So, as could be expected the SNP is wanting independence from the UK. From what I'm gathering, it will be a while before any form of referendum as they want time to win people around. The referendum will either state a clear break from the union with a simple "yes or no" question, or where they will still be in the union but have more powers.

So that's a basic break down, and while I think Scotland should have the right to break off, I think it would not be the best idea for either of our countries and the referendum would need a very high turnout with a high majority aswell. I'd write more but I'm a tad tired, but I posted this really to see what others view on this.

I see myself as British and my nation as the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland - from that being a Unionist, obviously i'm totally opposed to Scotland or any other parts of the United Kingdom breaking away although I do accept they have a right to independence should they choose to exercise that. The question we must ask ourselves though, is who got us into this mess in the first place which has caused the gradual weakening of our Kingdom? it starts with the Labour Party who began making promises of devolution in the 1970s to Scotland/Wales in an attempt to keep power bases away from Westminster when they were out of office purely for political gain, and the 1997 term of the Labour Party when they introduced devolution which has left our nation hanging together by a thread.

The second problem behind this gradual breakup is the Conservative and, wait for it, Unionist Party which has made no attempts to reverse the disasterous policies of devolution nor will ever make any attempt being the useless political party it is hence why it ought to be destroyed as soon as possible. Therefore what must be sought is this, and this is the only solution from what I see it; a choice must be given to the people of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland asking whether they wish to become independent sovereign nations with their own parliaments or whether they wish to remain a part of the United Kingdom with one parliament at Westminster. The reasons why it has come to this are simple - while these nations have their own parliaments along with Westminster, they will continue to cause resentment between the English and the Scottish/Welsh and Northern Irish (see University fees for example, paid for by English subsidy) which will cause our nation to eventually fall apart anyway. I would like them to stay with us, but it is entirely their choice and the choice I have given above is the only real choice in the long term. As Enoch Powell said when asked by his wife what the election results meant in 1997 when hearing of the electoral victory of the Labour Party, he replied "they have voted to break up the Union" - how right he was.

The irony is however that this isn't even 'the biggie' issue concerning the independence of our nation/s as most of our laws are now made in Brussels by the European Union which threatens the very existence of our nation/s.

Alex Salmond said on Reporting Scotland earlier something along the lines of 'Westminster shouldn't be interfering in the democracy of Scotland' which I found quite amusing considering there's more demand for an EU referendum. I am totally against Scottish independence, despite being surrounded by people that think our oil would make us so wealthy and the Government would have an unlimited supply of money from it. I think the idea of 2 different parliaments in one country with different powers is just ridiculous, because as you say, it just causes tension between the countries when Scottish people have free education or have things that English or Welsh people don't. Salmond is saying it's scheduled for 2014 because I think the general consensus right now is that we should remain part of the UK and I think he's waiting for more 'cuts' or rifts in the UK Government to attract people towards independence. There should only be one parliament, it should be Westminster.
