Do you like your accent? What's your favourite accent?

I obviously have a slight Yorkshire accent which could be considered quite a nice thing to have due to polls suggesting that it's one of the friendliest. Apparently it's considered one of the most intelligent too, perhaps due to the stereotypical "Yorkshire policeman" image. I'm not convinced and I don't really like it all that much.. :(

My favourite accent is probably Received Pronunciation, better known as BBC English (the Queen, David Cameron and Stephen Fry, to name a few RP speakers)! It sounds so nice when you hear it on the radio or television and it carries a sense of authority.

How about you? :)

in the uk, the corners.
ie, scotland (apart from the silly ones like fife, aberdeen, dumfries... they sort of silly area's), welsh and especially NI.

Most english accents cut through me. especially the ghetto ones. like LANDAN. they're terrible. especially with the funny dialect that comes up from their infantile chat. like blud. bredrin. brap.

i also like south african and swedish.

Well, I wouldn't say I've got an accent.

I'm from Dublin in Ireland, wouldn't say I've much of an accent. Don't really have a favorite accent tbh! :P

Merge a brummie accent with a kiwi accent and you get mine. it's really weird and I get mixed opinions, i will never get over the amount of crap I get for saying h though...It's what I get for moving to NZ i guess XD

I do say I love Irish accents and those posh London accents like Jude Laws mmmmmmmmm :P

I live in Wiltshire... where everyone is meant to talk like a farmer? And the majority of my friends really fit that stereotype :L

I don't though, The only thing I sound like is Slightly "Posh"... just because I pronounce words properly... -_-. I'd call that more educated than posh.

My favourite accent would probably be a Spanish accent, I love the language and the accent :3 and I'm also like.. 1/16th Spanish xL

I'm scottish and I would say I have quite a strong scottish accent, especially when I talk in slang. I agree with you on the received pronunciation accent.

My accent's really broad and I don't use slang often so it's a very tame glasweigan one. I've been asked about, forty times while out if i'm polish because my accent doesn't seem right.

Not everyone here talks like that, I find it rare to find people today, who use such terrible language, maybe it is because I'm older now and it mainly stays in school? I'm a Londoner, and I say LONDON,not 'Landan', although my friends from up North believe I do. London, obviously, is my favourite dialect, especially when spoken in a correct manner, like myself how I speak. The dialects that really get on my nerves though are the normal ones, Liverpudlian, Welsh, Brumey and Scottish. Oh, not forgetting the Essex dialects.

the blond hair blue eyes does it for me, I think.

And erh, I've met many a londoner like that, especially through my work. It grates on me. What's even worse is the weird accents that come out from mass immigration, like faux afrikan/jamaican-south englander thing some people use.

@K
20-10-2011, 06:03 PM
You've obviously met the wrong kind then, I'm from West London and living (until tomorrow) in South London, and the only people I have heard speak like you stated previously are black school kids (not being racist).

Literally never heard anyone say "Landan" unless they're taking the piss lol but I think I know what the general accent you're on about is Allan, and yeah it does grate a bit. Any time it sounds like speaking is a full on effort is just wrong

Haha, we did a poll in our English Language class Mathew and R.P was ranked the lowest with our own accent voted the highest.

To be honest though I voted west country (Somerset, Glouster etc, I think that's the name anyway). As my Auntie and Uncle are from there and I always think they are Welsh but I just like the way they speak. Also my English Language teacher (one of them) is from Bristol way on originally and he often puts on accents from the West Country and it just sounds nice to me!

My accent is northern one (North West) But I don't think i really have an accent because i'm from Blackpool and not places like Manchester and Liverpool which have strong well recognized accents! But I do sound a bit southern sometimes because of my family, they are all southerners and then i picked up the northern accent because of living up north xD But yeah I don't really think I have an accent just certain words sound a bit different xD My favorite accent is either Mancunian or American/Canadian :)

I was born in Bedfordshire, which is in East Anglia and rather near London, but grew up in the Midlands in Northamptonshire. I think I probably have more of a normal London-ish accent though. I speak very British English and don't like using slang. I pronounce water correctly and stuff.

I don't know what to make of my accent. Mostly because I don't notice it. I've lived in the same place for too long and all the people I know have similar accents and most of the television I watch is based down here, so I just can't distinguish it. I guess in that respect I wish it was more apparent, though I bet if I ventured up North or something I'd start noticing it every day. My Northern friend said my accent was strange. Although I have had Americans say they love it. I'll have to get back to you on whether I like it or not.

I don't know what my favourite accent is.

To everyone saying they don't have an accent, of course you do, an American will turn around and say 'I sound normal, I don't think I have an accent', but, of course they do to US, a northerner will have an accent/dialect, whatever you want to call it, and so do I and the rest of the southerners. Just because you grow up in a certain place, have lived there all your life, doesn't mean you do not sound different to people from other places, obviously to you, that is the norm, but for me and others, you do not sound 'normal'. I speak with a London dialect, just like those of you from Scotland, Blackpool, Birmingham and everyone else speak with a dialect originating from where you are from.

I have a Scottish accent and I don't mind it, really. I'm from Edinburgh but I've lived now in Fife for 7 years and despite them being right next to each other, there is a little bit of a difference in the accent. Mines is a bit more broad now that it used to be.

I'm from Essex, and live in Durham - most of the essex is gone, and people in Durham actually attempt to speak properly, unlike Newcastle and Sunderland - so I like my accent, it's rather civilised.

Accent is a tone of voice, a way of speaking one person is not used to, yeah everybody has an accent, but nobody thinks of themselves having accents.
So in my little world, i don't have an accent. Everyone else does.
And my favorite one would have to be african americans, jewish, and australian. and a ladies british accent, they such a turn-on

I'm from Bolton so obviously I'm quite Northern naturally, although to be honest, I find my accent changes quite a bit depending where I am and who I'm with (not intentionally). I guess I don't really like my accent, maybe that's why it changes? Or maybe I'm just open to change and that shows through picking up things from other people's accents?

Accents I like? I'm not too sure really... As long as I can understand you okay I don't have a problem! :p
