I got a new compaq laptop the other day as my last one is now dead. I've only added a few programs on it so far such as Photoshop, ITunes, BitTorrent and Google Chrome.
When I go to my computer it says there's 230gb free out of 281gb(which is weird anyway cause it should be 320gb), which means just under 50gb is being used for no reason?
Does anyone have any idea why it says this?
I've tried uninstalling programs but they're just taking it down little bits.
I'm running windows 7 if this matters?

Does it have a recovery partition? that will take some.

I work with computers for a living and I have never heard of anything like this. It may look like there is a hardware problem, I would return it to the store and ask what they think whats wrong with it, but it looks to me like a error that cant be fixed
Sorry if its not much help m8 and what the person said above, recovery may take some but not all that lot? S:

Yeah but that only takes up 16gb, so there's over 30gb still floating about somewhere.

Normal. Not an issue.

I would not class this as normal @Robbie. I have no idea, maybe take it back to the store? :s
It's probably just a case of maybe a previous owner doing things to it and adding things. If it's brand new it may be space which isn't used and your hard drive just needs to be extended.

It could be a hidden partition, some manufacturers keep a failsafe where the laptop can be restored to a factory state, so the unaccounted space is possibly for that purpose. My Dell seems to hog quite a lot of 'mystery' space.

It could be this if I am honest, but then again if he wiped it it would have been removed. Just do a disc defragmentation, should get rid of most stuff m8 (;

My C drive is 439GB, Recovery is 25GB. That's 464GB accounted for, the drive is 500GB. It is normal.
Run Disk Manager to see where the space is going (diskmgmt.msc)

Do you even know what disk defragmentation does?

Yes, it gets rid of all the stuff that is in the laptop that is not needed, for example files that have been deleted but yet some parts still remain, or thats what I was told at college m8 :)

Do you know anything? Just a general question, I'm now fed up of seeing you in threads offering useless information.

If this is your job and you don't think this is normal then you' got some learnin' to.
"I work with computer networks for a living"... and I say It's perfectly normal, you'll have 100mb on a system partition for Windows 7, you'll have a recovery partition of about 20GB to reinstall Windows 7 and then you'll have drive formatting.
EDIT: @James, if you think defragmenting removes files, I'm worried. LOL

Okay, well you've been taught ********! I agree Tom, I too am worried.
Defragmentation is the process of moving non-contiguous clusters into contiguous blocks, it has nothing to do with the removal of files.

This is normal for any hard drive because of how the manufacturer create the drives and how the operating system read the bytes on the disk since 1GB != 1000MB as 1GB = 1024MB. So i think the manufacturer create the disks to have 320000MB instead of 327680MB and 320000MB would be 312.5GB.
This is what I've read somewhere a while back. Might not be true since it was a long time ago I read it.

Don't worry, that is normal.
When I was adding windows 7 to my computer the first time I installed it, it didn't install properly and said that I had used up all my space in my hardrive, I re-installed it and it worked fine after that. So this is normal, as long as the amount of space is close to what It's supposed to be.
@ oleh: ??? da ****
