Recursion told me the other day that the search function caused major issues with server performance and the new posts link makes a new search every time so they may have disabled it until they can improve performance.
Edit: In fact all searching has been disabled.

New announcement explains all:
We have disabled the search engine function on HabboxForum. This is because we believe part of the search function built into vBulletin is one of the main reasons why the forum goes down every so often for a couple of minutes. While the search engine is disabled we will continue monitoring each Habbox site and fix any issues that would be causing any downtime for our users.
The built-in search engine also does control "What's New?" or "New Posts" and that does mean it will also be disabled. If you wish to use a similar feature then you can use the "Activity Stream" which you can click on by the navigation bar at the top of the forum or by going to: http://www.habboxforum.com/activity.php
We apologise for this and I know the search is a function a lot of users do use but we need to carry out these investigations.

so to investigate downtime you disable the only thing that keeps the forum (very barely) active.
I'm sure basically everyone uses new posts to see and reply to threads -.-
**** sake.

I love people on this forum. You complain about the server issues or downtime and then you complain when we actually deal with these issues... you just can't win. It is also not our fault that vbulletin combines "New Posts" into the actual search engine itself. We are doing this to investigate and if it stops the forum going down then we have found the issue, like Chippiewill said:

I complain about maintenance during peak times.
I complain about downtimes as a result to Jins inactivity and your inability to do anything about it
I couldn't care less about 3 minute downtime at 2:30AM if it means we get to keep the most useful feature on the website.
So when will it be re-enabled.

I complain about maintenance during peak times = We updated quite a lot of stuff that was outdated and needed updating.
I complain about downtimes as a result to Jins inactivity and your inability to do anything about it = If you read the posts in this thread you would find out we have an actual person who has server access and their name isn't Jin. Oh and they are VERY active.
So when will it be re-enabled = When we feel it isn't a problem or we have found an alternative.
Oh and this isn't what causes the forum to go down at half 2 in the morning.

You can update outdated stuff at non-peak times.
I'm aware of that and i've not mentioned it since he got access.
Get a plugin or something to deal with it and now show the contents and details of every post thats made.

Yes we can but a lot of us do not have the time or wish to stay at up at these times to update the part of the server. Hence why we have to take it down during peak times, we don't like doing it but if it needs doing it needs doing. Like I said, once we have alternatives then you get your features back.

So does the activity stream work without forcing a search or something because it just looks like new posts but with all the ugly unnecessary bits added in
I never really figured out why so many people used vBulletin, especially on larger sites. To me it just seemed rather poorly put to together and it if does turn out to be true that the search is having such a detrimental affect on the server's performance then this really only confirms it.

vBulletin isn't the issue though, many forums a lot larger than habbox with a ton more active members, posts and threads have absolutely no issue with the default search facilities

We have lives, I sure as hell aren't going to be up at 3 - 4am doing software upgrades unless there's payment involved.
I told Matt to disable the search function because I have a few bits of evidence that seem to suggest it is infact the search that kills the forum every so often during the day (which many users complain about...) and apparently vBulletin's search doesn't scale well past 500,000 posts. We disabled search to confirm this theory and hopefully to see if it will be worthwhile moving to a different search function. If it proves false, we'll reenable it tomorrow or the next day and investigations will continue.

It just has to load the last 25 posts on the forum. The new posts link had to identify which posts you'd already read.

A lot of vbulletin running forums that I'm aware of disable the normal search

OcUK forums as an example of the top of my head
Double your posts (nearly 16m) and it's never suffered issues with the search.
(and if its anything related to current users) it has at least 500 members online as well as the hundreds of guests/bots viewing the forum using the search facility at a time.

You don't have a clue what OcUK are running on the backend, hardware or software wise.

Didn't mean my last post to come across as ****** :P
A lot of forums use third party search backends that integrate with the overall style of the default vB search functions, you usually wouldn't notice.
Well if you throw enough money at a problem I'm sure it will go away. But considering OcUK is quite a large business and HxF is not then I don't think it is reasonable to compare the two and expect they can both solve problems in the same way.

OCUK although to be fair no sane forum should allow non-members to use the search.
Edit: If new posts is to be disabled indefinitely I would personally find the activity stream much more usable if it wasn't so bulky with avatars etc.

Probably lost in a vbulletin update. Actually that accounts for the massive gap in the search on the forum because I remember a couple of months ago you could search for stuff and wouldn't get any results in like october-january or something.
