I got the 4S a few weeks ago, the volume buttons seemed to be really loose and when I tapped the back of the handset there was a rattling noise. I rang vodafone and they probably thought I was mad cause no1 had apparently reported the same problem... Anyway I got my relaplacement the volume buttons aren't loose they're alright but still when I slightly tap the back it sounds like something inside is rattling?
I know it's not an issue as such I just wouldn't expect a handset which retails at half a grand to rattle when it shakes... Especially cause apple always bang on how they're designed so great...
But yeah like I said not an issue just now I've noticed it's dead annoying and was curious to see if anyone else has experienced the same?

My guess would be something to do with the gyrometer thing?
To say it's "dead annoying" though is bordering on ridiculous even for a pedant.

Wouldn't be, the gyroscope is so minutely small:http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/iPhone-4-Gyroscope-Teardown/3156/1

Whatever it is, it will be harmless. It could be something like the micro-Sim inside, or the battery - assuming the battery isn't bolted down. I'd assume it's slightly loose so it doesn't heat up as much, but this is just guessing :P
Where abouts is this rattle? You could pin point the sound, look at an image of an open iPhone and discover what it is from that. Google seems to suggest it's either the auto-focus lens, proximity sensor or some sort of bumper.

They're supposedly meant to :P. Try holding it face down and then tap around where the camera is.

It's around where the camera is, and I did read before that it was the auto-focus lens.
