View Full Version : How will Habbox React to this?

After extensive deliberation and an in-depth analysis of global browser trends, we have decided to drop support for both Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 and 7 with the release of vBulletin 4.2.

Given their rapid decline in market share over the past year, Microsoft's recent decision to follow Chrome and Firefox with the implementation of silent updates (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/12/15/ie_9_silent_updates/), and the numerous hacks/kludges we've implemented in vB4 specifically for IE 6 & 7, we've concluded that continuing support will rapidly become untenable over the coming year.

This has been a difficult decision for the vBulletin team. While we respect the needs of all of our customers, dropping support for IE 6 & 7 will allow us to improve user experience for the vast majority of license holders, more effectively leverage our development resources, and enable us to move forward with exciting new vB4 projects.

We will support IE 6 & 7 in the upcoming release of vBulletin 4.1.11, and any additional 4.1.x release that may follow. This change will only go into effect with the 4.2.x series.

Please feel free to discuss this change - HERE (https://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php/392486-IE-6-no-longer-supported).

Thank you for you continuing support of vBulletin 4!

Sincerely,

The vB4 Team

Obviously some people e.g ~ [@]@FlyingJesus[/@] still use poor internet explorer.

Finally someone has found a solution to eliminate him

I don't think it'll be much of a problem though, just a few errors.

I'm not quite sure what you're asking here because it's quite oblivious what is going to happen.

"Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 and 7"

Those are two versions no one should be using right now. Even Microsoft doesn't support the first one, not quite sure about IE7. We have always said anyone who wishes to use Internet Explorer must at least upgrade to IE8 if running Windows XP and if they are running on Windows Vista and Windows 7 they should upgrade to IE9. I would assume [@]@FlyingJesus[/@] would be using IE8 or IE9 and therefore doesn't really affect him. The numbers for 6 and 7 should probably be low as most people would of got the latest versions through Windows Updates or use another browser such as Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Opera etc.

If and when the time comes for the version that drops support for IE6 and IE7, I'm sure we will warn everyone and advise them to upgrade to the latest version of Internet Explorer or use alternative browser.

7% i guess is small but its still some people, You can check in cPanel how many people viewed Habbox in IE 6 & 7 that would be a nice thing to see.

I assume it will still work for 8 and above so no real loss. If anybody is using ie7 or below tehy dont deserve to use the forum anyway

[@]@GoldenMerc Habbox.com doesn't support IE 7 and below either. Many websites are phasing &lt[/@]; IE8 out, so it shouldn't be too bad. I think users like [@]@FlyingJesus[/@] use IE 8 and although this is an extremely old and outdated browser as well, HxF and Hx.com *should* both work fine in it.

dunno how people deal with ie but unless they're running like windows 98 they'll have been pretty much forced to upgrade to the latest version anyway.

Phasing out IE6/7 makes sense because there's literally no reason whatsoever to be using them. I'd obv take issue with them making IE8 unworkable as that quite literally forces me to use one of the browsers which I don't like (Firefox is ok I guess but the others are just ugly and serve me no use) as IE9 requires a completely different version of Windows - one which I'm not willing to shell out for when I have absolutely no need to. Until XP becomes as entirely defunct as Windows 98 then it'd be irresponsible to create updates in important software/programs that render it unusable. Note that I said important stuff so the duel plugin doesn't count :P

You don't want to use FIrefox because it looks ugly? IE8 renders pages ugly :P

Nope said the others are ugly :P things look pretty much the same on IE and FF, I just don't like the way history works on FF so much which is why I prefer not to use it

I think most members have the use of multi browsers anyway so shouldn't be too disruptive.

Perfectly reasonable thing to do, IE8, IE9, Chrome & FF is enough.

800 days.. You should probably make the move to 8 when that comes out later this year.

Mainstream support ended in 2009. LTS support ends in 2014.
