Breaking news so not much information

Commanders for Libya's transitional authorities say they have captured former Libyan leader Col Muammar Gaddafi.

The news came after transitional forces claimed control of Sirte, Col Gaddafi's birthplace. There was no independent confirmation of his capture.

I was just watching this on Sky News, fantastic news! What do you think will happen next? Will he be put on trial and jailed or death sentence?

---------- Post added 20-10-2011 at 12:43 PM ----------

I've just heard that he has been killed? Not sure if it's a rumour or not.

I'm watching sky news now, and they are saying that there are reports that he has been killed and that his body has arrived?

I think it'll take a few hours to find out what's actually happened.

Apparently he has died from his wounds from his capture, sounds like he was just killed then.

This just appeared on BBC News, it doesn't say that he's dead though - so Idk if that's a rumour or not.

If he isn't dead, then he probably will be killed...if he's on trial in Libya he's bound to be given the death sentence.

Thank God he's been captured though ^_^

First Bin Laden, now Gadaffi ... Seems to be going pretty well.

I'll update the first post as more news comes in. All that has been confirmed thus far is that he has been captured :)

I'm surprised he remained in the area even though it was obvious that the rebel forces would eventually seize control

Numerous sources have confirmed that he's dead, just not western news, but his corpse has reportedly arrived in some city. I'd say he's pretty much dead.

Interesting news, but it doesn't change the fact the Western World put Gaddafi in his position in the first place. If he is still alive and captured, and given the death sentence I hope Bush and Blair get the same, they're guilty as sin as much as Gaddafi, if not more guilty :P

A picture of him has just been shown on skynews, it looks like he has most likely died from his wounds.

I hope he is not dead, if they want democracy then intentionally killing their old leader certainly isn't a good sign of things to come!
Of course it could have just been a fierce battle.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/africaandindianocean/libya/8838611/Libya-Gaddafi-dies-from-wounds-suffered-in-Sirte-capture.html

National Transitional Council official Abdel Majid Mlegta said that Gaddafi was captured and wounded in both legs at dawn on Thursday as he tried to flee in a convoy which Nato warplanes attacked.

Gaddafi was shot in both legs and "also hit in his head", the official said. "There was a lot of firing against his group and he died."

There was no independent confirmation of his remarks.

Apparently where he was. The Prime Minister has arrived at a big hotel to speak to the press. Presumably wouldn't bother if it wasn't true. Pretty sure it's going to be confirmed he's dead/captured in next few minutes. Oh, the picture is what the associated press have been told he was found, lol.

BBC said some 20 odd year old found him in a hole in the center of the city, so probably true :p

They're saying it's district two so I imagine it'd be the outskirts.

I think most people knew he was dead ages ago. You don't need to wait for western news to catch up. Al Jazeera reported this about two hours ago. There's another picture of his corpse on their website.

Just go on Al Jazeera's website.
BBC News is gory enough, they show a small image of a dead Gaddafi in the main article.

Quite shocking he's dead. Hopefully it was accidental, because building a country for the hopes of democracy by killing without fair trial doesn't make good the foundations of a good country in the future. Let's just hope the Libyan's pick someone, and the west are kept out of it.

corpse: a dead body, usually of a human being.

I'm going to hazard a guess and say he's dead.

Always nice to see that after all that trouble and torture, they go right ahead and assassinate him. They obviously didn't think it through.

Gadhafi took 42 years to bring this country from nowhere to the top of the human development index on the continent. It took NATO 6 months and 20 000 bombing sorties to bring this country back to it's original position.

Another socialist despot and his regime (supported by the west) consigned to the dustbin of history.

As for his method of death I say this. Firstly, why is the Prime Minister David Cameron congratulating this news when apparently he does not believe in the death penalty? if death without a trial by jury, by a mob on the streets is good enough for Gaddafi - then why will Mr. Cameron utterly reject the notion of the death penalty being used in the United Kingdom when it has majority support, comes with trial by jury, the right of appeal and a humane method of execution. Secondly, while I support his execution I do not support the execution-by-mob style which Bin Laden and Gaddafi have been killed by. I actually find the pictures of his final moments rather sickening, and thats even with being aware of what this man and his regime have done over the past few decades. Animals do not act like this, savages do.

..but thats one less Christmas card that Mr. Blair will be recieving this year! no doubt Mr. Blair can now sleep soundly, knowing that Gaddafi is no longer around for a trial in which he could expose the dirt he has on Blair himself along with the British and American governments. How convenient.

What will arise next in a deeply tribal and divided country that was held together, like Iraq, by a hardline strongman?

This video is strangely prophetic, notice President Assad of the Syrian Republic laughing and now look who is laughing. Gaddafi was brutally frank about international relations, he made peace with the west during the turn of the century and then look what happened.

I do hope for the restoration of the Kingdom of Libya and the Libyan Royal Family, its been rumoured as a possibility - again, it goes to show that nations which have a consitutional monarchy or even an absolute monarchy are by far the most prosperous and stable... Jordan, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates..... it's the best thing Libya could do right now to ensure stability.

Damn! so that means no more SNL sketches about him on Weekend Updates! Sorry if that offended people.

On the other hand, good thing he won't be terrorizing people anymore
