Hiya,

This has something that has been bugging me for quite a while, so I've now decided to post a feedback thread about it. I'm just writing with a small complaint, which may not be small, so let's just say complaint :P. Basically, I was browsing around Habbox Wiki earlier, but what I found on some pages was really quite shocking.

I'll give one such example of what I mean, http://habboxwiki.com/wiki/News_Reporters. This page has been up for months, yet is riddled with so many grammatical and spelling errors. Now, I understand that the public can edit the Wiki pages and improve upon them, but the errors here are just so extremely bad and unprofessional, that I do not understand why such pages are allowed to be up for so long without anyone noticing. I think the content team, just like the news team should have a good or at least decent standard of spelling and grammar and seniors should be more there when picking up mistakes.

Now there are few such similar pages (if you want more examples, I'll paste them in here), which I feel just are simply below standard. I think that for the Wiki to succeed, you need to adhere to at least some level of professionalism and not allow such pages to go live, then stay live for such a prolonged period of time.

Sorry to moan, but I felt this should just be posted!

I like how the person who wrote it clearly do not know what News Reporters do, I like how they say that we usually use our own words, it is our duty to produce our news reports using all our own words with quotes sometimes from Habbo or other sources. It's also not just Habbo based and a lot of information could go in that, I would change it but I doubt it would work on IE.

They've even deleted the page I did when I was staff so I guess I won't bother when my page was fine (and got changed everything bar the picture I used) so.

The pets page could be improved imo as I feel whoever did it has overused commas too much in incorrect places, however I do think it's informative.

I like how some pages are being updated a lot though like the Fansite page, I remember doing some of that page but it looks better than it did when I was writing.

They're just a few pages I remember though, some could be updated with more grammar etc. though but I like the Wiki regardless.

Thanks for posting this - it's better saying it and us changing it than the alternative of it going unsaid. Bethie, feel free to contact Zuth who may be able to facilitate your knowledge in this area. Maybe given your position you may want to do the page yourself or the news department and content management could maybe work together to produce the best possible outcome rather than us content designers having to do it.

If you do notice any errors you can edit it yourself to change them remember - and I understand that is not the answer your looking for in the long term and I'm sure Zuth will remind us to take extra care and to spell check :)

^^It's not only the news page though. I was using it as an example. I can easily go find spelling and grammatical errors on other pages. Or they aren't entirely valid or complete. Obviously the public can add to it, but I am sure no one would want to add anything to a page that is that badly written in the first place. It should have some foundations such as decent information, grammar and spelling. Otherwise the whole Wiki project might as well go down the drain!

Also, Samanfa is not called 'Bethie' lool.

I agree with you Grig. The content department right now is confusing me anyway; but that's another issue. Some content designers aren't in charge of the Wiki (which is weird) so this can't be placed on every single content staff member. The spelling, I agree, must improve soon and fast! Seniors, as said, should obviously check around all the pages and actually make sure what is there is right (so, check with managers and check spellings). Can the seniors even spell themselves?

There are SO many dictionaries out there, find one and check if you're not sure.

There is a few frequent visitors (more than actual content staff) so I would imagine so...

We are still currently updating pages/creating them but I must say this is shocking. We are currently re-doing Habbox.com & backed off from the Wiki a little, as you may know the Habbox.com site has department pages on too and when they have been re-done I'm planning on adding the same content to the wiki for users to edit. Another thing I'd just like to say is that the wiki is a huge task to manage with so little staff, so its kinda hard finding errors like these so its down to people like you who spot them and then either report them or fix them yourselves so thanks :)

What page got deleted? & what I said above, the wiki is a huge task and its hard to pick up everything :P

We were under alot of pressure to get the wiki out real fast and at some points I only had 3 staff so I apologise for the mistakes and I'll get someone to fix them soon :)

Whats so confusing? I dont get why you say some content designers are not in charge of the wiki? You can choose if you wona work on the wiki, main site or both? And spelling will be picked up on.

Considering that the wiki gets about the same page views per visit as HabboxForum I assume so.

It's not very clear that you can do that. To me, when I first returned, it was you're either here or there (or that's what I thought).

I am sorry, but I understand if it's a few minor errors here and there, but not when some of the errors are this bad. That is a responsibility of you and the staff you pick who do the Wiki pages.

If you indeed say Wiki is that popular in terms of the hits, maybe get another senior to solely focus on going around the site and finding errors. The error I speak of has gone unnoticed for months. If you're hiring staff to do a wiki, then the wiki needs to never shift to the back-burner of something else, as I understand you should prioritize it equally with site content.

Nope, you can work in both, if you looked then you can see names are in 2 sections not just one :)

Sorry I didnt see this post as I posted the same time as you :P But yeah, now you've said that I totally agree, I'm sure I'll sort something for everyone to do during the easter holidays :) & For the senior, watch this space :) Also, some of the wiki staff have decided to do some of the Habbox.com work too so the wiki is about 49/51 compared to Habbox.com at the moment.

I actually created a huge guide to grammar when I joined the Content Department a few weeks ago. Sadly, nobody really took note! :P

This is more of a navigational problem. Unfortunately due to the way random page searching works and the current state of navigation on the wiki (Something I am working extremely hard to fix) it is very difficult to come across new pages to edit. Unfortunately as it stands finding pages edited a long time ago is impossible.

Now there are few such similar pages (if you want more examples, I'll paste them in here),
If you have a list then please PM me the list so I can take a look at fixing the pages.

Zuth I checked that earlier unless a part of the url was wrong or it was this stupid laptop :P.

However, the grammar and punctuation on that is now rather bad.

Ellz I would but I'm away and only have IE that's why I can't I think many summed it up that you can add/edit yourself too but the thing is why is it like that in the first place?

Ellz
22-03-2012, 07:57 PM
@[@]Samanfa[/@] Okay fair enough and i know it shouldnt be like that in the first place but its not my call to make any decisions and judgements about that becuase i am a content designer who works on the wiki and can say myself that i do check my wording etc.

Ellz oh dw wasn't pin pointing anyone, I remember being in content and after you publish a page no senior team approve it do they? Maybe that could be trialed or something; I checked my work too after completing it so to say mine got changed into an over use of commas then it's not really good. However, whoever did it made it more indepth though so wd to them :P.

I cant remember, did you join before the wiki was released? If yes then it was hard to check what changes you'd made, now with the approval system we can every change made is highlighted in red, a lot easier to check.

I haven't read this whole thread but rather just the first page as I am a bit rushed for time but I do want to comment! I have visited HxW many times over the period since it was released until now. I have always been very dissatisfied with the standard of language being used on the project. There are comma splices, misspellings, sentence fragments and poor word choices.

Having said that, it is a project for the benefit of the community. No one is being paid to do it, no one is making money off of it and no one is reaping rewards from it. Well, no rewards except for the free knowledge! Because of this, I overlook the errors I see. There are some really hard workers who have put hours in to this and they truly are role models for everyone else. Thank you to everyone who has put their free time in to this.
