Six people have been shot dead at a hair salon in the Los Angeles area, local media are reporting.

The shooting took place in the city of Seal Beach, Orange County, and a suspect is in custody, the reports say.

Three other people were shot and are in a critical condition, officials are quoted as saying. TV pictures showed police sealing off a retail area.

Story is still breaking so not much information at the time. Things like this becoming all too common!!! Sickening

How sad is all you can say about the tragic event, things like this are just so unpredictable you never think it'll be you.

But as for the event concerning guns, no doubt it'll be used be the anti-gun/unconsitutional lobby to attempt to ban guns in the name of our safety, similar to Britain where the only people who have the guns now are the criminals!

I'm glad that members of the public cannot carry a firearm in this country. This isn't because I'm a sadist who derives pleasure from oppressing people, it's because I value my safety. Yes, some criminals in this country have guns, but not to the same extent as in America. If you think having your own gun will save you from a bullet in motion then you are a fool, allowing the public to carry guns would make it much, much easier for criminals and people with intent but no record to carry a gun. The result would be the same as in America, shootings and rife gun crime - not to mention what would happen with our appalling gang culture.

In regards to the United States, there's no debate - it is in the consitution.

And we don't have rife gun and knife crime in certain areas of this country too? the issue of 'safety' is ridiculous, if its a reason to ban guns then why not ban knives or put heavy restrictions upon them or even go as far as banning cars, which i'd put good money on suggesting that more people die from car-related accidents every year than they do with guns. If criminals are the increase in gun shootings that would come with legalisation I care very little as those who are innocent will at least be defended, unlike now.

It is also interesting to note, apparently the areas in the U.S. with most gun regulation are those with more gun crime.

I know this is old but I haven't been on the forum much at all recently.

We don't have rife gun crime in this country, we do have a knife crime endemic though. You say that you believe there are more car related deaths than gun related deaths - maybe in the UK but I would very much doubt that is the case in the US. Comparing the two is ridiculous anyway, cars are essential for the public in a modern world but civilian firearms serve one purpose: 'protection' from other civilians carrying firearms.

This idea that carrying a gun will somehow protect you from gun crime is equally as ridiculous. If someone shoots you, gun or no gun, you are (assuming that their aim was true) going to be maimed by the projectile fired. Carrying your own gun would probably make little difference, or you may be able to shoot back in revenge.

You could argue that carying a gun would dissuade attackers - maybe so if they didn't also have a gun (which they most assuredly will)!
