You've heard all the rumors, and now Apple has finally confirmed the details of its next iPad launch event. It will take place March 7th in San Francisco. The company is keeping things suitably vague beyond that, promising only that it has "something you really have to see. And touch."

Apple's going to have to pull something out of a hat to maintain their lead on the tablet market and to prepare for the disruption that Windows 8 will bring, I guess we'll find out soon..

I'm quite looking forward to seeing what the new iPad will do different to the iPad 2. I bought my iPad 2 back in August and it still looks like new (touch wood). I'm not really sure what else they can do other than improve the camera (which I don't use because I have a camera...) - it's fast enough too! :P

Is there any interesting rumours of what to come?
Better processor(s), graphics and longer battery life is becoming very tiresome for announcements. Even the software announcements aren't what they used to be, look at the iPhone 4S for instance, all they could come up with is "Siri".
I suppose it just goes to show that they're pretty much there and it doesn't need much more hardware/software wise :(

Retina display.
Also, we were pretty much there with the software Nokia had on their phones... they're just running dry on idea or longing them out to maximise profits :P

So:
- Retina
- Better Camera (Doubt drivers allow 1080p), 5MP is actually getting pretty low in the mobile/tablet space apple ought to watch out.
- Quad-core graphics
- LTE
Nothing magical, everything very obvious. Just tells us they'll have LTE in the iPhone5 / iPhone4ssssssss

It's confirmed 1080p, nothing special though... phones have been doing that since early last year.

Bit confusing in regards of the name but hey ho.
Apparently it's called 'new iPad'. However the iPad 3 name will probably become more popular.

I am torn as to whether I really need the iPad 3 when I already have a 64GB iPad 2 with 3G in mint condition. I obviously feel drawn towards it because it is new, pretty and exciting but I feel like I would be wasting my money if I went for the new one just because it was new. The features they are putting on the 3 are nice but nothing I feel that really justifies buying it. I've never felt that my iPad 2 was too slow in processing, too dull in graphics or laggy on the internet. I believe I will keep my iPad 2 and just upgrade to the new one if I ever break or severely damage this one. It is in perfect condition right now. I just can't reason buying the 3.

I feel exactly the same. I really don't understand retina display, quad-core or whatever else they're preaching but I really don't see the issue with the current iPad 2. I'm still astounded by the quality of graphics on it, and I have no complaints to make about the speed. What incentive is there to encourage me to buy new? :P

Exactly! I am glad I am not the only one that feels this way. The iPad 2 was a huge jump ahead of the original iPad but the third generation of iPad isn't much of a leap forward from the iPad 2 for most general users.

People thought that when the SNES was out, now try comparing a SNES with a PS3 :P
IMO If you have an iPad/don't have one, get the iPad 3, if you have the iPad 2 you may as well wait a year for the iPad 4.

That's a bit misleading, though, since the next generation upgrade from the SNES wasn't the Wii or Playstation 3. I totally believe in improvement over time and while I will probably skip this iPad generation because it offers nothing that attractive to me that would incite me to upgrade. I am definitely loyal to the product and as long as they continue to make changes for the better I will continue buying Apple and iPads as I need them. This time, though, the changes don't really make me need or even want the new product.

I don't mean to double post, but I don't think this warrants a new topic. Apple just pushed the new iOS update (5.1) to my iPad 2. It is downloading now. I know my friend got the iOS 5.1 update on his iPhone 4S earlier today but I just thought I'd note this to let people know Apple is releasing it and it should be available.

You're allowed to if it adds new information to the thread anyway! The iOS 5.1 update replaces the "3G" icon with "4G" on AT&T, not sure about other networks. The US have really ****** up the whole "4G" business.

It's not like there's actually an official 4G technology, you could call 2G - 4G and still be in the clear with the FCC.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4G#Requirements
There are definitely 4G specifications... the only two 'real' 4G technologies are LTE and WiMax:
LTE Advanced (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LTE_Advanced) standardized by the 3GPP (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3GPP)
802.16m (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/802.16m) standardized by the IEEE (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IEEE)(i.e. WiMAX)
In terms of mobile usage, the only viable 4G option is LTE due to the design of the specification/technology. Of course, we'll never hit any of these great speeds everyone touts for 4G because a) I don't see the backhaul to cell sites supporting it and b) the cell sites themselves split the bandwidth up between the amount of users on the cell.

Right, but currently there's no actual 4G (fully) capable technology at the moment.
Apparently apple has been plummeting in Tablet market share, it's to be expected since they were basically first to market but they seem to be losing share faster than with the iPhone:

Unless other companies start making tablets the same quality as Apple then I don't see them doing that well.

The screen is a big leap imo, and was one of the only reasons I would never buy one. Now it has a viable resolution it is a product to consider.

Just got an email about the new iPad from apple. I'm not really a fan of Ipad's myself due to the fact it's too big I'd rather have a smart phone for general on the go, a laptop for travelling and a pc at home.
My main problem with the iPad is aren't a load of phone manufactures rumoured to be making quad core smart phones that may hit the market soon? I'm no expert in the field but if this is true I'd of thought the iPad would have had it, I mean if a small phone can do it then a large tablet can

I've heard many people saying the battery life of an iPad was pretty decent already. But the battery itself has increased although does have the same amount of hours as the previous one.

Happens on all technology forums. But I only replied back to see if you had anything more to say on the matter as I personally didn't think it needed an improvement.

Well no, it's quite a big improvement to the battery life when you take into account it has LTE and that "Retina" display which will both suck on that battery like the world's ending.

You said it as if it was Apple's fault, they did pretty well to get 10 hours out of that thing considering the new tech. I'll also be leaving this image here, seeing as you seem to be on one tonight ;)

That's an increase to battery not battery life.
I shudder to think the hours they'll be able to get out of it when all the new battery tech comes out in the next couple of years though (Gaps in batteries to improve ability to hold charge, graphene batteries etc.).

In any case, I think that most can agree that while this is a great leap forward for those who are concerned with the Retina Display and faster processor, this isn't a 'knock out of the park' for most iPad users that will give incent to purchase the new one if they already have a very good specced iPad 2. It is definitely something that people will be buying if they don't already have an iPad and something that a minority group of users will upgrade to because they are very concerned with the hardware updates but for the most part I think Apple fell a bit in the middle with this next generation.
I don't know much about technology but i read an article about this new iPad and there's something that intrigues me. There's this new microphone icon in the
keyboard that can dictate emails. :O
This new iPad makes me wanna ditch my iPad 2 and get the new one because it has a better retina display and 5 MP Camera :( My iPad 2 camera is just horrible!

I can't imagine using the dictate settings - they're good for children or those with accessibility difficulities, but for everyone else it's best to avoid it like the plague. It's about as annoying as talking to your phone to do mundane, simple tasks you can do with a stroke of your hand and then it talking back to you. Imagine how annoying that would be ;)
