View Full Version : charity shops.
(inspired thread by GoldenMerc well done on being useful for once ross)
do you shop at charity shops? if not, why not?
i find that charity shops still have a massive stigma attached to them, but i absolutely love them. for example today in one of the more "boutique" oxfam stores i found a cardigan that i've been looking for for many many years. it's knitted and embroided with the cutest flowers and it was 99p BUT ANYWAY.
i think there's so much quality in these shops, especially jewellery, i'm terribly poor so i can't afford it hahaha but there's some really nice old silver around.

I haven't bought anything from a charity shop for a long time. I know my mum loves to go to them though, she always manages to find a bargain. :P

i know what you mean. my Nan goes in them all the time and I have found some very vintage style cardi's and shoes that I love. I just make sure I wash them before I wear them. I don't get people who get all freaked out by them. And I also find some amazing DVD's and CD's in there that are like 99p too. Not very often I do go in them, but when I do it's mainly for books. I've got about 400 books and atleast 30% of them are from charity shops.

i think my mom is the person who gave me the passion for charity shops, she's a teacher so she has to dress smart and i live just outside of a very posh part of birmingham and she began finding all these designer suits and dresses in the charity shops in this posh part of brum. it's seriously a bargain treasure chest.

totally agree. my mum bought like this china set thing and one day decided to sell it and she made about £70 for it, and paid like £3.99 :l insane.
i dont buy clothes from charity shops, unless for like fancy dress something that im never gonna wear again and can be cut up and torn etc. i buy other things from shops tho, dvds etc.

I have done in the past and picked up a few vintage fred perry polo tops.
i think the buying clothes focuses very much on the style of clothing you wear.
because i am a totes hipsta *+*+* i shop at vintage shops in town anyway which are basically overpriced pretentious charity shops so cutting out the middle man :)

they smell like old people
they smell like old people
you have crap charity shops down south the ones in canterbury are so badly managed and run, they are the kind of charity shops that give charity shops the reputation of being mingin.

I find Oxfam to be the most "expensive" charity shop but even then, it's still half the price of some shops. And a lot of the old cardi's I've stumbled across have had the original tags on and stuff. Not very often I do buy clothing but there's the odd time I'll find something I love.

I remember there are 2 charity shops in the town near me. Prince of Wales and Cancer Research. We go in Prince of Wales, see this nice top don't buy it, but then go to the one across road, has the exact same top so me and my sister end up buying both for one each. Was cool ok.
I bought Roller Coaster Tycoon 1 in a charity shop, also buy cheap magazines and jigsaws then take em back. My sister got her prom dress from one too.
I love when charity shops have tombolas too like Barnados always has one, I always tend to win :D!
I don't really go in charity shops much since my Nan died cos I used to go shopping with her so we used to go in them.

can't say i've ever been in one. i think it's the stereotypical side of charity shops that puts people off shopping in there. :)

i go in them sometimes with my gran, usually to have a look at books and stuff cause you can find some really good books/dvds for decent prices. most of the clothes in my local ones don't really appeal to me though.
the charity shops round my area are quite over priced :( sometimes there are some gems but they're very good at knowing what will sell so put the prices up way high
like 8 quid for a top

I know they are very fashionable and trendy - or they were for quite some time with the whole 'vintage chic' thing - but, sadly, I can't say I have ever gone in one! As Tom said, menswear is rarely found in the charity shops and even if you do find some it is often not something you would wear. I am glad, though, that so many of you have found great deals in them. That is fantastic especially if you are on a budget! I think they are great places.

I find them rather useful!
I've found a bundle of stuff from the shops themselves, really handy because it's cheap and most of the stuff they sell is in good condition!

My dad used to work in one to claim his doll money lol but I've never bought clothes from one, my mum has incredibly sensitive skin so she won't wash any clothes that I haven't bought brand new, since the same washing machine is used for my clothes too

They have seriously sucky charity shops over here, contain nothing of interest or if you actually find something decent its like same price as the store I normally shop in with its sales :/ Did find some really nice jeans once but haven't been lucky apart from that
this thread has made me go to charity shops like CONSTANTLY aha
I've got a nice floral skirt and a sheer white long tank top and a nice bracelet for less than a tenner yay

wheyyyy i love a good charity shop. thing is there is a shop in town called cow vintage which is basically a charity shop with hiked prices but the stuff IS nice. so idk whether to go search and pay less or pay more where everything i want is already there.

I occasionally pop into charity shops (theres a lot around here), have found some pretty weird bargains in the past haha. My mum likes them more than me though and I'm always tryna get her out of them when we're shopping because a lot of the time its the same stuff in them haha.

I used to go in charity shops but for the past 4-5ish years I've refused and wouldn't be seen dead in one. I'd be so embarassed if someone I knew ever saw me in one but I don't even go in them when I'm on holiday anymore.

I decided to go charity shopping today while I was in town. I brought two jumpers and a cardigan all coming to just under a tenner... bargainnnn. I was really gutted though as I found this really nice dark green jumper but it wasn't in my size :(

I like charity shops (: Nothing wrong with them. I like getting books from them. Better then buying from waterstones ect..
We always give stuff to the charity shops but never buy there. I just feel weird wearing clothing knowing that it used to belong to someone else.

Never bought any clothes from a charity shop before, I'm sure you can get some good stuff but I wouldn't really think "oh lets go in oxfam" whilst I'm shopping down the high street. I've bought other things from charity shops before though when I was younger, books and toys etc.

I think i've become quite obsessed with charity shops. I brought a shirt the other day from one and cut the sleeves off. Doesn't look that bad.
I haven't been in one in a while (The ones round me are crap) But I love them, find cheap books what aren't even that old, the odd polo shirt or 2 is always nice :).
