I can't say namibia no matter how hard I try. I do have a problem with words on occasions e.g. cark park will come out as par cark which others find very amusing.

I remember not being able to pronounce 'dollar' I used to say 'doll-er' and hold it on for ages. Also 'tarmacking' I said 'tar-marking' and again held it on for a long time.

I'm fine with pronunciation, though on the odd occasion I have to slow down when the word "walruses" appears in a conversation. The 'wal' bit is the problem, makes the rest of the word sound odd.

I hope none of the people saying they can't pronounce certain words are from the south.

GommeInc

I only found out today that a pouffe (french) / pouf (english) is pronounced differently in the north. It's meant to be pronounced pooooooooof (not poof, just a bit longer sounding in the middle), while up north (or in Corrie ads) they pronounce it poofay. There's no hyphen, so the e doesn't sound like an a.

Well the north pronounce everything differently because they're noobs, but I'm from the south and while I don't think I've ever had to say pouffe, I would have pronounced it as poofay as well. There is actually supposed to be some sort of diacritic above the e isn't there?

FlyingJesus

Pouffe is pronounced poof (although as Ryan says, generally more extended for some reason) which can add instant amusement to otherwise boring trips to elderly relatives as they always seem to have a pouffe in the middle of the room

Neversoft
07-01-2012, 02:43 AM
Oh right, a pouffe is one of those things you rest your feet on. In that case I do pronounce it as poof. Why does it have to be spelt so ******edly. I wonder what the hell I was thinking of? Maybe souffle. :8

You can get instant amusement by typing "pouffe" into Google Translate with french as the highlighted language and listening to how it's pronounced :P

I have a heavy French accent so you can imagine that it is very funny to hear me pronounce words like 'beach', 'sheet' and 'slot'. I like riding the train from Paris to London and when I am there I keep my spoken words to a minimum because I have gotten laughed at in the past when I mess up my pronunciations. Some of my English friends think it is cute, though, so I guess it can be a blessing!

I don't really have a trouble pronouncing words because I read a lot so I get used to the word and gradually study the word in more detail, which in turn results in a better understanding of the way the word is pronounced. If I don't know how to pronounce a word I ask my English teacher or my dad, who also reads a lot.
