View Full Version : Do you know what you want to do with your life?

Being really old I guess the future has finally become a problem. I've known it for a while now, but I really don't know what I want from life nor do I know what I want to do with my life, which probably isn't the best thing someone who has just started university can say. Hopefully it will give me some direction, but I seem to be here, there and everywhere. Struggling to make big decisions is one of my biggest failings and I can't seem to find a solid path. Obviously I have dreams, but despite that I still feel very uncertain regarding the future. It's never really bothered me before, since I am a very go with the flow kind of person, but I can't help but feel I should probably be worried about this otherwise it's all going to be over before I realise it.

This isn't a thread about me though. I don't want any help. I just want to know if anyone feels the same way? Are you uncertain? Do you have a clear path in your life? Do you have a goal? Do you know what you want to do in the future? When people ask you "where do you see yourself in five or ten years?" can you actually answer that question? Can you even imagine yourself in the future? I know I can't.

I suppose I'm one of a minority... I've wanted to be a teacher since I was in primary school, although subject/year has changed over time! But yeah, 3 years uni (starting tomorroww aa) then a PGCE, move to USA/AUS and teach! woo!

Glad i'm not the only one feeling like this. I'm doing history atm and going into my final year so thoughts like this are stressing me out because I feel like i've ran out of time and I need to make decisions soon. I used to be certain I wanted to primary school teaching but places are so tight here and theres a real lack of jobs in northern ireland. I might apply for places in england but then i'm clueless about where to go etc. I'm just not sure about what I wanna do so think I might head to su for some career advice as soon as I start back. :(

feel the same, just dropped out of a course at uni because i hated it and kinda stuck in limbo at the moment.

my ultimate goal is to have my own theatre company specialising in in-yer-face theatre + theatre in education. i want to deconstruct the current ideology of theatre and rebuild it in the streets of the united kingdom. that's the dreaaaaam.

I'm not entirely sure yet, but I'm going to do CS at Uni just because I'm interested in it, I'll worry about what I really wanna do afterwards.

Well I know which direction I would like to go in which is a career in the law but we all know things won't be easy so I will have to remain flexible. Apart from that I prefer just to go with the flow and not worry about tomorrow it will come soon enough. :)

I want people who are being bullied to believe in themselves, even if everything at the minute looks like a cruel and dark place and if I can inspire someone to never give up, I'd be the happiest person in the world. If I can touch and help people through my poetry, then that makes going through the pain, darkness and the feeling of being alone that being bullied brings worth it. If I can also make someone feel like life was worth living, that would be a bonus. Thats my mission in life.

just started uni, one of my lecturers told us we shouldn't decide so soon what we wanna do with our lives
we need to spend the next 4 years figuring out which areas we like and what we're good at

I have problems with it too. I constantly change my mind.. :P and I couldn't make a decision. Well, atm I thought of getting good results in my exam. Get a good university and a high-paid job. Then, I'll start a business if I have enough money. That's all atm. But God knows if I'll ever change the plan. haha

Being a huge computer nerd i've always known that i wanted to go into something to do with IT since i was in in like primary school. Only recently though (a year ago i guess) i realised i had a passion (and rather talented if i say so myself) at programming/software development. I seem to pick up the languages really quickly and can use them efficiently., not to mention i find it really fun.

So i'm definitely going into something like that, and recently I got told about this thing from channel 4 where they pay for your university as long as you do software development/computer science, which is exactly what I wanna do, and you just have to work for them afterwards. So hopefully i'll get into that, and if not, i just recieved my reference from my Accenture internship so I might even end up working there in the future. Only problem i can see is that a lot of businesses are starting to outsource their programming to cheaper countries like India n all that, so i might just have to go into something else IT related.

i have sooo much i want to do :(
gonna do anthropology n psychology next year but i know how hard it is to get a job with specifically studying cultures and it'll probably cost a lot of money. idk i'm gonna get a job after it and try to get any experience or get in to voluntary work. i would love to be paid to stay in someone's house and get shown their life ech sfhah4h & i also want to travel A LOT. & do protests over vaccinations/handling of food etc. dont want an average comfortable life. AH I CAN DREAM.

I too haven't got a solid path. It just seems like there's nothing out there for me - I don't like anything. Nothing appeals to me at all. I wanted to become a dentist and then move to Russia because well.. you need dentists everywhere. But now I think I am realising that that won't happen and it's just a dream. So now I am thinking about becoming an English teacher, but that will mean I won't be able to move to Russia because teachers get paid hardly anything there... so I am stuck on what to do :S

I really wanted to be a teacher but then I've just began to doubt myself and lots of others did too. I'm glad I'm still young though, I've got quite a long time to decide what I really want to do. :)

I still feel uncertain about the future and I'm doing a postgraduate degree so I've already done my undergraduate degree a few years ago. I think people often have more than one career now, so I dont think things are set in stone even if you decide to go down one particular route.

I think uni will help to feel more sure of who you are as a person, even if you still feel unsure about your career choices. I guess the best any of us can do is try to find something we enjoy doing and keep doing it until we don't enjoy it anymore.

I thought I knew, I was going to go straight down the hard, competitive Clinical Psychology route following my undergraduate degree which involves a lot of experience-making and then further study, however I went to a careers seminar today on doing a phD and this really interested me too and seemed like it'd be a good stop gap and options to go elsewhere in life if something didn't work out. So yeah, it's a pain.

Varies. At the moment my degree and specialities seem to be hinting towards a life time of working with businesses making sure they are socially responsible, either with a business or in the legal sector, or working in the legal sector doing virtually anything or working within a business doing either marketing, micro-managing, legal aiding etc. I was going to work for Britvic 3 years ago but declined, and I wish I took the job now but events during that time stopped me. Then again, I'm sort of glad I declined given the nature of said events :/

aaaaw Man I don't have a massive itinerary containing all the stuff I ought to do in the next 5, 10 years but the root of all my ambitions is something about constant learning, learning a little of everything and everything about certain things, whatever that means

UNI, maybe 2, 3 courses, someone to love, etc

I'm glad I'm not the only one lost in life at the moment, still trying to figure out what I want to do in life, I often think of an idea I want to do and then a few weeks later I think nah its not really what I want to do, just spur of the moment

As a medical student, obviously being a doctor is what I want to do with my life. Ideally I'd like to work as an Intensivist; however, I don't know what path I'll take to get their.

I have an idea but whether or not I'll achieve that, I'm unsure. I'd love to get into writing and just be able to work from home, I don't want to have to get up and go to a job I don't enjoy. I'd also want to be living in a place I'm happy with. It's just working towards it all that's the hard part.

Well, I have an idea yes but I'm the sort of person who takes each day as it comes but I do still try to work towards my goals but I do have back up plans if I don't achieve what I want :).

It would be nice to help people through volunteer work. And me to work on my comics and stories but I need a job. If I had a lot of money that could last me a lifetime I would be able to give most of my time to volenteering.
