Protecting blocks on Multiplayer...

hello lads and ladies

ive got a multiplayer with about 10 people on (not all on at once) and was wondering if it was possible to make it so that only a few people (say ops) can destroy blocks?

im making an rpg(ish) world so by having this ability, it would make everything a whole lot easier.

is it also possible to only allow people to build in a certain area?

Yes it is possible, you'll need to download some mods to do so though.

I'm not sure if this is the best mod for the job, or if you need to download things to make it work etc, but iZone is one to create zones that people can build in/can't build in.

How do you download iZone? Do you need to download Bukkit?

I've never properly used mods before sorry. lol.

It's good to do this, but there are problems with it though. People can make mistakes and it will be hard to edit your own buildings etc.

Soz I'm a noob at that :( I just have been on servers where my stuff is saved but I can't edit it or even if I can't remove, but can add, people just muck it up by adding stuff to your designs.

I don't really see a solution without it's faults. I think just frequent backing up is good.

Okay well mate :) first thing to do is download craft bukkit. Every sever should run this as it backups logs and does multiple brilliant things. If its with ur best friends you can run without it but to stop griefing etc run craft bukkit. The next thing is to download something called "Permissions" which uses craft bukkit :) but i have to warn you!!! It is ridiculously complicated to use but there are guides on youtube and manuals but being the self arrogant person I am, I learnt by myself. Permissions allows you to create multiple groups and place people so new people joining server can be in a group called "Slave" which cant destroy build or do anything. And you just upgrade people as you go, you can ban people from using commands to destroying blocks, also even blocking commands to other mods like citizens or iconomy or iland or anything. Just take your time with Permissions is complicated but REALLY REALLY EFFECTIVE when you know how to use it . GOOD LUCK!

Yeah use Craftbukkit and Essentials, but you could also use World Guard. They're both very good options for protecting blocks and areas of blocks.

Also is there a plugin that allowed me to protect the entire world (or a vast area of land that I'd selected) and then make areas inside that zone to which I can allow other people to build and delete things?

Say I built loads of houses, didn't want anyone to destroy them, but if someone bought one of them, I could make a zone over that house to allow them to build?

I mean it would just be a WHOLE lot easier than protecting individual areas between houses, towns, building etc.
