I Am thinking of taking up a self defence class.I was hoping for the martial arts kind but could you tell me some you think are good and if you've learnt them.Thanks,Cortez xD

i wanted to go marshal arts, but i was to lazy so i just watched loads and loads of jackie chan movies :p :eusa_danc
When I was younger I took karate (hard fist style, there's many versions of karate for some reason) for a couple of years until my teacher broke his back at his job.
I recommend it.

Boxing isnt a self defence thing its just a violent sport
It can be used as a self defense, and if you know what you are doing, it's not violent...

If it makes you feel any better I'm a weak twig and although I've learned how to take a beating, I'm sure you'd kill me after awhile. :P

In boxing, you learn how to evade and fight. You need to be able to block, duck, move, ect. You use swift movements to your advantage and then you strike. If you can do that, you won't die. Also, he can just train. If he decides to fight, he can stop whenever he feels like it.
They do have martial arts competitions in which sometimes, sadly, someone does die.

I hate people who complain when there fat.. For me it has way more benifits...
People tend not to mess with me or I just kinda sit on them :)

If you don't want to be weak, lift weights. Don't do like 100s, just around 50s.
I bench press 50 because I don't want to overdo myself.
Just giving advice.

i do kickboxing and boxing - dont do boxing hurts like heck and the pain comes back even ifu aint doing it u get random headaches from nowhere

Only a little over weight Im 13stone and 6ft so only over weight but not majorly over weight...
Um.. I think I have loads more beifits.. Are you in high school yet as thats when I found the benifits.. Not being picked on etc.. Also sports you can throw further etc.. because of your weight is behind it

LoL. I don't picked on right now, but I'm only like 6/7 pounds overweight, not that much. In sports, I am usually one of the first picked because I am good :P.

I took boxing before... If you can evade and get a clean shot in, you basically
are good. And if that doesn't work, block.. You do take some hits, but I mean they don't hurt THAT bad. Sure, some may leave bruises but that's all.

:)... I appreciate the advice but I oddly like being weak. While working in the factory for 2 years hanging parts I put on muscle but a year later while at college I kind of lost it. I don't really miss it as no one messes with me and if anyone did a good knee to the gut and a head shot with my guitar and I'm good.

umm u need to see the guys im facing -.- im only good for my speed and my quick jabs the guys i fight all bout hard hits kinda hard to block when im jammed in the corner or against the ropes with sum massive guy wailing on me still fun tho :d

u dont really lose muscle only if u dont do nething with that muscle for a long period of time but if it was there before if u work out it comes back faster :D

Um, I did karate for few years but I stopped. I broke my toe two times, my leg once and my arm once :rolleyes: but it's fun taking it. But make sure if you really start training it, stay in good shape.

Cheers for all the advice xD For me its between 2 choices now. Kung Fu-In which Bruce Lee became a master of,and he's like one of my heroes =or= Karate-People have given good feedback about it on the forum xD

do karate the one i go have these fun night sort of where they do karate related fun i remember when i had to fight this girl and push her out the ring she was a heffalump :D
