What a high quality operating system they are building there. They must of put a lot of thought into the user interface. They are truly innovative in design.

What the hell is that LOL

I don't like it :'( It's like taking something shiney and new and modern and going back to basics and like I worry it will go with the rest of it?

In regards to the video, that definitely wont be in the final version. Microsoft don't throw millions of dollars at UI development for nothing.

Also, it looks to be some sort of programming glitch throwing the tile window manager features into Aero. Possibly an integration test.

Well done for reading a crap article on Engadget who report such news about Windows 8 after everyone else has! I recommend you read: http://www.winrumors.com/microsoft-teases-its-metro-style-windows-8-start-menu/ and obviously this is not a final version. I can also see that black start menu being used for touch devices, obviously the bar wouldn't be aero as it doesn't match but Microsoft have not said "This is the final version" when it isn;t, they are still working on it and you should understand that.

You lot are fools. This is a very early (Alpha? Possibly not even that) build where MS are trying new things etc, I doubt it'll look anything like that in the final build.

Isn't it a bit early to judge? Also, the way it's written "Windows 8 Start Menu caught on camera, shows off high-contrast design" suggests that this isn't the default setting, but the high contrast design for people with sight problems, something Windows has had since Windows 95 (or there abouts).

Besides, the argument "that looks ugly, I won't use it" is void - Windows is highly customisable ;) You go to your ugly, grey Mac designs where the designers of such an OS have clearly sucked the happy and colours out of their UI :P

/typical OS rant

I'm sure that won't be it, considering they invest millions and hire specialists to come up with the design. A academically-challenged minor could of come up with that, "erm...a grey box!"

I'm fed up with your crap. They are testing different UI's and may have a number of them in Windows 8, the guy wasn't even showing off that UI in the video and was just there when he was talking about Windows Explorer. Just because theres images and videos of that on the internet doesn't mean it will look like that when it ships next year. At BUILD later on this month, I'm sure we will get a lot more information about Windows 8.

They will change it, it doesn't match the aero bar. Microsoft aren't stupid, regardless on what you may think of them. It's obviously there while they do some testing and crap or whatever else they do when building an operating system.

You must of missed past conversations where I said I'd be buying the first good battery life Windows 8 tablet I could get my hands on - still doesn't change that this release's start menu is ugly, I never said anything about it staying the same through to final release?

The Tiger to Leopard UI change was a drastic one and I love still how since I bought a Mac whenever I say anything negative towards Windows people jump on the bandwagon and insult OS X to me. I have a Windows laptop, am getting a Windows 8 Tablet, I also own two iMacs and it's all great and I love them.

Also I'm going to take this opportunity to directly call Tom and Matt Garner hypocrites because it's very evident that they sure can dish it out but can not take it :)

No I do prefer OS X but I like Windows too. It's interesting that you and others don't mind when Matt for instance posts that thread poking fun at Apple, yet when I post a genuine thing I dislike about Windows (and it was genuine enough to be posted on various tech news blogs so it's a genuine topic) I seem to get the negative end of the stick.

How funny.

Because like Matt and others, I "support" Windows. I generally don't use Apple products (although I can see the benefits and good things about some of them).

Can we look at this like football teams. Manchester United and Chelsea.

If there are five Manchester United fans and one Chelsea fan, it is quite obvious the Chelsea fan will get ripped, and everyone will poke fun at him and saywhy Manchester United is better. Yet if the Chelsea fan tries to pick fun at MU and take the micky out of something they will get the negative end of the stick. It doesn't take a ******* genius to work out that if the majority of people "support" one team over another, the majority will always appear to "target" the minorities team since they would be in the majority seat. Just like if the majority of people in a conversation prefer Windows to OSX, it is obvious whoever supports the 'minority' OS will get the negative end of the stick.

"How Funny."

I wish yours accepted the very notion that perhaps everything out of your home companies doors is not shimmering in golden beauty. I'm aware and hoping they change the UI to look more attractive prior to other releases but I'm not talking about those releases. I am talking about the release of Windows the screenshot posted was taken from, and to repeat my initial point it looks like pure crap.

"I am talking about the release of Windows the screenshot posted was taken from, and to repeat my initial point it looks like pure crap."

and that release is a Build XXXX which isn't the final version or even Beta nor is the UI final.

Lmao. Sorry but I prefer Windows over Mac but this argument is stupid.

If someone showed you a Beta of a website said its going to be ages till it is finished and they are just trying a few different things, and you didn't like something you'd say. You wouldn't think oh its a beta, it's going to change so I'm not going to give my opinion.

People need to just calm down. Windows has its features, Mac has its features they both have differences, they both have similarities, and I really wish people could simply accept that. I don't mind people criticising either, but when ever someone posts something about either, instead of debating what you think about the news, it turns out into a war, as if people have to drag the other in. And the problem is if a mac fan say's something they don't like about Windows, e.g. don't like the new look, they get shot down, as if they are only saying it because they are a mac fan, and vice versa.

My loves, please, stop fighting and just hug already :P Mac OS X Snow Leopard and Lion were just Service Packs you pay for, Apple have patents they shouldn't be allowed to create and Jobs' legacy is leaving this world knowing he has created more court cases than is physically possible.

<insert something imperfect about Microsoft here>

EDIT: Is it actually current release, or just a sampler video of an OS that seems to be in the early stages of development? It probably won't turn up on the final product - caring about something that is months/years ahead of us is unwise :P

I'm not actually sure, but BUILD is next week where they will be showing the next version of Windows. It might be called "Windows 8" it might not, there's stories going round that 8 is just still a codename for the time being. Either way, the version they show at BUILD will also have some missing features that will get added at a later stage.

There comes a point where you are intentionally trying to slander windows to annoy, or you're just being plain dumb. It's not difficult to realise that:

a) It's not final
b) It's probably a UI test/bug
c) It's probably a programmer screwing around with stuff which incidentally got screen captured because some eejit realised that every tech blog and their mothers and yourself would immediately assume "Oh that's final and I guess this is what windows is like from now on since everything non-apple must be terrible.".
d) You're a troll. Stop trolling.
