So many people think emo means emotional, its not :p It means Emotive hardcore. Some guy on habbo, started like calling me "emo" and i was like "do you even know what emo means?" and he was like "DUH, emotional" and so i asked some other people what they think, and they all say emotional -.- I have the dictonary meanings =]
What it doesnt mean:
Genre of softcore punk music that integrates unenthusiastic melodramatic 17 year olds who dont smile, high pitched overwrought lyrics and inaudible guitar rifts with tight wool sweaters, tighter jeans, itchy scarfs (even in the summer), ripped chucks with favorite bands signature, black square rimmed glasses, and ebony greasy unwashed hair that is required to cover at least 3/5 ths of the face at an angle.

What it MEANS:
emo:-;; emotive hardcore / a type of singing,loud,harsh.

What a dam well stupid description?

I would call myself half emo due to the fact i dont like tight jeans...
I think if you want to be an emo you dont have to look like teh 'typical image'. Alot of people now use sterotypes.
Yeah alot of emos have long hair (they tend to put their fringe over to one side) and yeah well the jeans are true. I think they kinda look stupid with light jeans, my m8 boyfriend buys womens jeans cause mens jeans aint tight enough :s
An teh glasses thing, thats a description of 'nerd glasses' which are very in at teh moment... there very bold black even big sunglasses (aviators) are in.

Well not really an emo is someone that listens to a certain type of music...
There alot of groups its like calling someone a 'mosher', i hate that word cause its a sterotype kind of work :s

Mosh..Er - is this saying that the person 'moshs' in like a mosh pit... i never understood to be honest... which brings uncle oggy to sterotypes... who came up with the name 'chav' its a pretty random thing to call like a chav its an odd word really lol

Yaaaaah, those are great reasons to slit your wrists. You guys haven't even hit 18, how can your life be roooooooobish? I was beat on and thrown down stairs and pulled back up by hair most of my childhood until I was kicked out of my house at 16. I was homeless for a year and a half but you didn't see me slitting. Bad things happen, life goes on. And seriously, the only reason to slit your wrists is for attention cause do you know how hard it is to actually kill yourself doing it? So find a better means of getting attention if you think that's your last resort.

Please for the sake of humanity or me at least, get out of this stupid fad. Realize that the music is **** and that you don't have to wear the same mandatory "suit" that everyone around you is wearing. Seriously, just be yourself.

And as for the eyeliner... eh, it didn't look that great on me. But dresses do. :P

Your right, but it does mean emotive hardcore, but i'm still thinking it means emotional too, because honestly.. it is all those bands whining about how their life s*cks IM NOOOTTTT OOOKAYYY.. yeh wahetevr p*ss off.

As for wrist slitters, well alot of people think that slitting your wrists gives you an instant backstage pass as the emo/goth subcultures, they are posers (though i do agree there are some real self haters our there that need the help).

Emo has been around for a while, however its only in recent years it has become slightly mainstream. You will find alot of emo's are emo's because they think they are different and not maintstream, ok, very well, they are right. They arent mainstream, but they are following a trend.. they dont really have any grounds to stand on when they shout out there individual 24/7. Alot of goths are like this too (im not gonna downrate my own subculture though), but thats because there is no universal definition of Goth, due to there being more poser Goths than there is real ones, same applying to Emo.

But since this is in a music subforum, im going to say your subculture (if you have one) is totally down to the music you listen to.

Neither is Gwen Stefani, Or anybody, there are no real EMO bands anymore, and if EMO we're emotional, just because They complain wont make them emotional, it makes them the same as everyone else in this world, someone who thinks complaining is so cool and will make people cry, just to give them good ratings. -.-

Um, well, emo's are calling thereself emo just because how they dress and what they listen to, if your an Emo person then you wouldnt be dressing like some idiot, or listening to these random bands, and yes, most people are posers, there are no TRUE emo people in this world that i know of, and if people start thinking that Simple plan and like Gwen Stefani are emo, that could ruin everything. Not to mention give emo a bad look, Gwen Stefani is Pop. So is Simple Plan and Good Charlotte.

eh... I come and go. Two weeks ago every five minutes of an hour I was looking at the gun cabinet. The rest of the time I was looking for something to distract myself so I wouldn't take that road. Not because I couldn't take it anymore, I learned how to survive over the years, but because I feel I know what's ahead and I don't like it. Everyone gets down from time to time, some people don't come back up. There's been months straight where I won't lift my head and there's not a thing any friend can say to make me look up. But when the day is done I know people would be hurt by my decisions and I feel too much empathy for them to make that kind of a decision. And when I'm in one of my moods I try to find something that I enjoy in life to get me by to the next day. Cause you never know where the day will take you, and you never know what will come tomorrow.

That's just my adivice take it as you will. I'm not gonna be a hipocrate and tell you not to cause something could happen five minutes from now and I'll start looking at the gun cabinet again. Just find something you enjoy in life. I enjoy my guitar, and I enjoy my alcohol. Those are the things that get me by each day.

Murderdolls do the song Slit My Wrists, idiots, but its a catchy song without acknowledging the lyrics.
Alot of self harmers nowadays kid themselves into thinking their depressed when they arent, its a good way of getting sympathy and attention, even if their life is tough it could most definetly be worse. **im not saying all of them are like that** anyway.. this thread is drifting away from the music side of things.

Emo: An abbreviation for loser. Emo is the new goth, except goths are still around, so it's becoming almost unbearable.
Heh.
Emo music is terrible. It used to be alright, now it's turned into a cult and has to contain random screaming and annoying lyrics, usually containing self harm or a lost love.

I wouldnt have a problem with emo's if they didnt go round yelling their heads off that their individual, because they arent, hair is all the same, covering the face, all wearing converse, all listening to exactly the same music, all in black, they are just another crowd. I don't mean to offend anyone, but of what I see its true, they may have a non-maintstream style and its not uncool, but individual it isnt.

I think the whole scarey gothic look is weird, I mean why not just wear ordinary clothes, it doesn't mean your not individual, individuality comes from the inside.
The only grunger/emo/goth, WHATEVER, guy that I think is good looking, is that lead singer out of green day, I don't know his name, but he would be okay...if he didn't wear eyeliner.

No, ordinary clothes are ordinary clothes, you know what I mean. =/

Being individual to some people means expressing themselves clothes wise, individuality can be shown by wearing unusual clothing, sure it can, and the gothic fashion is undeniably unusual, and certainly not ordinary.

To be honest, I think a personality makes you more individual than material and make-up.

Of course people like expressing themselves differently, and I accept them, I just think it's a little strange.

Yeh I guess you can be an emo just by listening to the music and nothing more.. but im not so sure, are stereotypes not a way of life as well? Though the music is the most important aspect. Emmzeh, I know not all emo's wear black, but from what i see they do, see them in town alot, all looking the same. I really dont understand the obsession with gerard either.

All the emo's in my area have to have these essentials: (Well im guessing)

1. Black trousers
2. Black gelled long fringe pushed to the side
3. Red or black tie (like w.t.f?)
4. Big chunky black glasses

Sorry about the stereotype, but that's my observation. I don't understand how music makes you dress in a certain way? Aren't clothes just clothes?

Music influences how people dress, i think its because they see what the band/singer wears and maybe copy it, like hard metal/hardcore bands wear gothic clothes and get the audience...
Plus its just evry1 views on fashion, i think people who wear burberry (chavs) think they good cause tehre wearing 'designer'.

I agree. I don't care what people chose to do with themselves, I will speak to anyone, hell, I'll even speak to chavs if they're alright guys/ girls. The whole emo thing is getting boring and pathetic now though, just like goths did.

The "emo" haircut's actually been around a while, just it's become trademark to emo's to have it now. I think it looks good anyway.

Music doesn't always have an influence on how you dress. Iron Maiden is one of my favourite bands, doesn't mean I dress anything like them or their hardcore fans.

I think some of the criticism for emo's here is fuelled by jealousy anyway.

True but some artists use emotions to write songs... its pathetic if they sing about normal breakups but if its betrayal, death or joy the songs tend to turn out better than songs about nothing. Alot of artists have stories behind there songs...

Green Day - Wake Me Up When September Ends, was about the death of Billy Joe's dad (thats not emo dnt get me wrong)

like my fathers come to pass
seven years has gone so fast
wake me up when september ends

(abit later in song)

as my memory rests
but never forgets what I lost
wake me up when september ends

InMe - Alt Rock
The Glitterati - Just Rock
Queen - used to be known as 'glamour rock'
and the list goes on an on.

I appreciate rock music and by listening to loads of different things instead of listenin 2 one specific catagory i'm giving some artists a chance. I would have never listened to InMe if my m8 hadnt forced them upon me and now i going to see them in gig in 13 DAYS!!!!! wooooo! 24th ;)

Many dress like emo cause they want to and you when people complain that 'its just a phase' what does it care to them, ppl can dress however they want to dress... the typical emo hair is 'greesy black' (that what people say anyway) but in my books i see many emos with perefctly clean long black hair... long hair is massively in at the moment... i would know cause i just grown my hair.

okay wow.. you don't know much about 'labels' and 'stereotypes' do you? :|

emo IS a genre of music, yes. but emo is also a label.

Goths = Gothic Metal, other hardcore stuff.
Preps = hip hop, rnb, boy bands, etc.
Gangstas = Rap
Rockers = Rock
Punks = Punk
Skaters = Ska - or - Punk

everyone is entitled to their opinion.. but given you don't seem to know that much on the topic you're so quickly defending, I'd do some research, or get to know some people who listen to (and actually enjoy) emo music.

most people who like emo music like being friends with people who enjoy the same music as them. emo's are usually writers because emo music is so based around lyrics. just as rockers usually play an instrument because most rock is based around the music more than the lyrics. gangsta's usually enjoy rap because they themselves are rappers. punks usually enjoy punk music because it expresses the feelings they have towards certain things. (e.g. erm.. the song title is inappropriate so I'll change it around so you get the drift.. 'fluck' emo by a band called cheap sex)

I am not trying to argue with you, just so you know.

uhm.. get out more? goths don't just have to listen to one genre of music to be goths. and 'a total gangsta with his dumb attitude and tatty music taste'? you shouldn't judge people like that. and most gangsta's do dress in black, just so you're aware.. here goth is kind of like a religion. most goths here believe in satanism. put some emphasis on the here's so you don't get the impression I'm talking about everywhere else in the world, like you are.

Goth's just pretend to believe in Satanism here in the UK, they probably don't even know what it is. And Joey, just admit you're wrong, what you listen to doesn't change a thing really. If you choose to dress like a goth, and hang around with goths, it's most likely you are a goth, whether you listen to 50 cent or [Insert goth band name here].

It doesnt matter if its called "Emotional" or "Emotive Hardcore". It could be called "The greatest music genre ever" and its still the same type of music. It still holds simple plan, good charlette, HH ect. Whichever you call it, it doesnt make the music any different at all

No, now you listen to me, if goths pretend they follow satanism, then what makes you not think they are not pretending to be following goth? Its not just the way you dress, isnt there more to a person than appearance. I'll answer that for you, YES.
I'm fairly sure the 'goth' people you describe in your area are posers that don't even know what satanism means, and to clear one thing up, satanism is hardly connected to the Devil (which i undoubtly expect them to argue).

Jesus, listen to what you like. Genres are just there for guidence and organization through music, not to label every band. It shouldnt matter what its called, if you like it, you like it. If RHCP was genred as "Happy hippo dancing music", I would still listen to them. It shouldnt make a difference. Who cares what emo means? Who cares what goth is? Its music, listen to it

okay wow.. you don't know much about 'labels' and 'stereotypes' do you? :|

emo IS a genre of music, yes. but emo is also a label.

Goths = Gothic Metal, other hardcore stuff.
Preps = hip hop, rnb, boy bands, etc.
Gangstas = Rap
Rockers = Rock
Punks = Punk
Skaters = Ska - or - Punk

everyone is entitled to their opinion.. but given you don't seem to know that much on the topic you're so quickly defending, I'd do some research, or get to know some people who listen to (and actually enjoy) emo music.

most people who like emo music like being friends with people who enjoy the same music as them. emo's are usually writers because emo music is so based around lyrics. just as rockers usually play an instrument because most rock is based around the music more than the lyrics. gangsta's usually enjoy rap because they themselves are rappers. punks usually enjoy punk music because it expresses the feelings they have towards certain things. (e.g. erm.. the song title is inappropriate so I'll change it around so you get the drift.. 'fluck' emo by a band called cheap ***)

I am not trying to argue with you, just so you know.

Ok so first, yes i do. Second, i didnt read the post ahead of me sorry. And kinda last, yeh i DO know people who listen are labled, my sister is one of them, so is her boy friend greg, WHICH i can send you pictures if you want. :\ And i agree with the last paragraph, thats right. The amount of times I've been kicked out of rooms/shouted at because I disagreed with pretty much everyone in public rooms that "OMGZZZZ LYK GREENDAY IS SO PUNK LYK OMGGZZ EMO" .. but hey, that's my opinion right?

You missunderstood my point. The bands in the category "Emo" wont change wether its "hardcore" or "emotional". If someone finds out jimmy eat world isnt "emotional", but rather "Emotive hardcore", does that mean the person wont listen to it anymore now that its called "hardcore". If you ever listen to a song, think its good, look it up and it turns out its labled emo, and you all of a sudden dont like it, you are pathetic. My point wasent argueing the actuall definition of "Emotional" or "Emotive" but rather it doesnt change the music that is already under "Emo". If you dont listen to a band that deep down you like inside, just because of what it is labled, check yourself into a mental institution.

We shouldnt be argueing this at all. Why are we? I dont know where the term "Rock n' Roll" directly came from, but that doesnt mean I dont know what it is, or that I dont like it. Where did the name "rap" come from? Who cares? Its music you idiots. How about instead of listening to eachother calling a music genre stupid or label eachother, how about we listen to music, because I think thats the point of it.

This is the definition of 'emo' from wikipedia pleasee ;

Initially, the term "emo" was an abbreviation of "emocore", itself short for "emotional hardcore", and was coined to describe the music of the mid-1980s DC scene and its associated bands. The most recognizable names of the period included Rites of Spring, Embrace, Beefeater, Grey Matter, Fire Party and slightly later, Moss Icon. The first wave of emo began to fade after the breakups of most of the involved bands in the early 1990s.

Starting in the mid-1990s, the term "emo" largely reflected the indie scene that followed the influences of Fugazi, which itself was an offshoot of the first wave of emo. Bands including Sunny Day Real Estate, and Texas Is the Reason put forth a more indie rock brand of emo, which was more melodic and less chaotic in nature than its predecessor. The so-called "indie emo" scene survived until the end of the 1990s, as many of the bands either disbanded or shifted their style to the mainstream.

As the remaining indie emo bands entered the mainstream, newer bands began to emulate the more mainstream style, creating a style of music that has now earned the moniker "emo" within popular culture. Whereas, even in the past, the term "emo" was used to identify a wide variety of bands, the breadth of bands listed under today's emo is even more vast, leaving the term "emo" as more of a loose identifier than as a specific genre of music.

In all of its forms, emo music generally shares some of the same concepts: personal, meaningful lyrics, usually of an introspective nature, and a deep connection with a band's audience.
----

I think MANY people have actually lost the meaning of emo. But yeah, go wikipedia <3

I think MANY people have actually lost the meaning of emo. But yeah, go wikipedia <3
Wikipedia owns.

I didnt exactly say that if someone chooses a song and they like it then it turns out to be emo they are going to stop listening to it. I said the defenition on what i think it is, because i looked it up and such :$

And Bethie, i adore your post. =] Wikipedia is awesome <3 x]

Lmao!, Aviators aren't EMO, emo's for gay guys who forget to cut their hair.And when they drop a stone they say Pardon Me. The best music is heavy metal by far, then theirs punk rock. And "Nerd Glasses" aint anything like aviators.And your not half emo because you dont like tight jeans. Some ravers round our area dont even like tight jeans, so are you half rvaer/half goth/half punk/half mosher....no, I dont think so.

So i would say to you "What a dam well stupid description?"

I wasnt saying aviators are emo lol i for one have never seen a emo wear sunglasses, i actually havnt seen a emo wear bold glasses... i think there awesome 'nerd glasses' makes me wnt 2 poke my eyes cause i really wnt some lol
I think its hard to 'sterotype' me into one group... i listen to 2 many music catagories... i love inme and the alt rock, i love love queen and they were regarded as glamour rock, then again i love cher i think she rocks (she isnt rock i mean she rules). I do listen to emotive rock.
An one ma best m8s goes out with a fully emo and he isnt gay... i asked my m8 on bus today why she thought emo's wore tight jeans... its because they think ist fashion not cause there gay... like i sterotypin here but 'chavs' like burberry and goths like corsettes (well one of my other m8s does, i have many friends lol)... its what people see as fashionable and i dislike people that just because people wear or act camp they automatically think there gay.
I'm sorry if you think i'm having a go at you, i'm truely not... i'm a very outspoken person, so dnt take it as an offence... i see this as a healthy debate.

Emo's a fashion statment {My opinion};)
I truely agree lol, well halfly... it isnta fashion statement its what type of music they listen to. but the emo look is a fashion statement, emo's in general are a catagory of music.

Well, techinically, another word for gay is Queer, and queer means odd, and odd is usually not good...
no offense to gays or anything. I have no problems with them, as long as they don't come on to me..

I hate the way people class other people as emos because of the way they look. I have black/purplish hair and a side fringe that covers one eye, so some people assume I'm an emo.
I like a lot of emo music too, but I wouldn't class myself as en emo, they're thought of as depressed wrist-slitting teenagers, and I don't wanna be thought of like that :p

I don't care what it means
What's the big deal with the "appearance" of "emo", and especially the freakin' music.. I mean I could get into 1 or 2 bands that were labelled as "emo" but not excessively like some people because I know their music tires so quickly and there is WAY better out there.
