View Full Version : I want to help a not so financially stable friend out

I've lived for where I am now my entire life and several years ago I became friends with someone called Dimitry. Dimitry's parents used to live in the USSR and his father, against his will, was forced to be involved in a sort of military/policing job in the USSR. Whilst the Union was collapsing his family legitimately escaped. They were permitted entry into another nearby country until they managed ro secure citizenship in Canada. He's always been bad off. Ever since I've known him he's never had an extra dollar to spend anywhere but he absolutely never complains about his financial situation. He currently maintains the highest AP grades in the school (he constantly tells me I should feel blessed to live in a country with such a good education system and I agree with him) but despite this he can't afford to go to University. It has ALWAYS been this guy's dream to help people, and since I met him he has ALWAYS wanted to pursue becoming a doctor (more recently he wishes to go into designing medical equipment for hospitals).

I do not know how scholarships work across the pond but here you have to apply for each one. There are scholarships for woman, pregnant woman, aboriginals and African Canadians. There is a pathetic three Scholarships for white males. Two of which Dimitry cannot apply for because of living circumstances however I found one scholarship which the first step to getting was winning a random draw. I entered Dimitry's name in the draw every day for a long time (as you were allowed to do so) and his name for the scholarship was drawn. Since his name was pulled in this random draw he now has to get the most "votes" on a Facebook page in order to get the scholarship.

It's completely outrageous that they don't give Dimitry a scholarship because of his academics but I'm going to do absolutely everything in my power to make sure he gets the most legitimate votes possible. It's not his fault that his family came to Canada in the conditions that they did, or that he wasn't born in Canada. He's the smartest guy I know and deserves to go to University, end of discussion.

The link to the Facebook voting page is http://on.fb.me/wVrx7H and his name is Dimity Vinogradov. Either he gets this scholarship, or he doesn't go to University and that would actually be one of if not the most unfair thing I've ever witnessed within the proximity of my community in my entire life.

*sigh* this is the "equality" that feminism as opposed to true egalitarianism offers us. I'm sure the other applicants are just as worthy but voted for your friend all the same, and wish the best of luck to him wherever his studies take him

Is there a local paper you could contact bout it? my local paper tends to run these types of stories and isn't all doom and gloom like the national press. i dont have a facebook account but I wish dimitry every success. :)

Does Canada not have a similar system to Student Finance England?

Surely you can't be expected to pay tuition and living fees all up front?

i find it very sad that someone's educational future will be decided via a facebook poll.

It's not fair at all, especially considering his average is over 95% and he's in three AP courses. If he was a girl, or if he was aboriginal or African-Canadian there would be dozens of scholarships he would be able to get really easily. There's a girl the other year who had a 70% average and got a 40 thousand dollar scholarship. I don't think it's fair that you can get a scholarship for being a girl, or being a certain skin color. I think it should be based off who's willing to work the hardest and who needs the money the most.

obviously i can't relate as the system here in the uk is basically an education for "everyone", but it is tragic and i hope yr friend succeeds in life whether he gets this scholarship or not.

You are very kind to help your friend out. But I'm sure there are thousands of students who have similar problems. And it is really nonsensical at how they pick the best application out. Shouldn't they use interview method or any other better methods? Judging them via polls are extremely unfair as it will be based on popularity. However, I voted for him and I wish him all the best in getting this scholarship. He's very lucky to have a friend like you and trust me. If he's a smart guy, he'll succeed in whatever he wants to do because universities don't mean much nowadays. :)

I think one of the other people in the running might be cheating by making new accounts and voting for themselves (I've been keeping track of the time in-between their votes and they've been following a rough pattern). You can vote once a day so I've voted for Dimitry again today although if the other person is cheating he will be doing it again each day. This is going to be a difficult win I think.

Blah, another contestant got 40 votes in around 30 minutes and conveniently stopped after they were about 5 ahead of Dimitry. There's absolutely no way we're going to cheat to win this thing (I think that's probably fraud if we did) but it does suck that he's losing now.

I've voted but I find it absolutely ridiculous that it's decided via Facebook if this student does or does not go into University. Based on what you've said he seems like the kind of guy who actually WANTS to do well.

I've just voted again. He's only about 10 off the guy who's in the lead and I saw that guys statement and it said, "In grade eleven, I made one of the best decisions of my life. I decided to join the choir at school. I started out uncertain of myself, singing very quietly, but over time I became more and more confident singing in front of an audience. My added confidence hasn't been limited to singing, as I have noticed throughout my classes that since joining choir I am much more courageous in everything I do. I look to take my newfound confidence with me to Saint Mary's and I welcome the challenges that I may face."

I swear for a Uni statement being in choir is one of the ********* reasons you could find, it has nothing about your course and only gives a very minor and irrelevant aspect of your personal skills. You're friends one if actually really well written, so that's why I hate what the hell this college is doing. You never make this into a popularity contest.
