The Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union has begun discussions on a four-year pay deal for Tube workers which will see salaries rise by 5%.London Underground (LU) has offered a 5% pay rise in the first year, followed by rises in line with inflation plus 0.5% for the next three years.
The RMT's general secretary Bob Crow said its members might not find a better offer in the public sector.
LU said it hoped the deal would lead to a stable service during the Olympics.
The union said the wage deal could see staff salaries go up by about to 20% by 2015.
The salary hike will push the salaries of many workers, including technical staff and Tube drivers over £50,000, the RMT said.
The current average salary of a driver is £46,000 a year.

That's pretty good pay, but I guess the job is boring and not easy to get into given the limited number of trains available (London is big, but not that big) :P I can't help but think this is greed though.

Well what else could it be? Many people deserve more then they do in my books yet do not get it.

The public sector continues to swallow up cash while the private sector which creates the wealth has to foot the bills, forcing many out of business. When will this madness end? if the train companies weren't so subsidised (as they are) then maybe we'd have a competitive rail market where workers knew that in order to get a better deal, hard graft has to go into it as opposed to Union meddling.

If we don't cut the public sector back dramatically (as we are not) then it will continue to grow, and when we eventually do have to cut it back it will be a thousand times worse than if we did it now. Take a look at Greece for a key example.

How challenging can it be to drive a tube?

I mean for £50,000 I'd train to do it.

It's just pure greed. Anyone on pay that high cannot be 'cutting back', surely?

And as Dan said and to which I am in support of, if the tube's weren't subsidised by the government and were made competitive, this wouldn't be happening.

You can't exactly get lost whilst driving a train....

Bus drivers imo probably have a more difficult job, and get like half the salary.

But whatever... train drivers are train drivers i guess

Even in London where the cost of living is significantly higher than in the rest of UK, £46'000 is still way above average

They have to get decent pay because it's a job no one wants to do. (Speaking before the pay rise hahah :P)

I think anyone would be happy to work for that money - no one wants to be a handy man - but they don't get 50k a year lol
