Just wondering what people like to read on here.
I don't really read much, read all the Harry Potters when I was young. My favourite book at the moment would have to be Stephen King's the Shinning. I'm a horror fan and loved the horror with the added back story, the fact that even though the main character goes insane we do feel sorry for him knowing some of the stuff we know. This is partly why for me the film just didn't work, becauseJack Nicholson ended up portraying a very one dimensional insane person with no back story to bring anyempathyout.
I also have just finished the Bourne series - the first book being the best and an amazing book and nothing like the films - For example the mainantagonist, basically a terrorist named Carlos who appears in book 1 and 3 isn't in any of the films but I won't give too much away.
I am now reading a short collection of H.P Lovecraft's works and I am currently on what I believe is his most well known piecesThe Call of Cthulhu (which also is linked into his other works). Some of his stuff is okay but it's different to the stuff I usually read and wasn't expecting Lovecraft to be a racist (read online later a racist poem he wrote which is quite hardcore and shocking).
What are your favourite books?

i tend to re-read books i loved when i was 13/14 (i was seriously into reading back then). love the noughts&crosses series by malorie blackman, they are gripping and still touch me emotionally even at 21. enjoyed harry potter but feel like the films have ruined the books for me.
as an actor i like to read my way around varying periods of theatre, some of my favourite plays (i suppose they count as books even if they aren't prose) are taking care of baby by dennis kelly and cloud 9 by caryl churchill. the first being about a mother convincted of killing her two young children and then released to live with a newly found mental illness in a society that hates her and the latter is about social ideologies of gender and sexuality. i guess i mostly enjoy reading controversial and "shocking" plays: my favourite playwright is sarah kane.
er yeah that's about it for me and books. i try and read as much as i can as i do enjoy it.

I don't tend to have any favourite books but I do read a lot. I am notorious for buying five or ten books at a time on the iTunes iBook store and reading them before I sleep and when I have nothing to do during the day. I pick different genres but the ones that captivate me most are the ones that centre around tragedy. I am also very partial to non-fiction and like reading encyclopedic books and a even a bit of traditional philosophy. I find that some of the best fiction stories I have ever read, though, are ones I just bought on a whim and never thought about until that one day when I had nothing to do but read. The last book I read was «Secret Diary Of A Call Girl».

oh i've read secret diary and it's very very very good and i've got another one i think it's called confessions of a manhatten call girl and that's very good too, dunno if it's just my taste but you can't beat a bit of literotica hahahahahha.
I have no time for reading books now. But i used to read the Shopaholic Series by Sophie Kinsella. I adored the movie so i just bought the Shopaholic series which has six books. I also bought a few other books written by Sophie Kinsella. The same goes to the Harry Potter series. :)

Are they the books where society has been flipped, blacks rule and whites are the slaves? Never read it but the concept sound like the kind of thing I'd like.

This brings another interesting question. How many people prefer digital reading as apposed to actual reading e.g paperback/hardback books - I'm a technology geek and love my computer and smart phone and while I read a lot of posts, blog stuff and news articles I just don't see a device replacing an actual book itself for me when it comes to reading a novel - there's something good, something real about actually turning the page.
The Hunger Games!!!!!!!!!
Yeah, I've only just got back into reading and I'm in love with these!
That reminds me I have also read Battle Royale, well the English adaptation and bought a couple of the manga's although I'm not into the animie scene really.

The hunger games - All the way! If you haven't read them then I seriously recommend it!
Are they the books where society has been flipped, blacks rule and whites are the slaves? Never read it but the concept sound like the kind of thing I'd like.
yesss not slaves as such, but the crosses (black/asian etc) are the upper class and the noughts (whites) have only just been giving an equal status, even though it's not really. and the lead character sephy is the daughter of the primeminister (a cross) who falls in love with a nought and it changes her life completely. they're really good books. they're quite shocking though, a lot of terrorism and there's sex and violence and murder, but they are really really really good.
the first book sounds really soppy and romantic but it's not like that at all, definitely unisex books. i'd like to think they shaped me as a teenager. there's 3 (maybe 4...) of the books the first is sephy as a child, the second is her as a young adult, the third is a joint novel between sephy and her daughter and the 4th is the daughters tale.
i would definitely recommend them. you honestly can't put them down.

Harry Potter although I was a bit of a late bloomer to it and didn't bother reading it cos the first book they gave me was the 4th and the first chapter was boring and made no sense to me. wasn't until i got the 2nd book that i started to love it. i read the 2nd before the 1st, oh well. :D
Before Harry Potter it was Roald Dahlthough. Used to be obsessed with his books!

When I was 12/13 i absolutely loved Jacqueline Wilson, Tracy Beaker was my fave haha.
My favourite book series at the moment would be The Mortal Intruments, The Infernal Devices and The Hunger Games :)
I read all the Harry Potter books after most of the films so I couldn't really form my own characters which kind of ruined it for me :(

So true, Bethie! It is guilty but very pleasurable reading.

I really think that eReading is just as good as turning a paper book if not moreso. You never damage the copy, you can instantly get definitions of words you don't understand just by highlighting them (useful for me since I am French), bookmarking a page and highlighting important passages is easy and removable should you so choose, you can read in the dark since it is backlit, you don't have to go to the shop to get a book because millions are available with a tap of your finger whenever you get the urge to read and you can bring as many books as you want with you anywhere without actually lugging a packsack full of paperbacks around with you like a silly.
That being said, there is so much nostalgia in libraries, book shops and real physical books than can never be replaced by anything electronic. I can totally understand why people would want to stick to books they can feel and hold in their hands.

Sounds not bad. As long as its nothing like Twilight. I avoided mentioning my issues with that franchise to avoid being shouted at ha

Back spin by Harlan Coben. Brilliant book, never liked Harry Potter because of the dull plots.
We all knew Harry wasn't gonna die properly before the book was even written.
Harry Potter Series because I have been reading them since 1998 and have grown up with them.
I love Toni Morrison, especially the bluest eye :)
I've not read many good books to be honest with you. The books that I have read tend to be autobiographies or biographies of famous people. I think the most recent one that I've read and really enjoyed is Of Mice and Men. It's something which I had to study in GCSE Literature and it certainly got me interested for the majority of the lessons which we had reading the book.
I think I need to start reading some more. It's something which I so enjoy when I have the chance. :)

Invisible Man By Ralph Ellison is my favorite book..The novel addresses many of the social and intellectual issues facing African-Americans in the early twentieth century, including black nationalism, the relationship between black identity and Marx....

I'm not a big reader, I have to really get into a book to fully enjoy it and be able to read it all. However I once read a book called Don't Ever Tell which was about a catholic Irish girl who was really badly abused as a child, she then got sent to various catholic institutions where the nuns would abuse her and the priests would rape her (on multiple occasions).
Honestly, it was so graphic and went into so much detail it was difficult to read at times because it's a true story. In the end she became pregnant at a really young age and I'm sure she was forced to put the baby up for adoption I can't remember, either way it was so sad. She eventually ended up in a mental hospital where she would get electric shock treatment and other various 'treatments'.
She was saying at the end how she'll never be okay with what happend to her and she will never be the same, her childhood and most of her teenage years was stolen by those who she'd entrusted to keep her safe. I've never cried so much over a book in my entire life!
If you're interested in it though it's called "Don't Ever Tell" it's a really good read :D

What book did you enjoy the most?
I love to read and when the movie version comes out I'll be the first one in the cinema line waiting to go see it. I love Harry Potter and Twilight, but the book that I enjoyed the most was probably Lord of the Flies, by William Golding.
