RIM's Q2 earnings report: $329 million in net income, not enough to fend off critics The first quarterly earnings report post-Wake Up Call have just been published for Canada's own Research in Motion, and while the cash is still flowing, investors and analysts alike aren't feeling too rosy about the future. Despite Q2 revenue of $4.2 billion and a GAAP net income of $329 million, RIM's stock plummeted nine percent following the news. Why? That reality was at the lowest end of estimates, and as we've seen, it takes a blowout quarter to please the folks on Wall Street. Nevertheless, the company's touting a subscriber base that ballooned 40 percent year-over-year (surpassing 70m total), and while it's quick to trumpet the rollout of seven new smartphones, not a one of them managed to astound the QNX-desiring critics. The report also notes that 10.6 million handsets were moved in the quarter, around $780 million was invested as "part of a consortium of companies that successfully bid to acquire intellectual property assets from Nortel," and it's forecasting that BlackBerry smartphone shipments in Q3 will grow between 27 percent and 37 percent compared to Q2. Sadly, the company only "shipped" 200,000 PlayBook tablets, with the prevailing thought being that it actually sold far fewer. Moreover, nary a forecast was given for future PlayBook sales.

Can't wait for it to die off completely :)

I spoke with Blackberry before the release of the playbook.
I asked their expectations for their sales of the playbook. Their response?

"We expect it to do okay. Possibly a few hundred K?"
"won't you make a giant loss"
"yeah, we expect that."
"WHAT?"
"The idea of this playbook is to get it out there. to have a viable product to match our competitor's. With this device we intended it for a niche market, for people to feel good about having. This is our first, we don't expect it to make much if anything at all"

So, in regards to the playbook, I think it's unfair for them to be mocked for that. I'm not biased bb user - I use android!

My brother worked at Staples (a depo in Canada who's into electronics pretty steep) and for all few months he was there when the PlayBook was out he sold a grand total of two :P

I think we've sold about 30-50. we're not even large. and that's out of an estate of 640+.
It got me a free playbook anyways. I gave my sister my playbook and torch :D.

RIM as a company are going to end up like nokia. Plowing millions upon millions into "innovation" (Nokia was... 4Bl if i remember? higher than anyone else. even a few combined!) not use any of it and their loyal fans will diminish.

at the moment they have a good strong hold in the UK of the 16-24. Now a lot of users hate their blackberry's because they're too dumb to think "hmm maybe I should backup+update this" so all they do is complain they're awful because they're bound to have a software fault and lose everything unless they did back up/bb protect it!

RIM are always one of the last in the market to move on. Dear god, they won't have a dual core until summer next year no doubt?!

Pathetic attitude it really is, I don't mean to get all serious when you're perhaps playing around but there's not liking Blackberry's and then there's wishing for a company to go bankrupt, think of the masses who would lose their jobs. It really is childish behavior. You make it sound like RIM's manufacturing line involves African Slaves and users of Blackberry's die due to poisonous chemicals.

Your loss somewhat too anyway, RIM is a very sizable Canadian firm and would be a loss to the economy. No doubt some of the designers etc would simply leave the country for Sillicon Valley or Asia should the company go. Skills disappearing in an economy is never a good thing.

but i'm one of those people who really liked blackberry/rim til i got one, i can see why they're losing money. they're terrible handsets. though i do like the playbook.

No not at all - I'm wishing for the Black Berry to die off or for RIM to start making decisions to make their handsets more feature full and competitive on the current and future market of portable handsets and devices.

I'm not going to sugar coat what I think here. If you have a Blackberry and enjoy it then that's great for you, continue using it and be happy. But personally I feel, and I know a lot of other people feel this way, that the devices RIM are pushing out are absolutely not upto par with other similar consumer devices by other companies. I really don't think what they have is very good at all and even the best spec'd BlackBerry running the newest version of the OS is being schooled by mid-level Android handsets in terms of features and monthly prices for plans (the latter in Canada atleast).

Since the original iPhone was introduced it was very obvious to me that there was no future for Palm or RIM in this industry the way they were doing things. I think RIM is very much another Palm whom attempted to cling onto old standards of the industry and failed to step up their game when Google and Apple signed on. Obviously it wouldn't be desired to see folks lose their jobs however I strongly believe that could be the reality for RIM at some point. To add onto this it would be absolutely and completely RIM's own fault. It was blindly obvious HP buying Palm wouldn't work out in the end, and it was blindly obvious that RIM was going to suffer as they are now if when they're producing a single core low resolution phone running a less than stellar OS with a ceiling of 40k app availability the next door neighbour's already been cooking up dual cored smart phones with hundreds of thousands of applications readily available to the user.

They've been playing catchup for years now and what do they have to offer me in terms of consumer products? A phone in a nice form factor that doesn't do half the things my Android handsets or iPhone can do, and a tablet which can do about one in a half things for the price of my iPad. So again if you are happy with your BlackBerry then be you and be happy but for me I am a human who cannot understand why people would make decisions to spend sometimes hundreds of dollars to buy a phone that's not as good as another phone readily available to them at a similar or sometimes even cheaper price. Are you buying it because of just the form factor? Because you like that it's pink? I don't know and I'll never know but it still baffles me I have to admit :P

To add onto the above the fact that Windows 8 is going to steal the market share of tablets in 2012 and that Ultrabook sales are going to hurt tablet sales is not good news for RIM again. That also means Android and iOS are going to be progressively improving to compete and if RIM just keeps playing catchup like they are it really doesn't look good for their existence in the not too distant future. I'm not clapping about signing a death warrant here but it is what it is. If RIM are to turn the tables now's the time to do it and for their sake I cross my fingers that they're more successful than Rubinstein and his friends at Palm (and on that note I'm still awaiting shipping confirmation of my TouchPad).

If you're a die hard Black Berry fan who hates my iPhone by all means hate iOS and the iPhone there's many things I hate about my iPhone myself and there's many things I hated about my Android Nexus One too. I didn't like aspects of my Windows Mobile phones, Palm Pilots, Windows CE devices years ago too but in this industry anything (http://www.pcworld.com/article/238542/99_hp_touchpad_selling_out_during_fire_sale.html) can (http://gizmodo.com/5520164/this-is-apples-next-iphone) happen (http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/2011/feb11/02-11partnership.mspx) and anything can change overnight so I guess with regards to RIM we'll see where they are in a year or two.

I don't see the big deal, yes I don't like BlackBerry, but I do know a few people who have them for the simple fact it has a hardware keyboard and they're extremely stable. I really miss the hardware keyboard on my Desire >_>

You could upgrade to a "SUPER"phone (do they call dual core phones super phones over there?) with Android and a hardware keyboard instead of an iPhone 5.

HTC sensation XE is out as of the 1st of October, 1.5gHz dual core, better 1730mHz battery life. beats audio.

I love how htc flung out two 'flagships' in the space of three months. gawd they kept the desire as flagship for over 13 months!

David, Blackberries in the United Kingdom sell more than the iPhone do. You just have to deal with the fact people like the phones and people do indeed buy them, no one is forcing you to use them at all. Anyway, if Blackberry get into "major" problems in terms of money I'm pretty sure someone will buy them out.

Really don't understand why some people have company loyalty towards companies they don't even have any connection to. Anyway idgi achieving estimates at all (albeit low-end ones) isn't exactly a terrible thing, especially on experimental products

I have no beef with RIM/Blackberry, they are one of the more socially responsible organisations out there, unlike Google, Apple and Microsoft. They're just slow to act on the changing business environment, and this is there only down fall. I don't see the point in getting angry and wishing for bankruptcy on a company that isn't morally evil or does no harm to anyone :P
