A few days ago I was laughing and I got really bad hiccups, usually I can get rid of my hiccups by holding my breath or drinking water. This time however they were quite violent (if you could call them that) hiccups and I got a sharp pain in my chest with each one. Eventually I got rid of them by eating a banana but since then I've been getting this really really sharp pain in my chest, almost like the feeling you get when you've eaten something too fast and you get that pain in your chest for 5 seconds as the food slowly goes down. It's quite scary because the pain is very sharp and it's sometimes difficult to take a breath, the only thing that lessens the pain is when I sit down and rest my head on my knees.

I went to the doctors yesterday morning, and she did all of the tests on me and she said the only thing wrong is that my breath is weaker (I had to blow into that tube thing) and below what my normal average is. I'm not really surprised because my breath has become more raspy and my throat is quite sore. She said my breathing and everything else was fine. So she told me to take my inhaler 4 times a day with 2 puffs each time. Yesterday I took my inhaler when I got the pains and it did absolutely nothing, I'm sure they're supposed to be fast working as if you're having an asthma attack you don't have time to wait for it to start working...

I think it might be indigestion, because the pain is in the area where my food goes down. It's like something is stuck in my food pipe but I'm still able to eat food without any pain so it can't be. The pain is worst at night but even as I type this there's a slight pain in my chest. I've tried drinking lots of water and warm milk and although that provides temporary relief the pain still resurfaces, is there a medicine or something I can take to get rid of it altogether, I'm beginning to dread going to bed at night :(

I've just researched it on the NHS site and I have a few symptoms,
pain when swallowing
nausea
persistent cough
tooth decay
laryngitis (inflammation of the larynx), which causes throat pain and your voice to become hoarse

I would never have thought of heartburn, I'll get some Gaviscon and see if that helps, thanks for the suggestion!

EDIT: It also says 'If you have asthma and GORD, your asthma symptoms may get worse as a result of the stomach acid irritating your airways.' which would explain why the doctor suggested I take my inhaler more.

you sure its not heartburn?

This is natural. Everybody has this once in a while, unfort for me, i have it all the time. Once it was so bad i could bearly breath all day and ended up in hospital. Usually happens behind the left side of my ribs or sometimes above. All i can say is, you wont die, because it is a natural thing, but.. Nobody ever knows what causes it. Not even doctors.
