Shoutbox, make it happen. kty.
Thanks for posting a suggestion! We have had shoutbox/chat systems over the years and they didn't really work out well. They may be used now but my two main concerns are:
If posting decreases further because users are using the chat system. If so, bad idea.
Moderation of the shoutbox. Moderation would need to be easy and would have to be part of the chat system.

i usually say lol no but i wouldn't mind it happening now. everyone's usual reaction is "no-one will use it" but it was used quite a bit on a saturday night when we had it a while back. don't think i'd use it now simply cause it was fun back then for the sheer immaturity that went on in there which i wouldn't do now............. it was too expensive for the amount it was used last time irrc.
not a massive fan of shoutboxes. and i don't think we're getting enough posts to implement a feature that may distract users from posting threads.
i don't like the idea, a majority of the users won't be as active in threads and people will probably be immature whilst using it.

hmm interesting suggestion, something I may look into introducing maybe a few days a week or something like that. I know a couple of other fansites have shoutboxes but only make them viewable like on a Friday/Saturday

Kills the site, bandwidth wise. Also stops people from posting. Theres little positives about it

I wouldn't say it stops people from posting, I know on other forums that I use that have shoutboxes I will still post and have a look at the shoutboox. Other fansites that have shoutboxes still manage to get a decent amount of posts as well, if it's something that's only there once or twice a week I don't think it would affect post count that dramatically really. Maybe something that we can trial and see what happens.
I'll discuss it with Matt, David and Jin regarding the bandwidth issues as I know it was something that may have been a problem in the past & I guess with the downtime we have sometimes I don't want to make it any worse :o

It makes the forum slower though :(
We've had a external shoutbox before. It was the biggest waste of money...ever

Yeh I think something that CH used to do before, 'Shoutbox Friday' would be a cool idea, where people could post on a Friday evening or something just to interact. Could even bring people together more. :)
i think one day a week would be nice, however much i dislike shoutboxes. maybe not like a friday night cause there is an older demographic on the forum now and i'd think they'd be out, but like a wednesday or a midweek thing?

I do agree it was a waste of money but there are other alternatives and the person who did buy it in the first place is no longer here.

If we introduced it then I think we'd probably have it one day during the week and one day during the weekend too as that's the day we have most of our visitors and would probably be used more as well, no doubt it would be a full day and not just of an evening anyway :o!

Why not make it a external yet a vBulletin extra page, So say How FAQ's are on a seperate page, do that then code it in. I can easily enough code it so Dave would have no problem, by doing that it wont slow the page downs too much plus it won't be totally external like the other piece of junk

Even considering one would be mad! It would need constant moderation which no one has time to do and would draw people away from posting, which is something we definitely don't need during this quiet period.

If you are going to implement it, Have Box Mods :)
So you should already have the function of banning on the shoutbox, so you can ban the users. Then the moderators still have their usual jobs, box mods report people who shout be banned from the forum directly.

Not a massive fan of this idea Having it once a night, hmm okay maybe we could have a game or a quiz made up as well where we can all join in and win VIP or something? Hiring new mods seem silly for the shoutbox if it's going to be up once a week so maybe the current mods will be able to moderate it too?
I'm not totally for it but if it happens maybe a quiz would be a nice addition to it?
Inseriousity.

I've always liked the idea of shoutboxes and don't really think there's any harm to posting as people make out. If anything it might encourage more users who generally just use hxf for staff purposes or cos their group of friends use it rather than posting may come out of their shell a bit more and get more involved with a wider group of people.

It seems better to have it starting at say 5 and having it last throughout the night as thats when it's more active. Besides the moderators now do not monitor the forum 24 hours a day and quite a few people do report posts. I can't even see it being a popular thing during the day really (depending on the day though)

There will be about 16 members who will be able to moderate it so I don't think we would need to go out our way to hire anyone just to moderate the shoutbox for one or two days a week.

The way I see it as is the forum is a community and it shouldn't all be about post count (all be it important) but also the community that the forum has. Richie posted something in a thread about members being all 'i cba posting a thread you post a thread instead' mood, I think if we introduce a shoutbox for a few days a week it will get people talking a bit more in that and people who no doubt wouldn't normally talk to each other, talking to each other in it. If it helps bring the community together a bit more then I don't see it as a 'silly' idea really. Like I've said though it will be introduced as a trial, if it works then great, if it doesn't then we can say that we tried it and it didn't work, it won't harm anyone really :P
Obviously moderation of it is something that will need to be looked into and probably some shoutbox rules introduced (and probably banning [@]@Stephen![/@]; from it) but that's something that Brandon and myself will discuss before we introduce it :P

Imagine the spam forum and then times it by 10. The shoutbox wont be used for anything other than talking crap and in the long run wont do the forum any good. I agree, it shouldn't all be about post count but there are more efficient ways to involve the community without resorting to something like this.

There's quite a lot of decent discussion in the spam forum. Just because there isn't any meaning to a thread doesn't make it worthless. I agree with Scott, there's more to a community than post count, it's how people interact with each other. I think the best staff bonding isn't when there's a game of OMGpop (although these are good too) but when there's a bit of banter and conversation in the spam threads. Don't see how a similar principle to that can't be extended to the wholeforum
I'm not totally for it but there's no harm in trying it out on a trial basis and then we can judge if its a good idea or not. :)

Think we may have a problem with offering it to donators because we are only allowed to offer aesthetic privileges. I don't think the shoutbox includes that, I may be wrong.

Yeah I'm trying to see if they removed it but from what I have read it still may be a donator feature.

Nah it was a day for all non-members and then the rest were just donators. Although I'm not aware of anyone in management (at the time) telling me about the removal. The box in general simply got removed when they re-vamped to a new layout, although may even still be there for donators as I never visit it anymore. Although to be fair, other official fansites are getting away with murder (according to Habbo) by offering stuff like special udertitles and stuff, just under the name 'donator'. Basically, a lot of the VIP features just under the donator name. Might be a good idea to either let Habbo know about this or to try and implement it ourselves and see what Habbo says :P. But then again the guys who are there now are quite incompatible to say the least :P.

I didn't say the spam forum or its posts were worthless but there are more ways of getting members together than bringing something to the forum which could potentially drain posting.
At least its a trial and not a permanent thing.

I was hesitant to give into this idea on the basis that throughout Habbox history it has been rejected. However if the chat box is only available for X amount of days a week I don't think it will put a strain too much on posting on the forum.
My only concern in post decline is the spam forum because the shout box will maintain a spam like nature. I personally believe it would be a good idea to modify the shout box to only allow users who have made 5 posts on the current day to send messages in the shout box. This way, all users would be able to see the content of the shout box, but if they want to take part in it they would need to make five posts first.

Really like that last suggestion Dave, think it would be a great way of encouraging members to post to get this feature. I also agree that there is a risk of it becoming used moreso than the spam forums etc which we obviously don't want because spam is always quite an active part of the forum.
Think its a good idea just to trial it and see what happens really. Not sure that it would be totally beneficial having it there permanemently however.

I see. Can anyone actually see an advantage to a shoutbox, cause I'm struggling.
Nope. So far the only positive I've seen is "WELL IT MIGHT NOT KILL FORUM ACTIVITY" which is hardly the greatest reason to implement a tool which can take away the need or desire to use the forum itself.
I think if we introduce a shoutbox for a few days a week it will get people talking a bit more in that and people who no doubt wouldn't normally talk to each other, talking to each other in it
If you want to build the community then don't give it something which can only create conservations that are entirely exclusive to those online at one single time period. A conversation that goes on in a thread can be accessed and added to by anyone at any time, and that is how new people become integrated into a community, not by giving them a small chance to be part of a chat which might not even happen and won't be recalled by anyone not present anyway.
I think the best staff bonding isn't when there's a game of OMGpop (although these are good too) but when there's a bit of banter and conversation in the spam threads. Don't see how a similar principle to that can't be extended to the wholeforum
That principle is extended to the whole forum - it's called spam. As I've written above, a chatbox in which users have to be on at a very specific moment to use cannot possibly hope to contain any meaningful intercourse (lol intercourse) for the community as a whole.
I was hesitant to give into this idea on the basis that throughout Habbox history it has been rejected. However if the chat box is only available for X amount of days a week I don't think it will put a strain too much on posting on the forum.
...And then why would users bother with a feature that they can't access all the time? I know I for one would be less than happy to find that partway through an interesting conversation I was cut off because it was no longer deemed an appropriate time for me to be talking - at which point it would probably move to a spam thread, which would then be permanent inclusive for all members, and suddenly I'd wonder why I didn't just go there in the first place, since it's a much better setting for conversation to grow in.

This thread - TL;DR
Don't see the need for a shoutbox? People moan that hardly anyone posts anymore, so we install a shoutbox - which will decrease the amount of posts we get.
It also refreshes every so often instead of being real time, which is annoying. There's also the fact we have around 20/30 members on at a time(average), so any conversation you attempt to have on the shoutbox isburiedwith all other chats.
Oh, and can we disable text formatting in the shoutbox? People will type like thisHaBbOxShOuTbOxand that's ******* annoying. You've also allowed image embedding and other stuff, fun!
I've hidden the chatbox, but is there a way to disable the 'subforum' header, so to speak?

I fail to see the point in adding this to the forum,
if people want to chat on the forum:
SPAM FORUM
If people want to have instant chat:
HXHD
I don't see the purpose in this worthless redundancy that is *such an issue* to moderate in the first place.
[@]@xxMATTGxx[/@] the majority in the list (cameron, logan, shaz (ithink), abi) are for posting images.

Agreed with this.
Although, if people want an 'instant' chat and don't use habbo, then install flashchat or something with a link in the navbar.

Loving how the GM has stopped by this thread and addressed the issue of random bans (albeit in a "I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT'S HAPPENING" way) but STILL said absolute bugger all about why this was even added against all proof that it was unnecessary and potentially damaging to forum activity

Okay guys. I have unbanned everyone because either they are for posting images, or because of a rulebreak near 1 hour 30 minutes ago. You all now know of the pictures rule (which you can't do anyway) and all other forum rules apply including the no more than 3 lines at once rule. So any bans from now on shall have a perfectly valid reason.

I said in the shoutbox I will remove it if someone buys me Habbo VIP! But I guess that won't work but I also stated that I no longer like the shoutbox in the shoutbox a few minutes ago. I doubt someone will get me the VIp so I shall remove in the next few minutes.

I'm also incredibly concerned if Scott was even made aware this was going to happen, it seems like a lot of things are being done to the forum lately that he's not being informed about.

To be honest it was his and other peoples ideas to bring it to the forum in the first place. The only thing I can remember that he didn't know about was that dual game thing.

Which there is no use for anyway. When the novelty of it wore out after the first week or so, no one uses it anymore :P.

What did I miss? :P It seems there was a shoutbox for a few minutes, I guess all the evidence it would not work overwhelmed a trial run of it? I thought you all learnt last time that shoutboxes simply do not work :P

I don't think it will be a good idea, like others have said it will slow down the forum. If we had more users it might work.
I would like to see it on certain nights which I think is the plan. Not 100% however.

what. even after the 10 minute disaster it was?
The decision lies with Forum Management. I would like it to be tried a bit more :)

Why? How many times does an idea need to fail miserably before people work out that it's just not a good thing to keep pushing for?

one would hope forum management (being the sensible people that i know scott + brandon are) saw how much of a disaster it was and just laid the idea to rest. or left it for the mods to use.

What I don't get is why management get to push through their stupid ideas when they're met with resistance but they stonewall us on our own suggestions.

Two words: Power complex ;) Give it time and they give in, it took them about 4 years to finallly allow all abbreviations unless they are directed at someone to insult them.
