When I go into town, there's always beggars on the street asking for money. I sometimes will give money to some people that play good music but I don't give to beggars personally.

Not at all. You can call me heartless but I barely have enough for myself.
Nope, the only time I give my money is when they play an instrument or something. has to be something entertaining in my books lol. I'd rather give it to a charity of my choice.

nope, don't really trust them. to be quite honest, i think a lot of them are just faking it...

It's not really beneficial to help them anyway, they're more than likely going to end up spending it on cigarettes or alcohol.

You're getting beggars confused with buskers.

Yes aha. I feel really guilty and just crumble and usually give buskers/beggars most of my money :L

I used to when I was younger because I felt bad for them but when I thought about what they were probably spending it on I stopped. Would rather give money straight to charity.
I don't really give them anything, they're more likely to spend it on something like drugs then something good.

I used to be part of a group that brought hot meals to the homeless around the city centre of Paris during the winter months. I can't recall ever giving money to any of them but I do know that I have given money to a deaf and mute person who gave me a little card explaining their situation. She was sweet. I hope she is doing well!

no, charity begins at home & they probably have or get more money than myself (you'd be amazed at how much they actually earn)

In this country we have a generous (some would say too generous) welfare system which means that unless of a rare tecnocratic mix-up, there is no reason for anybody to be begging to eat, drink or sleep somewhere safely .. unless of course they are spending it all on drink and drugs. But i'll let you make your minds up on that one, ahem.
Yeah if they played music or handicapped.

We have a saxophone player in our town centre now... He only knows one song which is Careless Whipser by George Michael? But he can't even play that well, if he learnt Baker street by Gerry Rafferty then maybe I'd consider giving him something. On the whole I don't give to any beggars as I don't know what they're going to spend it on and I really hate the ones that walk up to you and harass you for money.

In spain once there was this woman without any legs who was sitting on the path begging and stuff
So I held 10 euros above her and told her she could have it if she could reach it

I give them spare change but I hate doing that because for all we know they could be spending it on drugs or something.
If I see a homeless person I sometimes buy them a coffee or something if we're near a McDonalds. At least you know they're making good use of it.

stephen...
emmm not really. sometimes if i buy something to eat and don't like it i'll give it to them (i never bite my food i always pick pieces off to eat so its not like my germs are all over it). & a lot of the time when im out and go to mcdonalds ill buy an extra if there's a beggar outside. we have charity boxes for homeless people and we're told to put money there instead of giving directly to them. its the junkies at the bus stop that annoy me, "have you got change for a cup of coffee?" "have you got change for the telephone box?". no way. i dunno why im such an easy target, offended. there's a woman outside our shopping centre that plays a guitar with one string using a plastic fork. LOADS of people give her money and take pictures with her lol we have a fbook page for her ; https://www.facebook.com/pages/Guitar-Wifie-outside-the-St-Nicholas-Centre-for-X-Factor/163038230440261

Not really. I think a lot of them try and make it seem worse than it actually is. When I was in Manchester at the end of last year this guy came up to me and my friend and said about how it was Christmas as if we didn't already know and asked if we had any money we could spare and he held open his hands to show apparently the only coins he had. His hands were absolutely filthy, though. He had clearly gone and rubbed them in dirt or something, because there's just no need for anyone to have hands that filthy, especially in Manchester where it always rains. He caught us when we weren't really going anywhere though and I hate to say no and then run away, so I was all like I'll check... although I didn't really have anything so I told him I only had coins then he was like "Ugh. Haven't you got any notes." What happened to wanting *any* money? After that my friend just pulled me away and we escaped. That's the end of the story.

No and I never will. I have to be tight with my own money in order to live. Call me heartless but ya know.

I've only seen one or two in my life where I live probably just because I'm not in or near a major city. But if I did see them I wouldn't give them any money :S Can't they go and attempt to find a job. I know there was a guy who played the violin or something and he died like last year and everyone was upset because we all use to see him when we went out.

I only saw four one night in leeds, and I got scared because I was only with my friend so we ran away. :P
If I see one again, I still probably wouldn't give them my money.
I don't think I've ever give money to any of them, it'll probs be a waste like others have said. :O
I seen a big issue guy in proper trampy clothes yesterday in Liverpool but he was wearing a brand new sparkling set of PTs. For that I choose not to donate - generally I will to the people who build the sand dog things theyre good :P

Only if I'm in an diff country because they are epic beggers :P
There are a few local beggars in my area and you sort of know who to give the money to. There's this one fairly elderly woman who is an alcoholic who is actually very well educated. She is very grateful when you give her the smallest bit of change and once she gave me her life story. She trained 3 times to become a librarian but her dad kept dragging her out of her placements to go and marry in Ireland but she kept running away and got into bad relationships :( He essentially pimped her out so she escaped but yeah why she's turned to alcohol. She is a genuinely lovely person, and obviously it would be fabulous for her to get some help but you know, if she chooses to live her life that way then ok, I can spare the odd 50p, and whether she spends it on beans or alcohol doesn't affect me.
On the other hand, there's this crack addict who also lives in my area and I will never ever give her any money because she's completely out of her mind and I don't want to put money into her pimp and dealers hand.
Oh and as a rule I never give money to people who sit by cash machines.

Cash machine people piss me off a lot, I don't have any change hence why I am at the machine usually and no I'm not going to give you this note because it is my money. There are quite a few in Brighton and just today me and a mate got stopped twice in about 30 seconds by the same guy asking for money didn't understand if he was so off his face that he thought we were different people or just trying to annoy us. There is this one guy who has a dog and lives outside a church and he is a safe man.

no because they don't take card~
Buskers - If they are good.
Beggars - If they have a dog.
:)
i think so many people are so judgemental in this thread, NA I DNT CAUSE THEY R GNA BUY DRUGZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111ONEOEN
as much as i love a good generalisation not every person living on the streets is smacked off their face on crack, i don't give money in the street (mainly because i don't have the money to give) but i do have like £5 a month that goes to Shelter who are the UK's leading homelessness charity.
i did some charity work for a homelessness charity local to me in 2007 which involved sleeping rough in a box for a weekend and it was so horrible, but i'm so glad i did it because i feel i understand the problem a lot better.

I never use to give money to beggars but then I saw this film I can't remember what it was called but it was like a horror film about a girl being trapped in the London Underground over night and there's this beast trying to kill her or something but yeah that kinda changed my mind because it challenged what you thought of beggars at the end
In terms of buskers I only really ever give money to them if they're good... which is rare tbh
