Celebrations in Benghazi as the end seemingly approaches

Rebel forces were within 6 miles of Tripoli city centre this evening as anti-Gaddafi forces launched a significant offensive on the Libyan capital. Reports said that the forces met no resistance as they entered the city from the west, with around 25,000 soldiers advancing. The move into the city follows last night's heavy fighting in the city involving the rebels and troops loyal to Colonel Gaddafi. A government official in the city said that 376 people died in last night's clashes while 1,000 were injured on both sides.

Friends forever: Gaddafi has ruled Libya for decades with the help of the west

Gaddafi has vowed to remain in the city until the end, but tonight there were reports of clashes close to his compound. State television aired an angry audio message from the Libyan leader tonight, as he urged families in Tripoli to arm themselves and fight for the capital. 'The time is now to fight for your politics, your oil, your land,' he said. 'I am with you in Tripoli - together until the ends of the earth,' Gaddafi shouted.

Journalists in the area said that rebels had reached the suburb of Janzour by nightfall on Sunday. There they were greeted by civilians lining the streets and waving flags in support. As town after town fell and Gaddafi forces melted away, the mood turned euphoric. Some shouted: 'We are getting to Tripoli tonight.' Others were shooting in the air, honking horns and yelling 'Allahu Akbar.' Earlier the same rebels captured a major military base near the city and seized large stores of weapons. Troops advancing from outside the city took the base of Khamis Brigade, 16 miles to the west. It defends Colonel Muammar Gaddafi's stronghold and is a key gain for his opponents.

Another nasty socialist regime is about to be consigned to the dustbin of history it appears tonight. This however doesn't excuse our involvement in this war - Libya is not the concern of the United Kingdom as it would not matter to our national interests if Libya split into two dozen states tommorow. I am happy though for the people and I do wish them well, all regimes collapse in the end as good always triumphs over evil.

Many of you though will surely be thinking, 'surely this proves that western involvement can have a good influence and that we should intervene' - I pledge you to think this again, while celebrations are rife at the collapse of the regime we only have to look back at the Afghan-Soviet war in which we armed the rebel fighters there to see what eventually unfolded.

Sky News is reporting that the rebels are only 4.5 miles away from the city centre and i'm sure Saif (Gaddafis son) has just been captured if my memory serves me right. Its also interesting to remember that Gaddafi is (i'm sure of this, can say otherwise if i'm wrong) that he's the longest serving head of state in the world who is not a monarch being incharge since the 1960s when he had a coup against the King of Libya (of which its likely the Royal Family is going to be reinstated).

Thoughts?

Whilst this is good news and I'm beginning to think intervention was the wrong thing in recent weeks, I'm very dubious of the "new" regimes in Tunisia and Egypt. These so-called "elections" which the people fought for are taking a very long time to materialise, over 6 months later they're not even close to them and the Army doesn't seem any less heavy handed or better than the previous regimes. I've no reason to see why the oh-so-amazing "new government" in Libya will be any better than the old one.

Telegraph has a great live blog on the unfolding events, reporting that Rebels are now within 2 miles of the city centre of Tripoli and that Gaddafis eldest son (not Saif) has now surrendered to Rebel forces + Presidential Guard have surrendered.

Looking very positive here, the rebels taking most of Tripoli and the Presidential Guard have surrendered. Can see it unfolding here (thanks to Dan for the link); http://english.aljazeera.net/watch_now/

I'm going to predict that Gaddafi will be wielding no control by the morning. Hopefully he'll be dead, arrested or exiled.

I have been watching Al Jazeera , CNN or BBC on the current crisis in Libya. What I have found out is that the anti-Gaddafi are already tearing down all of Gaddafi compounds , I heard 1 more has been destroyed and all journalists are trapped , with low ration and risk of starvation in a hotel at Tripoli , close to one of Gaddafi compound. Gaddafi's troop has been patrolling the hotel , to ensure no journalists escape due to the chaos caused by the rebels. Gaddafi also stated that he will fight till his last breath , not to surrender on defeat. The only thing I'm aware of is that Libya after the revolution will suffer consequences caused by the crisis there. By the way , his regime is close to defeat , all I can think of is to wish him all the best in the fight , he's been into hiding now and I heard he has atleast 100 entourages with him and bodyguards! Some are even women! All I can say is his part in the revolution is almost up. The more he goes into hiding , the more people die or get injured. Atleast 3 journalists have been killed while trying to find out the REAL truth. I also can't believe China is on pro-Gaddafi side!
