After reading sam's thread it's got me thinking...
Ok so basically I come from a working class background, nobody in my family did university and my cousins etc dropped out of college/sixth form. So I'm the only one really that actually wants to do something out of my life, but every time I try and talk to talk to my mother about it she doesn't really understand why I want to go onto university as she would be happy with whatever I did, she said to me in the past to just have an average day job in a department store or whatever. I have a part time job in a clothes store at the moment, the thought of having to do that for the rest of my life makes me want to physically die. I would love to go university but I still have no idea what I want to do as a career.
Have you had similar experiences with your parents or know of anyone?
Um, my dad did but my mum didn't. I think my dad took Science there or something! :P

Nah my parents didn't. I think my Auntie went to college or something and has a degree or A level in English Literature but that's it really.

none of my family have been to university. i'm the only one that's went this far. my brother has 5 highers (i think that's similar to alevels?) but he didn't go to college or university which i think is a shame. none of us were ever pushed to really work hard at school, so i never did but now my mum is very encouraging about what i wanna do (cause i asked her to be :$) and it really motivates me and makes me try harder. my mum left school at 16 and said that's all you could do at her age and her background. i'm from a working class background too but i think that makes me want it more.

My parents didn't, they didn't go to college either I think but they had no problem with me or my brother going college, they actually encouraged it.
my mom started teacher training university but had to leave when she fell pregnant with me and married my dad. because of this my mom has always pushed me academically. maybe sometimes too much. my dad got an internship with the police when he was 16 so he was very lucky ha.

Neither of my parents did and my older brother didn't go so I was the first person in my family to go to uni and my family support me and I'm so glad I went, I love it!

My dad definitely didn't, but I think my mum might have. I'm not sure. They both encouraged me to go to university.

I didn't post the thread because of the posting challenge. I was genuinely curious of people's backgrounds.

No I remember my dad talking about it the other day and said that he went straight into work with no GCSE's or something or little and he is doing fine. My mum said her dad walked her around the shops when she left school until she found a job - it worked haha.

Yeah both my parents went to uni, my dad went when he was younger but my mum didn't work for years until one day she just decided enough was enough and wanted a good career and decided she wanted to do midwifery, my mums side of the family are the type to look down on ppl who go to uni for some strange reason and think you should just "GET A JOB AND LEAVE HOME" blahblah so when she told them at 38 she was going to become a midwife they just laughed at her and said "you'll never do it" however she did and she's the only one on her side of the family with a real profession, I look up to my mum so much for that and it encourages me to do well and get a good career, which I know I most probably will have in around 4 years if i stick to my plan on going into nursing (not to sound big headed)
went so comma mad there so tired eurg. time 4 bed

Neither of my parents went to do anything good xD
My dad is just going back to college for a more intelligent qualification rather than practical work, but most of his awards have been earned during employment.
I'm only in my 1st year of GCSEs, but I'm already planning my A-Levels and possible Uni degrees. My mum is always like "Whatever you do, I'll support you. It's your choice to make." which is really odd, considering she likes to control the other important things in my life LMFAO.
I think it's good for your parents to be involved in your Uni, but not too intrusive xD

Nope. My mum went to a special school so obviously did the bare minimum but my dad went to school and was a bit of a pillock and left school with barely any gcse's, but now he's at college at the ripe age of 43 haha

No one in my family has been to university apart from me but they still have pretty decent jobs and I dont think a degree was important to their jobs back then

Well, my mother dropped out her first year in high school due to illness, my dad completed high school, got a factory job, and we're doing pretty well on our own. They both seem to have a HUGE interest in my life, and want the best for me, so their both all for me going to college.
So, I have, and I haven't, had an experience like yours.

I've never really asked my dad about his past or what he does etc. I know of his job, and that he's done well in life, but don't really understand...
I researched him (yes I researched about my own dad LOL) and found out so much about him, kinda makes me want to work harder to achieve what he has in life. :P
He went to London Business School and has been manager of logistics at Glaxo, an OD at Glaxo, and is now an HR Director at a global charity. He's also a consultant and is a member of the Institute of Directors and the CIPD.
I'm not certain about my Dad, but my Mum didn't go to university or college.

both parents didn't, i (was/will be) the first in my family to go to uni.
None of my family went University, I think my parents barely scraped their O-Levels (as they were called back then) and then my dad joined the police as my mum got preggerz with me.... yeah... i think only one other person in my whole family has ever gone uni >.>

Neither of mine did, joined the RAF as soon as they could. Unis the in thing to do at the moment but its just making it harder for people who actually want to go there. Most people are just going because its the next step, lots of people I know who went had allot of problems, one guy I know got rejected from the course he wanted and just took something random (that without putting the phone down from his rejected so literately the first course he saw he took.) so he could go to uni, but I think he's enjoying it so its not all that bad.
I think education is taking a step in the wrong direction with masses of people getting into sixth forms & colleges which used to require ** and A GCSEs and now don't, more and more people are getting into UNI based on points from easy courses, meaning half of the people who end up in UNI aren't really the cleverest. UNIs should only be for the highest achieving or else we'll end up with no way to differ the intelligent from the average if everyone's got a degree.
Conspiracy.

My dad has a degree in electrical engineering, he's also sitting a degree in astronomy (part-time) right now. My mum didn't.

Neither of mine did. My mum was smart enough but she got a big promotion where she was working so took that (and ended up becoming the youngest bank manager in London ever, omg). My dad failed most of his O and A levels, but worked rly hard for himself so he now has a good job. They're both rly intelligent but I'm like my dad, it's more real intelligence and we fail at exams, lol!
