So a while back I bought a DVD/CD Drive from maplin and had nothing but problems and had to replacements. It was either not reading anything/being detected at all or stuttering.

it was a S-ATA drive so while waiting for the replacement I bought an IDE one because my motherboard has both leads and was told you could use a S-ATA hard drive with a IDE CD/DVD drive.

So I bought a LG Super Multi DVD Rewriter model GH22NP20 and it seemed to work but not for long at all. It would read CDs and so on and I could rip them to my pc but every time I did, I needed to then power down and disconnect the drive, plug it back in to rip another CD.

This was ages ago and I decided to finally take out the replacement I had forgotten about, a Samsung SH-S223 - the S-ATA one. It detected a disc, the disc that came with it but when trying to launch the exe the cd/dvd drive decided to disappear from my computer and now doesn't seem to want to come up at all. However I checked BIOS and saw the cd/dvd device.

I've tried swapping the leads and stuff and nothing seems to work and can't really understand what could be the problem.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks.

There could be an issue with your motherboard. How old is your computer?

if he had a problem with his motherboard the whole system would likely have issues it could be a missing driver or that its not installed correctly.

It's a few years old now so a bit old. I found this last night and tried it http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w7itprohardware/thread/9e7ee260-4be7-42dd-865b-753e273fd800 and did the registry thing and rebooted pc. Window's detected the driver installed it and it came up but when I tried to load a CD it just froze, then yet again the drive just vanished saying it couldn't be found.

I heard it could be a faulty motherboard/SATA controller - Is there any way to actually identify this as there's a chance it could just be the make. I just don't want to buy a new cd drive from another company if there's a chance it will never work.

Also the other cd drive that does work is pretty confusing as I have to keep unplugging. It will usually pick up the CD but never be able to rip it or sometimes just tell me a cd is blank. This is IDE though so is using different leads.

I bought a replacement a different LG that is S-ATA and while it was slow at first seems to be working managed to put a few CD's on. It seems to occasionally stutter when first playing a CD but then goes normal. Hopefully this will last :D

Thanks all
