View Full Version : Help about The Pill/Contraception?
I've been on the Pill since I was 12 to control periods, I was on Microgynon 30 for a year but it gave me depression and made my periods worse, I then got switched to Loestrin 20 which I've been fine on ever since. I don't really rely on the pill for contraception, more to regulate my periods really. My GP is keen to switch me off the pill to the injection or the implant. The injection is in the bum which I don't mind to be honest but I'm mostly hearing bad things about it. Has anyone had any good experiences with the injection? I'm hearing storys about infertility and stuff on it. The implant however, I don't think I fancy at all, it's just one of those things :(

Right - I am male and have no personal knowledge of any of this but as soon as I read this I knew that my best friend went through all sorts of contraception methods. You are very kind to me so I thought I'd try to return the kindness by ringing her up and asking her what she thought of your question.
She advises against getting the injection. From her research, she says that it can cause osteoporosis in the long term which makes your bones very brittle and weak. She says there are a couple of other options you should consider like the patch and the ring if you are exploring all avenues. More than anything, though, she thinks you should consider getting off of birth control altogether. It's not good to be on it for too long for most women and if you started on it when you were twelve, there is a great possibility that your period has become more regular and manageable with age. That being said, that's just a possibility and birth control can be a life saver for so many women.
I know birth control helped my mom's coworker. She had something called 'fibroids', I think, on her uterine wall. They irritated things and when she got her period she would have to use a very absorbent tampon plus a pad. Even with that, she still had to change it a few times a day. In fact, she developed anaemia from all of the iron loss. She ended up taking some sort of birth control or hormone therapy to help her period and now she is fine.
I hope this helps! Good luck.
i have had a couple of friends who've had the injection who've had like an on-going period for 7 months when they've started.
i'd advise the implant.

My mum has the injection and she hasn't had any problems with it, it just varies from person to person everyone is different. I'd advise the implant. Just remember you can't rely on ANYTHING for 100% contraception there's always a small risk with all these things that you'll end up being the odd 1% and get pregnant, likely? Probably not but you never know!
Hope you find what works best for you anyway
My GP said it's unlikely my periods will be regular again because I'm still having a bit of trouble with the pill with them, I was on for 3 weeks at a time and I don't want to go back to that again, I'd probably consider the implant but some of my friends moaned it hurts and I know a few people who have been on literally all the time on it, the injection seemed like an easier option for me than the implant really. My step sister had the implant so I think I might ask her about it :/

I'm in the same boat as you. I've been on the pill since I was 14 to help my periods and nothing seems to help, for the last 7 years my periods have been hell. I'm on a pill at the moment that I've just stopped taking because it's making me so so bloated, but I've not had a period in like 4 months because I took the pill without a break. I'm considering going back to the doctor because I want something that's going to ease the pain but is still healthy for my body. I want the injection but I was told by my doctor I couldn't have it because 1) I'm a lesbian and 2) I'm not sexually active with a man. The implant is good from what I've heard, but the doctor also told me I couldn't have that for the same reasons. Looks like it's a lifetime of hot water bottles, pain killers & chocolate for me! Lmao :(
Why can't you have it because you're a lesbian? it seems really bad for a doctor to say that. I think I might try out the injection

Because it's for people who have sex with men, so there's more risk of them getting pregnant. Because I'm not sleeping with men, there is no risk of me getting pregnant and it'd be a waste. It costs the NHS more to give out the injection than the pill. I'm not too bothered I guess, just would be nice to have nice periods for once. Boys haveno idea.
Oh right, I hope it gets better for you :( I'm really sick of it haha, the pill was ok for ages but it seems to have worn off now

tell me about it. i'm so ammune to pills now i just think it's a waste of time me taking them :(
I have some friends on both the injection and who have the implant. Personally listening to them i am dead set against the injection as it can really mess up your hormones. The implant i have heard both good and bad things. My gp tried to get me to have the implant but if the pill is working relatively well and your having little if any problems with it then why change it ?
My friend on the implant very rarely gets a period but when she does she is on for anything from 4 weeks to 8 weeks which personally i would not cope well with.
Give it some serious thought tho but imo the pill is the best method from hearing from other people anyway. x
Its not been working very well for a while tbh, which isn't really a problem as I split up with my bf as I last saw him in september, but I started getting breakthrough bleeding again and it's getting worse, I've been bleeding for 2 weeks when I'm not even on my 7 day break so when I do get to my 7 day break I'll have been bleeding for up to or more than 3 weeks which is how my periods were before I went on the pill. Like Emma, I think I'm becoming immune to it if that's even possible.
As soon as I've finished these packs I'll have a word with my GP and see which she feels is best for me to be on tbh.
I'm on cerazette now which is a progesterone only pill. Maybe it's worth trying that?

i'm on loestrin 20 and from what i've heard it's got very little hormones in; maybe you just need a new pill?
there are so many different pills, it's just finding the one that's good for you

my ex girlfriend got on the pill, think it was Yaz or something - anyway, her **** got ******* massive, like she outgrew all her bras, it was great!!!!!!!
but now she's fat
lol I am pretty fat too :/ Not that much but I'm like a size 14/16 because I had a lot of weight gain from the first pill thta was a high dose and now I can't shift it. I been to doctors today and she said because of the bone mass problem with the injection to wait a bit and that she doesn't want to put me on the implant because I'll bleed constantly. I've been put on an oestrogen free pill that's low dose called mercilon but this one doesn't even prevent cervical cancer so that kinda worries me, it also increases my risk of epilepsy and my dad had epilepsy which isn't good :/

Lmao, at this post... Actually made me laugh out load in lesson...

Most of my female friends are on the implant... They say they prefered it that having the injection thingy... I didn't ask details about it because it doesn't really matter to me but yeah... That's what they've said

I'm not on the pill nor the implant I think it's a case of if you don't need it why do you have it if you get me.
Anyway, if you were to be intimate with someone often (not just once in a blue moon) I would seriously suggest the pill as the person who introduced me and my boyfriend once had a condom split twice whilst with his ex girlfriend, she got pregnant but she lost it. The other day I found out that his new girlfriend is pregnant the same thing happened and well that's it at the moment. I would say you can't be too careful and I'm sort of scared of going on the pill because of the side effects; but I would have that chat with my Mum when I'm ready.
These people in my college were talking about different contraception and they said 'depo' think it's a form of pill not sure what that does but I would suggest looking at different ones balancing the side effects etc.
Yeah my doctor wants to keep me on the pill though because I forgot what it's called but I have something wrong with my periods and I'd be on for like 3 weeks constantly. I do honestly want to go on depo though, the pill is ok but both my cousins were conceived on the pill lol. I'm just gonna see how mercilon goes for now though and wait a bit because my GP said the earlier I get the injection the more risk I have of developing osteoporosis
