View Full Version : memory problems
i thought i would post a thread here as i could really do with some advice on this.
over the past couple of months i have started to forget things like dates for days out and meeting etc. now, im starting to get worse again and im forgetting really simple things like 3 letter words, names of my pets and what i have done in the last hour..
for example, as some of you known i write news articles and they will take me 6 or 7 hours to finish because I forget about the news article, i'll forget what its about and i'll forget how to spell little words.
i just wanted to know if this was normal? my support worker wants to test me for dyslexia, and i dont understand why?
+rep for any advice
No it's not normal, go and get your self checked.

I struggle with some of the issues you have said,
When I think of something I tend to write it down to help me.
I even forget what I had for dinner like 10 mins after, it's rather odd but I forget major stuff and remember simple things.

They want to test you for dyslexia because it's the easy all-inclusive answer for any problems teens come across without actually solving the problem. If it's not just words that you're having a problem with then it's probably not that, sleep deprivation or poor diet are likely factors but if it's been persisting for a while now it's certainly worth seeing a doctor, and make sure you explain that it's affecting several things rather than focusing on anything in particular

It's not normal, but it doesn't really sound like dyslexia to me. Memory problems can be to do with lack of sleep, hormonal changes and sometimes because during teenage years you often "switch off" to things when you're not purposely listening.
Also, memory is something that can be exercised just like the body. Learning songs, poems, or whatever can help train it up!!

Edit: oh ok.. FlyingJesus got there first but OH WELL :(
Not normal but doesn't always mean severe.
Make sure you are getting plenty of sleep, drinking lots of fluid (preferably water) and getting the right nutrients to allow your body, and especially your brain to function properly. If you're under a lot of stress and anything like that, that could contribute.
Some people just have a lazy mind, short/long term memory problems that go after a while.
Nevertheless, your GP is there for a reason, any worries you have you go to them so you can put your mind to rest. Either way you'll come out better off than if you kept it to yourself and the internet.
Good luck.

its more likely to be poor diet, i eat quite a balanced diet most of the time but it definitely wouldn't be sleep deprivation. thanks :-) x
