having trouble with my internet speed dwindling and fluctuating. I'm using a wireless router with a Netgear wireless dongle (WIIIv2) and it's constantly going from green (which is "strong" connection) to yellow (considerably lower strength). Any time this happens I'll be disconnected from any online game I happen to be playing, or if I'm using Youtube the video will stop and often crash the page.
My Sky router is downstairs and the computer I'm using is upstairs in the computer room. When I first changed my ISP I had problems with the wireless adapter picking up anything but WEP and I was advised to keep my connection on WEP. It's a horrible idea but it's the only thing that works, it appears that it is WEP or nothing for me. I can't have a wired connection because my step-dad isn't up to the task of putting a wire from bedroom to living room.
Sky only gave me one BT box which is the one I'm using downstairs. It's a complete nightmare having a main line downstairs when you base your desktop upstairs. I'd be happy to have the box next door changed into a BT line (it's currently an inactive telewest box) because then I'd be able to resume with my wired connection, which is obviously stronger. Here is a picture of what my Netgear assistant shows, notice how the bars beside signal are almost full, these will dwindle often from two to the shown five.

I have no idea what to do or how to fix the issue, I'm completely fed up with Sky wireless and the whole set up I must run to use the internet. Any reasonable replies will receive 10rep!

Remove the Netgear Wireless Assistant crap and let Windows manage the connection and change the wireless channel to something like 6 or 12 in your router settings. Is your router/PC near a microwave? That could be your issue.

I'm not looking to buy any new hardware yet, I'd like to solve the issue with the adapter I'm using at the moment if possible.

I had a modem with Virgin Media.

My router is downstairs and my PC is upstairs. There is a microwave in the kitchen but that's through a solid wall, a good ten feet away from the router. My desktop doesn't have a wireless card built in, nor does it have any Wireless manager type programme as default.

At the green: Use a USB Dongle?
Red: yes, yes it does, Its the one that's built into windows and comes with every computer, uninstall the crap you have on it now and the much better windows one will take over.

Wireless connectivity isn't SKY's issue.
So having a terrible ping is my fault?
