I kinda dumb & this...

Basically, my mum has a PC, I have a laptop. She uses that lil' yellow cable to connect to our ISP, i use wireless.

When she goes on things such as imvu (she talks to our family in america on it; i've checked) my connection slows down and it's annoying especially when I am on my xbox.

What's a solution to solve this???

Check what sort of speeds you're getting both on your mum's PC and your laptop on here: http://speedtest.net/

If both results are quite low it could suggest your broadband package isn't really for heavy/multiple users, especially with someone on Xbox Live.

If the results are wildly different it could mean you're at a disadvantage with either using the laptop (better WiFi dongle/card needed perhaps) or using wireless over wired (interference, distance etc.)

Post your results if you can, IMVU doesn't sound too internet heavy but I don't see the benefit of using it to talk to distant relatives, sounds like a job for Skype etc.

Good luck getting to the bottom of it!

I don't see why IMVU should slow anything down, check to make sure none of your family are downloading etc.

Thats not the worst internet - i suggest connecting via wire while shes on IMVU and possbily even getting a belkin wireless router that is capable of 8mb/s speeds and gaming.

1. Don't buy a Belkin router
2. Any router from after like 2002 is capable of 8Mbp/s up/down internal/external
3. Switching to wired might not be a bad idea.

The exact problem happened to me with the xbox but it kicked everyone off the wireless when the xbox was on, contact your isp, mine fixed the settings so the wired and wireless have equal access.

Just, no, I don't even care what you say, your ISP did not do that. a) conventional routers don't work like that b) generally ISPs can't touch your router config remotely

Well they fixed it for me without physically touching anything.

I'm on a new package which is 100mb/s so it could be dif

I'm a computer a gaming salesperson and we only stock Belkin routers, other ones are pretty basic and cost. I also know we have routers that arent capable of those speeds so i thought i'd throw it in there. Also, i suggested switching to wired and using a router as an alternative. Don't get me wrong but

You lost me there. You're selling crap and I wouldn't go to you to buy anything. Belkin are utter tripe and if a router isn't capable of pulling 8Mbps down there is something seriously wrong. Linksys/Cisco and Neatgear both cost more than a Belkin router, you get what you pay for.

Best way to fix this: QoS. If your router doesn't have QoS functions, ugrade your firmware to a modified 3rd party one, for example DD-WRT. This is what I'm using on my router, it adds a lot more functionality to your once dying router.
