I'd be so cross if I'd paid £429.99 for one!

Also hoping this will spread to the UK.

Not fussed about webos and whatever, but at that price? You would be a mug to not have it haha

the browser on it supports flash and has a similar rendering engine to that of Android. I think for $150 it's a great deal even if I just use it for internet, music, movies. It's less expensive than many ebook readers, 32gb mp3 players and even digital picture frames :P

I would still prefer Android personally, since obviously Android is going someone. But for the price they are selling them at I would DEFINITELY buy, and probably donate a bit to anyone who got Android working on it. Hoping for this in the UK, if you see something on engadget saying they are doing it in the UK, please PM me haha :P (In case I miss it xD)

Android would be fantastic and here's hoping the project is a success, but as I said WebOS is a browser, music video player and reads ebooks which is damn fine for $150 to me :P

I was about to laugh at whoever had wasted a fortune on one of these devices when they could of bought an iPad or laptop but at that price it's a hell of a bargain, very nice buy you've got there ;)

I have to hand it to HP though. They released a memo to all retail stores carrying the TouchPad requesting the return policy be extended upto 60 days, and also requested that stores give partial refunds to those whom bought them for expensive prices.

What I can't get over still is that they bought Palm in the first place. It surprised me so much and I thought it would fail in the end. I never once expected HP to do what they're doing now, and I certainly didn't expect a 20% stock drop. I think HP has surprised a lot of people. This firesale as it's being called by many people was so serious it was nigh on impossible to access retail store websites such as BestBuy, Futureshop or even the HP website over here. Boxing day sales here are huge and normally on Christmas Eve the deals begin online. Retailer websites consistently experience downtime due to high traffic during such sales but I have never seen such havoc and scramble even at a boxing day sale, as I have seen these past two days for the TouchPad. I ended up spending countless hours trying to purchase a TouchPad 32GB at the discounted price and when I finally did I later got an email saying my order was cancelled (there was also a lot of that happening as there was some general confusion where some retailers actually ended up sending their inventory back to HP). I finally got another one today directly from HP and also helped several friends nab some for themselves. We were some of the first to buy from the HP.ca site so we're fairly certain we have them in the bag and that our orders wont be cancelled this time around.

As I was saying before there are digital picture frames more expensive than $99. There are 32GB MP3 players more expensive than $149. Ebook readers can go into the $300 range and beyond. Even if I hate WebOS to utter death this was still an absolutely amazing steal. The browser on WebOS has a webkit engine similar to the one in Android so even for a dual core 1GB ram multi touch web browser this was an amazing deal. The fact that there's allegedly already a team trying to fork Android onto the thing is just icing on the cake at this point :P

The best I can find in the UK is; http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0057MY692/ref=noref?ie=UTF8&s=computers&psc=1

Which is down from yesterday, but still poor compared to your guys sale!

Yeah, I managed to get mine reserved at 10:52am yesterday morning, although a couple of hours later no more were available from ANY stores near me. Got quite lucky really.
I also tried to order online (in case workers stole my reservation), but I couldn't get past the payment stages.

How annoying. If I left it one day I could of popped into Staples to get what I needed and a cheap TouchPad. The one near me is virtually empty 99.9% of the time because the planning office for my local council made an inner-city one making the outer-city one defunct and useless to get to :P

He's a derp. It may only be for people who've got orders placed since they weren't specific with me on that, but they are definitely getting them in. Currys & PC World might yknow... I wouldn't be surprised. Argos ain't got anymore, Play I don't think have any, pretty much everywhere is sold out now. I dunno whats going on with the rest of the world though and whether places like Germany & Switzerland are getting the discount, I said to my mate in Switzerland about HP and he was like "What when?". Really no idea.

Dear DirectDial.com Customer:

Thank you for your recent purchase with DirectDial.com for a HP Touchpad Tablet Computer with webOS.

In the AM of Tuesday, August 23rd, we were advised of the tremendous price decrease on the various HP Touchpad models. After posting the revised price to DirectDial.com we were inundated with orders. By the close of business DirectDial.com had sold over 7,000 units. We have been overwhelmed with the popularity/success of this promotion, as has Hewlett-Packard Canada.

Your order has been received by our system and therefore you are in the HP Canada Touchpad queue. This is not a guarantee we will be able to ship your order. Your credit card has not been charged any fees. Your credit card will not be billed until the order has been confirmed for shipment to you.

Over the last several days there has been a lot of miss-information on the quantities available of the various Touchpad models from both HP Canada and our various authorized distributors. It is therefore very difficult to project the number of units we will be able to secure over the next week or so. We are currently working with HP (Canada) to secure as many units as we can to fulfill the current orders in our system. All orders will be shipped on a first-come/first-shipped basis and limited to 1-unit per customer as stock is allocated.

According to our information, the Canadian market is receiving several thousand Touchpad units next week. All are spoken for and many will be shipped to DirectDial.com and other major authorized HP retailers. At this point we don’t know if there will be another shipment into Canada or when. However we have been advised there is inventory in transit from overseas. Again it is unclear how reliable this information is. At this time we are not accepting any new orders on HP Touchpads.

As orders begin shipping we will contact you via phone to ensure you still wish to receive your order. If you wish to cancel your order please forward an e-mail to [email protected] with “Please cancel order confirmation number Your Order Number” in the heading. We will reply confirming your cancellation.

Personally I have been a part of the computer industry for over 25 years. In that time I do not believe I have witnessed an event quite like this. We appreciate your patience in this most unusual time in our industry.

Regards,

Greg Bruzas

Interesting, and I am very hopeful!

It's official: HP to bring back TouchPad for "encore." Story coming soon on CNET. #cnet

(From Twitter)

Edit:

"A limited supply are coming and it will be a few weeks before they are available. As we know more about how, when, and where TouchPads will be available, we will communicate that here and through e-mail to those who requested notification," said Mark Budgell, public relations manager at HP.

"HP will be manufacturing a limited quantity of TouchPads with WebOS during our fourth fiscal quarter 2011, which ends October 31," he said.

But the company will not continue to make more TouchPads following this production run to meet demand. "HP is discontinuing the development of WebOS devices and is winding down device operations within our fourth fiscal quarter 2011," he wrote.

Regarding price, he said that "some retailers won't price match or drop their price to $99. Each retailer will manage their own policy and process regarding pricing and price matching. Please contact the local retailer of your choice to see what their current position is."

Really! Is that running within WebOS just as an x window system or are you only running whatever distro it is? How's the battery life?

Tomm

Ubuntu with LXDE (lower resource use) but it should have no problems running Gnome, KDE, Unity or any other desktop manager as long as its compiled for ARM. It runs in a chroot jail within WebOS and XServer actually runs as a WebOS card meaning you can use both WebOS and Ubuntu at the same time and switch between them like any other application on the tablet. It can run any Linux application that is compiled for ARM (Ubuntu's default repositories currently list 32,090 available packages for ARM) or if its not then you can try crosscompiling it yourself.

Edit: Battery life is excellent. Been using it almost none stop with both WiFi and bluetooth (for BT keyboard which I also picked up at a massive discount xD) on since I took it off charge 4 and a half hours ago and its currently at 79%.

Not yet, but it should be possible soon. However, I think I prefer it this way as you get the best of both at the same time.

The reason I am hesitant is because I would presume running it within WebOS or even gnome or kde as an x window system within the OS would have a negative impact on the battery life of the device. I guess I'll determine my preference when mine arrives.
