it's all good and well going to the gym, but you'll also need to trim down your calorie intake and what you actually eat. how much do you weigh and what's your waist size/shirt size & how tall are you?

http://www.myfitnesspal.com/
MyFitnessPal is really good. I use it just to see the average amount of calories I eat each day, but it allows you to input the exercise you do along with what you eat, etc. You're supposed to keep it updated with your weight so it tells you how much you'll weigh providing you keep up the current system. It's free and available for iPad, iPhone, Android and online.

It's somewhat unsafe to begin weight training before a certain stage of development, as you can seriously damage the natural growth of your muscles
Ben for waistline it'll say on the inside of your jeans

I was gonna say use Power90 but that involves weights.. maybe try without weights!
Also, I'm 21 and a size 32! Gawd.
Can't you just do pushups in your room for workouts? Start off with 10 then slowly increase, and PUSH yourself. When you think you cant do anymore do 2-3 more, that's where great athletes are born!

Shane you're also like 8" taller than him
Anywayyyyyyy as far as I'm aware cardio is your best bet for all-round fitness and weight loss, and since exercise releases some lovely hormones which make you feel good about yourself it's a pretty decent idea to have an exercise regime on all counts

I know. I'm imagining how "fat" this kid is though..
I used to run Ben. But my doctors told me that it wouldn't be a good idea to continue with that because I have the early stages of osteoarthritis. Running is easy to do (nothing really required) and fun .. if you slow jog. I used to run for a running team, I'm actually an ex 600m county champion XD.
Anyway if you go to the gym, if they have a cross trainer they are amazing for weight loss. The amount of calories that can be burned in an hour from those are a lot. If you stick with it the pounds will drop off.
Just don't stop eating entirely (not sure why Laura tells me). Best to eat regular meals but healthy options. I know healthy food sucks but if you're not going to exercise that's the best way.
Failing all that, liposuction haha!!
How can't you use weights yet?
if you don't wanna be fat, don't eat as much and do some exercise.
that's it. if you can't be arsed to that, then you can't be that bothered with being fat.
How can't you use weights yet?
14 is a little too young to start that, his body isn't even remotely fully developed yet. Probably best he waits!
Then again I see no problem in low weight, high reps.. more toning than anything

Light muscle workouts won't do much harm, I know a few boys who started young, my best mate had his own multi-gym at 12.

Your friends will probably pay for that later in life. Anyway, I'm judging he wants muscular strength not endurance and light weights cater to endurance.

That sounds ridiculous in my opinion.
Anyway if you are fat, just balance your diet, stop eating crap. My dad lost like 3 stone sticking to this plan of lots of vegetables every day with meats some days etc (it was very specific though, not just any old crap). While you probably won't need anything that extreme due to age, it just proves that a balance of everything is beneficial. Also lol.

How is it ridiculous..?
People have different bone structures. People have bigger bones than others, so they have more skin/fat.
It's proven that this is true.

Bone sizes will not have that much of a variation, nor will bone structure at this age. Skin will also not have huge differences with the only place where skin thickness will probably be noticable is your feet. Also by including skin and fat, you go against your original statement.
This is comparing an average human with no bone or growth disorders etc.

That’s an absolutely rubbish excuse, yes, some people do have larger frames, but all that means is that the bone density is slightly higher. It won’t make a huge difference on the scale.
Your BMI is roughly 25.8 but it’s probably slightly higher as you haven’t put your precise weight unless you weigh perfectly 12 stone. 25.8 is classed as overweight on BMI scales but obviously it doesn't take muscle mass into account, but obviously since you’re 14 and you are not a bodybuilder, it's probably quite accurate. You have a 32” waist, mine is 32-34 and I’m borderline 6ft3. Judging from all this, I would say you’re a bit overweight. I would advise going to a gym and speaking with a personal trainer, most places offer a free consultation; there they will discuss with you want goals you want to achieve and how to go about it. It won’t take long to lose weight and it will benefit you hugely in the future, with both confidence, and dare I say it, happiness.

Well, one bit of evidence for this is my friend. As I've already said. I'm currently on my phone so I shall show written evidence on this later.
Also when you're finding out your BMI you usually have to select what body build you are for it to be accurate.
Its practically common sense to know that people have different body builds.
Its usually determined by your genetic makeup. For example my friend Amys mother also has a large body structure but she isn't fat.

You do realise that the term ‘fat’ is subjective, meaning everyone has different opinions on what is ‘fat’ some would class it as being slightly overweight, others would say someone’s fat if they’re obese. Your friend Amy isn’t evidence.
Some BMI calculators may ask you for your body type, but that doesn’t matter unless, as I’ve already stated you’re a body builder etc. Your friend is most likely overweight, however I haven’t seen her or know anything about her to make a judgment.

I pardon that you excuse me for taking the liberty of looking at the photos you posted in the picture thread. Based on the info you have given on the forum including your photo and your current weight and height I would say that it is true that you are overweight. Try simple changes at first - try to make your diet a bit healthier each day, for example. You don't have to rush yourself to the gym and exercise if it is too much trouble for you. Granted, going to the gym will give you more muscle mass and faster results. Just bear in mind that something as easy as rewriting your diet and cutting some bad foods out can take off the weight that bothers you.

When doctors in hospitals first take you in they get your body type etc, so tbh it must matter.
And she really isn't overweight.
She has a rugby players body, and she got this from her mum. I mean honestly, everyone has different builds. Excuse me for trying to be nice and say he's not overweight, he might just have a different body build to everyone else!
And btw, Obese and fat are two completely different things in the terms of medical scienticts.
And my friend is evidence, as she gives examples to what I am saying. My body build is very small bones, so I weigh 5stone, she has much larger bones compared to me, so she weighs around 10stone.

Sorry, I’m lost as to what you’re talking about, please elaborate.
And she really isn't overweight.
Again, I don’t know her weight, height or waist/dress size to make a judgment.
She has a rugby players body, and she got this from her mum. I mean honestly, everyone has different builds.
A rugby players body? There are different roles in rugby which require different characteristics. For example, props are usually the stronger, heavier players. They need to be heavy as well as strong to give them the best chance of winning in the scrum. You wouldn’t have someone with the body type of a prop playing fallback as they need to be quicker so obviously the extra weight wouldn’t be helpful.
I presume you are using the term ‘rugby players body’ to describe the first example I used, which suggests that your friend is indeed, overweight/fat. Again, I don’t know this I can only summarize from what you’ve said.
Excuse me for trying to be nice and say he's not overweight, he might just have a different body build to everyone else!
Telling someone they aren’t overweight/fat when they are causes more harm than being truthful which might hurt their feelings initially, but it’s far better/healthier in the long run for that person.
And btw, Obese and fat are two completely different things in the terms of medical scienticts.
Yes, Obese is a medical term for the extremely overweight, Fat, is not a medical term, and again, is subjective.
And my friend is evidence, as she gives examples to what I am saying. My body build is very small bones, so I weigh 5stone, she has much larger bones compared to me, so she weighs around 10stone.
She weighs around 10 stone, not due to her bone density, but because of other differences e.g how tall she is, her fat content etc.

1) You said that BMI doesn't really matter.
2) If you don't know anything about her, then don't automatically jump to conclusions eg: she's overweight.
3) I'm using a rugby players body to mean that she has a rugby players body, as she plays rugby.. her whole family pretty much played rugby, so their bodies changed overtime to suit the roles that they're playing.
4) I am being truthful, from what I've seen of him, he isn't overweight, he looks like his bone structure is different. It's like someone has fleshy cheeks. That doesn't mean that they're fat, it just means that they were made different, because guess what, nobody is the same so everyone obviously has different bodies and structures.
5) Fat is just another term for overweight. Overweight is not obese.
6) She weighs 10stone DUE to her bone density. She is the same height as me, and eats WAY less than me, and I eat like a pig! So fat content definatly isn't a factor.
Ask any doctor or science teacher, and they will tell you that people appear to be larger than others because of their bones.

1) You said that BMI doesn't really matter.
what's that go to do with anything?
2) If you don't know anything about her, then don't automatically jump to conclusions eg: she's overweight.
as i said, i used logic to come to the conclusion that she is overweight and have given reasons why I came to that conclusion
3) I'm using a rugby players body to mean that she has a rugby players body, as she plays rugby.. her whole family pretty much played rugby, so their bodies changed overtime to suit the roles that they're playing.
as i said, the term 'rugby players body' is extremely wide. I love how you're trying to suggest she's evolved due to her parents playing rugby, so laughable.
4) I am being truthful, from what I've seen of him, he isn't overweight, he looks like his bone structure is different. It's like someone has fleshy cheeks. That doesn't mean that they're fat, it just means that they were made different, because guess what, nobody is the same so everyone obviously has different bodies and structures.
he doesn't have a different body to everyone else, sorry for using such an old phrase, but have you ever seen a big skeleton?...
5) Fat is just another term for overweight. Overweight is not obese.
no it isn't.
FAT
Adjective:
(of a person or animal) Having a large amount of excess flesh.
as you can see, the ammount of excess flesh isn't stated ,so it is subjective in the sense that everyone has differing opinions as to whether someone's fat or not. lucky for us there are systems to measure whether someone is overweight or not.
6) She weighs 10stone DUE to her bone density. She is the same height as me, and eats WAY less than me, and I eat like a pig! So fat content definatly isn't a factor.
sorry, are you a doctor? how could you possibly know she weighs 10 stone due to her bone density and that she isn't 10 stone just because she overeats and is therefore overweight?
Ask any doctor or science teacher, and they will tell you that people appear to be larger than others because of their bones.
no they won't.

Oh wow, I'm sorry, but are YOU a doctor then?
Considering my mum is a highschool teacher, she mainly teaches science and she said, and I quote: 'What this person is saying is utterly stupid, as everyone has different body structures, just like boys and girls bone structures are not the same. He/she needs to read up on their facts.'
And also the HEAD of science at our school taught us only last week about this.
And what I said about the fat = overweight is true, considering once again, we learnt it in school.
Did I ever say she evolved to have a rugby players body from her parents? No. What I said was that SHE is a rugby player, so her body ends up adapting its self in slight ways to suit being a rugby player.
If she had tiny little bones, like some people, they'd just snap.
And about the BMI, you said 'Some BMI calculators may ask you for your body type, but that doesn’t matter' so I just replied that it does matter.. before you start to try make me look like an idiot on saying stuff about BMI, maybe you should remember stuff that you wrote on previous posts?

No, I’m not, but I’m a lot older than you, I’ve looked a lot further into this topic than you have, and I don’t justify and use ‘my friend Amy’ as evidence to support my case which suggests my argument is a lot more valid as I don’t rely on my mum to help me.
Considering my mum is a highschool teacher, she mainly teaches science and she said, and I quote: 'What this person is saying is utterly stupid, as everyone has different body structures, just like boys and girls bone structures are not the same. He/she needs to read up on their facts.'
It’s cute that you got your mum involved, but just because she’s your mum, doesn’t make every sentence that comes out of her mouth fact. Obviously everyone has different body structure, hmm, didn’t I say that in an earlier post of mine? But it’s outrageous to suggest that your friend is 5 stone (double your weight) heavier than you due to her bone density, it’s simply not true.
And also the HEAD of science at our school taught us only last week about this.
I suggest you either pay more attention in school or make a complaint about your head for telling you lies.
And what I said about the fat = overweight is true, considering once again, we learnt it in school.
I’m sorry, but in a ‘grown-up’ discussion, “we learnt it in school" doesn’t cut it as evidence. I could say I studied it in college last week to back up my argument, it doesn’t make it any more true.
Did I ever say she evolved to have a rugby players body from her parents? No. What I said was that SHE is a rugby player, so her body ends up adapting its self in slight ways to suit being a rugby player.
Yes, you said “ her whole family pretty much played rugby, so their bodies changed overtime to suit the roles that they're playing.” Sounds like Darwin’s theory to me?
if she had tiny little bones, like some people, they'd just snap.
Your bones don’t magically grow because you play rugby, so this comments irrelevant.
And about the BMI, you said 'Some BMI calculators may ask you for your body type, but that doesn’t matter' so I just replied that it does matter.. before you start to try make me look like an idiot on saying stuff about BMI, maybe you should remember stuff that you wrote on previous posts?
Yes, your body types only relevant if you’re in the gym lifting weights five times a week. It doesn’t matter if your bone density is slightly higher, it won’t give you an option for that. It will for muscle mass, due to muscle weighing more, thus giving the extra option so you don’t have skewed results. Again, bone density won’t affet your results enough to make BMI irrelevant. It’s only irrelevant if you’re a body builder, which your friend amy, I’m guessing, isn’t, nor is ben…
Oh god. Arguing about something which I'm obviously correct in (as most people know) *removed*
Oh, yeh, sorry I didn’t realise you were correct because ‘your mum said so’ or you ‘learnt it in school’ or your magical friend Amy has magic bones which adapt to suit her rugby playing needs

Actually you claimed that this friend of yours was not overweight despite being 10 stone and the same height as you - unless you happen to be about 5'9" in which case you're likely to be dead at 5 stone then she is almost certainly overweight. Her being a bigger build does not affect this fact to a noticeable degree, unless her bones are made of lead or something.
Maybe YOU should rememer stuff that you've previously written.

when i decided to lose some weight for tenerife last month (i was by no means fat or overweight but who doesn't want to lose a pound or 2 before a holiday?) i didn't tell myself i was on a diet i just always watched what i ate. for example i chose a low fat sandwich, orange juice and a bag of fruit for dinner instead of a higher fat sandwich, crisps and cola
all i did was just make that small change and i ended up losing 4 pounds in around 30 days. if you did that combined with exercise (the most important thing for weight loss) you could be losing like 3 pounds a week

The technical term is a bigot, and such people are the root cause of just about every large-scale human travesty. If you are not willing to learn, do not argue

Then you're lying about being 5 stone, because anything under a BMI of 15 is extremely noticeable and enough to get you sectioned and 5'8" 70lbs is a BMI of 10.6, which I don't think is even possible to survive on
Unless you're an amputee or something

If you aren't lying, you're extremely deluded, as Tom has pointed out, it's almost impossible to live at that weight coupled with that height.

This. I'd guess 8 stone at a bare minimum.
As far as I'm concerned you are being misfed information, weight lifting at any age doesn't and will never stunt growth. EVER, unless of course, you fall over whilst lifting said weight.
Arnold Schwarzenegger (http://strongliftsinnercircle.com/forum/arnold-schwarzenegger-s-strength-stats-t10605.html), Lou Ferrigno, Dave Draper, Shaquille O’Neal, David Robinson, Karl Malone, Michael Vick, etc. They all started lifting weights in their early teens and are +6′ /1m82 tall.

This is obviously one source, but it also rules out the age of weightlifting (sort of)
http://www.livestrong.com/article/139091-what-is-right-age-start-lifting-weights/
Here's what it said for 13-14
At the age of 13 or 14, adolescents can begin to devise a more stringent and demanding workout routine. However, youths should still avoid lifting heavy weights. Lifting light weights with high repetitions will prove to be a secure and beneficial method of strength training.
I'd go to more sources and see what they say, but I can't be arsed.

I've always thought weight lifting can stunt growth because we need look no further than a history textbook where it states how people are getting taller over time. There was a period when people averaged 4ft and history textbooks tend to put it down to individuals undertaking hard labor as a young child. The article below is quite interesting though and could go against this idea (the part about confusing cause with effect is quite applicable in the modern age). Worth a read.

I don't recall anyone saying that it stunts growth, rather that it's potentially dangerous and can damage the muscles

Right, let's end this once and for all...
Isabelle Caro was a french model most famously known for being anorexic. She was 5ft 5, so 3 inches shorter than what you apparently are.
At the worst of her condition, she weighed 3 stone 13 lbs (1 lb off 4 stone).
Here she is, when she weighed slightly more (4 stone 2 lbs)
http://www.celebrityfluff.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/isabelle-caro.jpeg
Here's a photo of you
http://oi42.tinypic.com/216hbc.jpg
and you are supposedly 3 inches taller than her, you also look bigger than her...
Oh, btw, Isabelle died from her illness.
There is no way you are 5ft 8 and weigh 5 stone.

Just felt like this needed repeating. It is quite literally the same mindset as those who believe in natural white supremacy despite all logic, or who think that men's suffering doesn't matter because it hardly ever happens despite being presented with all sorts of studies and evidence to the contrary, and both of these types of people are people that I deal with almost daily and it absolutely kills any faith in humanity to know that someone can be so stupid in the face of fact and reason.

Don't play the victim card. I can't tell if you are trolling now, it's becoming that much of a joke. It's an insult to everyone here's intelligence for you to pretend that you weigh 5 stone whilst standing at 5ft8. The fact that you have posted a photo of yourself recently, which shows you are nowhere near anorexic pretty much ends this petty attempt of attention seeking or whatever else it is you're trying to achieve by trying to pass this fabrication off as the truth.

i've been lurking in this thread for the last few hours and i feel i need to weigh in (see what i did there). i doubt you're 5 stone. infact i'd bet against it. if you are you'd 1) not be on habbox 2) be in hospital 3) not want to parade around the internet disclosing your weight and height to people. i have family who have genuine eating disorders and it's upsetting to see people who want to draw attention to themselves regarding their weight, moreso if they're lying about it.

Coming from someone who has spent every year of his life struggling with bulimia since he was thirteen, I can say that you claiming to weigh five stone is not only offensive to us as a forum but also a stab at the community struggling with eating disorders on a daily basis. By pretending to be a weight you are not - which it is clear you are, sweetie - you are trying to get some sort of shock factor or glamorous feeling from all of the attention. You clearly enjoy arguing and pretending about it because you have been posting over and over with obvious trolls or lies - I can't tell which - for ages.
Let me share something. I am about 5'10" or 5'11" depending on who measures me. Let's say that I fall somewhere in the middle. At my lowest weight I was 7 stone. I couldn't function like a normal person. I was literally a victim of my eating disorder. It was only a couple of days before I was sent to an eating disorder inpatient treatment program. Nothing was comfortable - sleeping, standing, sitting - it all hurt my bones. I am no longer this weight now thanks to recovery programs but I will forever live with an osteoarthritis-type condition that makes my bones sickly because of the damage I did.
I will recap. Me, someone who has been struggling with bulimia nervosa for eight years. My lowest weight was 7 stone, two stone more than you weigh and enough to get me sent to the hospital without any prompting. The doctors insisted upon it and I was not let out for a very long time. You are two inches shorter than me, weigh two less stone and seemingly live a normal life? No, I call bigtime troll or lie on this one.
Just thought my input would be a bit eye-opening. Please don't act like being malnourished or underweight is something to be proud of. Eating disorders are, indeed, the most lethal of all psychological illnesses.

Saw your pictures at PAPOY and you don't look 5stone or 5''8. If you are, then tbh you should be dead by now. At first, you make yourself sound normal with 5stone and 5''8 but now, you're saying you're anorexic? The muscle size or bone size will definitely not affect that much. Oh and even if I'm not a doctor, that doesnt mean I'm an idiot who knows nothing about our body.
I agree with the above post also seeing the picture that bethie posted of the 5'6 girl thats 5 stone,
im certain you aren't 5stone and tbh I dnt even think you're 5'8, from your pics in papoy it looks nothing like it

I don't really know why a person needs to lie about their weight. Yeah it might be for self confidence or whatever, or for attention idk. Personally I am overweight, by quite a bit. For the last 2/3 yearsI'vebeen comfort eating or just eating to pass the time, but I don't want or need to lie about my weight because I'm happy with the way I am now. Yeah I could do with losing a bit of weight, and i've been going for walks and swims to combat it and I've lost a stone and a bit, its also built my muscles up. Another way is athletics, that is amazing for 'toning up'. For those who want to know, I'm about 6ft 1 and I weight about 14 stone (which is awful but yeah)
I've also seen how eating disorders affect people, and how horrid it is. I can't understand why a person would need to make up they had such things or to weigh in this case so little. It's a bit like people faking to have mental illnesses to get out of trouble or to gain attention, well lying in general is for attention seeking purposes mainly. Lying is a nasty little bugger, and it will only make you look silly and lose respect of your peers.
I tried to answer the thread in my little paragraph, I hope it makes sense and Ihaven't like made comments useless to the thread aha

I know my school used to have swimming competitions with other schools. I'm 5 foot tall and weigh just under 7 stone, I just scrape a 'normal' bmi so I don't see how anyone taller can weigh less than that. If they do then so be it but anyway this thread is ultimately about Ben so here's my input.
I don't think cutting down on eating is the only way to lose weight, yeah cutting down on snacking might help but at the end of the day most people will eat when they're hungry.
My sister goes to Slimming World with my mum every Wednesday, she isn't fat nor overweight but she wants to lose a few pounds, as she hasn't got a lot to lose (like you in some case) then it may take a while to come off but with persistence it will pay off.
A good way to have physical exercise whilst having fun and not doing too much damage would be console games such as wii fit, just dance things that get your whole body moving, it might seem silly but it does also burn calories that you've consumed off so there would be some difference (eventually).
I remember in my school we weren't allowed to do weights until year 10 meaning we were 14-15 years old, then again they weren't heavy therefore wouldn't have much effect in the long run.
However, as some others have suggested I would keep on with the swimming as it involves tonnes of muscles it will help increase stamina and such; other sports are good too though.

God quite an argument in this thread :P
[@]@-toxicflames[/@] as you've been told many times, can't understand how you are still alive with your supposed height and weight. Your BMI comes out to something like 11, and considering 18.5 is underweight...
And also to say that bone structure affects your BMI or weight to the extent that you thinkit does is ludicrous :P
Anyway I may as well post something constructive for Ben so here goes;
Just cut down on the crap and exercise more. Little things such as swimming a couple of times a week or cycling to school etc can make a big difference over time.
