(This is relating to Habbo, it is not just to do with SOPA/PIPA)

Just a quick question. I'm not 100% sure on what SOPA/PIPA are trying to do exactly - I think it's along the lines of 'removing sites which contain copyrighted material'? I know what they stand for haha but I still don't get it 100% - too confusing.

Anyway, if it is to do with 'copyrighted material', would this not surely eliminate Habbo retros forever? They'd have to close or be fined/closure by force surely?

If this is the case, maybe that's why Sulake haven't said anything about SOPA/PIPA.

Just wondering.

Highly doubt it

Good question. I guess if people were worried about the consequences of owning one then they may shut them down, but it would never eliminate them completely.

Well, sulake is based in finland. They can already pull down the retros under dmca, SOPA just makes it easier. But SOPA would only work for US based TLDs so if it used a .fr or .uk or .fi or .tv or .org domain it wouldn't work.

Oh right. Thanks for summing that up ^_^

Technically they can be closed down already, SOPA/PIPA or not. There are already laws in the US and UK which tackle things like this. It's using resources without permission, using copyrighted material without permission. But realistically, with SOPA/PIPA and current copyright laws, retros won't ever cease to exist, because they will continuously crop up. It just means there's another law doing the job of currently existing laws. So effectively you have two laws.

Certainly, however america's jurisdiction ends at american based servers and american TLDs so if you base a server in say Russia with a .ru tld then america can't do to much about completely shutting it down, only for american access.
