I'm planning on buying either a PS3 or an Xbox 360. My cousin did suggest I should get a PS3 because you can play for free and blueray blah blah. Although, most my friends have got Xbox's and said I should get that.

Erm, which one is better? Could you say why it's better as well please. :(

I'll be honest, they're practically the same. They both do the core functions which is to play games but theres a few functions on xbox which ps3 dont have and vice versa. I don't know a lot about ps3, but xbox has become more of a media device than a games console.

PS3 has basically always been advertised that it is a media device.

To be honest, bluray is only a real arguement if a) you plan on getting bluray/3D bluray movies and b) if a lot of games you want take lots of discs on xbox. When I initially got a PS3 it was because my friends had it which was ultimately because of free online. Now I prefer it because I prefer the games on there overall. The only other factor is if you want Kinect or Move, because obviously they're only on 360 and PS3 respectively. Ultimately, you should base it on your favourite game genres.

Final note, I wouldn't bother basing your decision on price if you plan to play online for 2 years or so.

Hmm, at the moment I think I'll buy a PS3. Kinda seems like a better option. :P Thanks to you both [@]@Infectious[/@] and [@]@dbgtz[/@]

I'd personally get the PS3 as there a signs it won't be getting replaced until 2014/2015 whereas most analysts say that the next Xbox will be out in 2013.

Well the reason I bought an Xbox 360 when it came out was due to me already having an Xbox with a Live Subscription. There fore the logical choice being to buy an Xbox. I now see it as a superior console. People often argue (and I hear this a lot) that the ps3 is the better console due to 1, Free online service. 2, Blu-ray 3, Better games. and in all 3 of those there are several counter arguments. e.g Xbox's is of better quality, Blu-rays only ofter more space, The games are down to personal choice etc etc. But I won't go into that too much.

I'd say go for the Xbox due to the fact, It's owned by the majority of your friends, which will cure boredom in the long run.

This whole post is true, but the bolded bit is most. You can get a new Xbox for cheaper than a new PS3 in some places, and yes the new Xbox MIGHT be out next year, but you've still got a whole year's worth of use out of it, probably far more considering I doubt every single 360 owner is going to get the next console straight on launch date.
In my eyes the Xbox is better simply because everything works properly. You pay for a service that is up 99% of the time, and even when there are problems with it you can still play the games and talk to your friends. If all of your friends have an Xbox, it makes far more sense to go with that

Get both! :D If you really had a slim choice, i would say PS3 because i hate the fact i'm paying to play online because mircosoft wants to milk more money out of my wallet. Plus you have the more up to date technology such a Blu-Ray. Yeah theres a lot more people that play xbl and say how bad PS Online is, but it's free so i really can't complain much.

By the way, uncharted 3 looking amazing.

Only thing i really hate is PS3 Controllers, they dont feel comfortable in my hand! Buy an adaptor and plug in your xbox 360 Controller if you have one ;)

Microsoft makes you pay and Sony doesn't because xbl is far superior to psn..
if you
r friends have an Xbox, get an Xbox.

I prefer PS3, mainly because of the high quality and bluray. Ngl xbox is better for online gaming, but I'd rather have my PS3.

personally i'd go for the PS3 i reckon it's just personal preference though whichever you prefer, i wouldn't go as far to say one was better than the other because at the end of the day they're both intended for the same purpose which is gaming, which they both do very well.

What's wrong with PSN?

What's wrong with PSN?

In all fairness, PSN is worse in content and does seem to go down a lot more then XBL for maintenance but tbh, I'd rather the odd day where it goes down then paying ~£40 a year.

Well downloading content is a pain in the *** because you have the download it AND install it which i do hate, so yes i agree the content isnt the best but just the online play is fine with me even if you cant party chat.

Apart from the fact that all my friends have Xbox, which obviously isn't the fault of Sony, I prefer PS3 :)

For a number of reasons I prefer my PS3: 1. Me and my Dad rent movies from Blockbuster and if I want to watch a movie on my own that my dad has rented, then I can watch it on Blu-Ray because my dad doesn't rent DVDs any more.
2. Better exclusive games on PS3. This might really sound ignorant but I can only name one game that is exclusive to Xbox, and that's Forza (also the Kinect games but since I don't have a kinect I won't judge them).
3. Free online. I think the main reason people get a PS3 is for the free online because ultimately £40 a year is a lot of money if you don't use your Xbox a lot or if you don't have a particularly vastamountof friends or games. I think if you have both consoles then you really have to decide which collection of games you wish to pursue. For me I chose my PS3, simply because I won't really be paying for Xbox Live after it runs out unless I have some money spare.

I wasn't aware that Halo was only on Xbox?

Halo, Gears of War, Fable, Crackdown, to name a few others, their is plenty of exclusives on the xbox, not to mention all the arcade games, quite a few of those are exclusive as well.

Honestly PS3 doesn't exactly have a huge selection of worth while exclusives either, LBP, Motorstorm, Killzone and Uncharted are the only ones I can think of and I honestly think LBP is the only good one out of those.

Getting a console should be based on nothing more than what games do you want? Will you actually play it often enough to justify paying xbox live or would it make more sense to go free? If the only service you actually care about is online gaming then PS3 has that fine, if you want a better online gaming experience then the xbox wins hands down, not to mention the fact your friends have xbox, that's something else to consider.

Honestly I'd go for the xbox, it's cheaper, it can do pretty much everything the PS3 can do, apart from play blu-rays, your friends actually have them and the service is far better, paying £40 a year shouldn't be considered a draw back at all, it's not exactly like £40 is much money.

I have both and I stand by that the PS3 is the better console but the Xbox is the more social console.

And given the evidence of new consoles I'd get a PS3 because they won't be replaced for a while as yet.

What about browsing the internet? As far as I'm aware the Xbox can't do that...?

You're limited to what you can do on it, obviously theres no flash player (Youtube works though) and I'm guessing its quite difficult to navigate with too. No perks to using it all imo.

People buy PS3 because of:

FREE ONLINE
BLUE RAY

which means their friends have it too..

With blue ray, you have to BUY a blue ray dvd anyway so that defeats the argument...

xbox:

yes you have to pay for xboxlive
HD Ready

with HD you don't need to buy a 'HD Dvd'... Most TV's now days are HD so you won't have to buy anything else apart from a HDMI Cable.

If most of your friends have an xbox i say you get a 360,becauseyou'll have people to play with instead of playing with a few amount of friends or complete randomers.

Reason I got an Xbox 360 was because it looked more appealing than a PS3. Srsly.

I'm sorry but browsing the internet on a PS3 is not a perk, you can't do it while doing something else, despite being the "super computer" people seem to think it is, it's terrible to use and it's just slow, I'd sooner use my phone.

Xbox is better
Keep in mind that PS3 games are also made on blu-ray disks which can hold up to 25-50gb of storage where the traditional dual layer dvd that xbox uses holds about 9gb, which allows making bigger and better games. Uncharted 3 for PS3 just hits the maximum storage on the blu-ray which is around 50gb which is why you probably won't see it on xbox 360, and uncharted 3 is one of the coolest games i've ever played in my life.

Bare in mind also Naughty Dog are owned by Sony, and the Uncharted IP belongs to Sony and the chances are the data is not compressed.

Lol what, Xbox Live has security flaws like PSN. Gears of war might be a good game, but it doesn't alone justify purchasing a console and the things you stated in the previous post was purely opinion apart from the bluray. And just saying, I only purchase blurays now (but I barely buy any sort of film or TV series, infact it's 3 Doctor Who boxsets, all of Torchwood and Transformers 2).

I'm a PS3 fan, and I really feel PS3 is sleeker. Xbox 360's menu is not refined enough, and certain games on PS3 have extra features (Final Fantasy XIII is one of them) that just make playing so much more fun.
If you really are serious about playing with your friends however, get an Xbox, if more are there.
Ultimately the most popular console is the Wii

Of course it can, nothing is 100% safe from hacking, but that shouldn't be a factor thats taken into consideration when buying a console, unless it has a history of security breaches.

PS3 for me although I mainly use mine for DVD/Blu- Ray (well will when I get a better TV) and online content. They are easy to overheat though, not sure about the xbox.

I was looking at an xbox once and my mate said he had one and found Halo was really at the time the only thing that kept most people buying it (personal opinion I know).

I would say that yeah an Xbox might not have been hacked recently or whatever but Sony knows where it went wrong and knows how to protect next time, does Microsoft?

At school I'm fighting a losing battle because these people know nothing about technology/computers/consoles and therefore cannot see past the fact that "Xbox is better". According to them a writer in PS3 magazine admitted that Xbox had better graphics, how can that be when a more detailed/better game can be put on to a Blu-Ray disc and not on to the regular DVD's that xbox's use.
