View Full Version : Being a gentleman or lady

When walking home from town earlier I was thinking about my sort of code of how I live in regards to my relationship which got me thinking what do I do right and wrong in my relationship? Which then got me thinking how to be a better boyfriend. So I'm now asking for you rules on how to be a gentleman (or a lady for the women here).
My general code with my girlfriend is;
She's second only to family
She's not aloud to spend a penny on me, nor will she spend a penny of her money whilst i'm there
If she's in trouble I will always help her out
And plenty more but I want to know your rules for being the perfect boyfriend or girlfriend :)

I don't think there's such thing as a perfect girlfriend/boyfriend or even a perfect relationship for that matter every relationship has issues which need to be worked on.

I thought this was really interesting what you said. Right I know it's nice to spend money on your girlfriend/boyfriend or whatever but for me, I hate it when people pay for things for me no matter who it is. I think you have to find a balance, yeah sure I think it's fine to do this in like the first couple of months or whatever but as your relationship is to progress I don't think it's right for it to be one sided like this, it will get to the point where the person will rely on your money too much and expect you to pay for everything. Very one sided. I always like to have a balance and I like to have my own money and I like to stand on my own two feet every now and then.
But yeah my 'rules' would just be to treat my partner with respect and I'd expect exactly the same in return and no less. Honesty is always the best policy, lies always get you caught out one way or another and just leads to more agro. When I'm in a relationship I'm generally no different to how I am with my friends so I near enough keep the same attitudes towards everything, I just make sure I can do everything I can to make that person happy.
P.S. you posted this in the wrong section ;) haha

Yeahhh I see what you mean, it just depends on different people I'd say it only would mainly apply for older people anyways but saying that I know loads of people who live off their boyfriends and don't even work lmao.

nothing is perfect. as for your girlfriend not spending a penny on you, i don't think that's being a gentleman and you'll probably come to be resentful towards her. does that include gifts such as birthday, christmas, anniversary etc? MY preference is that it's okay for a guy to pay everything on the first few dates and it'd be nice to have him do it on other occasions but i don't expect it (if he doesn't pay on the first date though at the very least, i'm gonna be pretty pissed :().
it's nice to be able to spend money on someone you love, i get more enjoyment buying for someone rather than myself. you don't have to do everything completely for her, it'll make you seem too possessive and she'll feel as though she's trapped - in my experience at least. if that's what she likes then fine.
i don't see a relationship as being 2 people as 1, we are all still individuals and need to deal with things by ourselves. lending your support and offering help is much better than just giving it. communication is key for me, you need to be open and honest about your own rules and restrictions within your relationship as it differs between people. if it doesn't come to you naturally then don't try too hard to do it.
