i have them, got them in february and getting my bottom braces on tomorrow, they don't hurt when they're putting them on but afterwards it's hard to bite and chew foods, but the pain goes after a few days

i don't really avoid many foods, just hard foods mainly

I would say chewing gum was a no no? Or that's what I got told as I was meant to have braces but didn't get them.

i had them for 5 years.
i hated them!
they hurt when you get home and it feels like your teeth are going to fall out.

They're not really painful, maybe in the first few days of having them and whenever they are adjusted you will feel discomfort when you eat, but other than that you won't notice any difference. In terms of what you can/cant eat, they will probably tell you that when you have them on, but personally the only thing I stopped having was chewing gum and toffee.

As Lerdulo said, it doesn't hurt when they are put on. It's a tightening sensation, but not painful at all.

The pain, however, does kick in after a day or so - It's more of an ache than a pain, mind. Then, it disappears a few days after it kicks in - the process starts over when you get them tightened.

When they put them on, they don't hurt at all. It only hurts when they get tightened, for 2-3 days but after a few appointments the pain disappears and you don't notice it. You're supposed to avoid basically everything, crisps, sweets, chocolate, chewing gum everything like that... but I didn't avoid them, I ate loads of them and so did my friends and my braces have never broke - neither have my friends just as long as you're careful.

I had them for 18mo, they don't really hurt but they do ache like hell. I would suggest avoiding chewing gum, caramel and food like apples and enctarines that you have to bite into, or food will get so stuck (unless you cut them up). If you have white bands on them, eating curry will stain them and make your teeth look realllyyy yellow, so that's at your own risk :) Hope everything goes ok!

I had them lizzy but I got them off by 16, I didn't mind them thought it's just a pain cleaning them properly 'cause I destroyed my toothbrush daily! They only hurt when they get tightened or something but you get used to it real fast, it's quite the experience I didn't mind going the orthadontist either 'cause it was always in school time & my orthadontist had some rate nice boobies. On another note haha lizzy you're gonna be like 18 when you get yours off gg sixth form/college no one wanna kiss u not that they ever did teehehehehehehsdighseo3 5tv

I got mine off last Wednesday :D I'm not gonna lie, they hurt when you first get them (did for me anyway) but nothing pain killer won't solve and you'll have amazing teeth after so it's worth it.

they hurt like a *****. the first time u get them on they'll hurt for around a week (well, they did for me) and then whenever u get them tightened they'll kill when u eat. usually i just eat noodles n yoghurts when i get them tightened because i really can't eat anything else. make sure u do a good job at brushin ur teeth!!! avoid chicken/meat on a bone because that just breaks them... oh and sweets and apples!!

I didn't avoid any foods to be honest. If I wanted an apple I would cut it up and with toffee I would just put it in my mouth till its soft. I didn't avoid chewing either, I did for the first month or so but I really wanted one and they don't get stuck (well I tried purposely to see if it would and I couldn't manage to do it).

Not gunna like, like others have said already, they will most likely hurt when you get them but they will die down eventually and it actually came to a point that when they tightened them it didnt ache afterwards at all.

Outcome is worth it!

Had them for a year on my top teeth, only time they hurt was when they were first put on for like a week not when they were tightened or anything. It's different for everyone and I guess depending on the type (upper, lower, both etc). Cleaning them gets annoying but after a while is fine... if you don't loose the special toothbrush like I did :S and you can have like toffee etc just suck them :P Deff no gum though, or full apples

I was supposed to have braces too, but my dentist changed his mind xD

I had them, got em off now (woo straight teeth) avoid anything hard, when you first get em sticky to mushy food (yogurts, mash, ice cream etc). They hurt for about 2 weeks when you first get them, then they're fine then when they get tightened for the first time it'll ache for about a week and from then on it doesnt really hurt

lol im probably the person who has had braces on for the longest time ever. 4/5 years i dno lost count. hopefully getting them off soon (thank god). umm they hurt when they are first put on but after a couple of days your teeth readjust to it and its fine. but they do hurt abit when you go back every month or so to get them re-tightened, but for me anyway after like a year or whatever i couldnt feel it. I've had so much **** done to my teeth its insane, operations the lot. my teeth weren't even that bad originally. anyway they say you shouldn't really eat toffee or apples etc. but i still eat the same as what other people would eat.

Yeah I broke my braces on toffee. I thought it was just a myth, but it's true ;s

They're fine for the first two or three hours after you first have them put on, but after that you have to live through about forty-eight hours of hell! Luckily, it calms down after two or three days :)
Beforehand, I suggest you plan every meal you eat for two days after first getting them on. Choose soft foods only because when I had mine first on I wanted to cryyy during mealtimes. You should do this every time they get tightened too (ugh).

Edit: oh yeah. For me, I got loadsss of ulcers and it was so painful just to move my mouth :( Before you leave the orthodontists, make sure the wire isn't sticking out at either end (you'll see what I mean when you get them :S) because it's so ow if they're even just a tiny bit wrong!

The pain isn't so much in your teeth moving as that's fairly gradual. The way they rip your gums and cheek lining apart every time you open and close your mouth is worse by a long way

I had braces for 6, nearly 7 years, I got so used to them it was unreal having them off, From when I just hit 10, till just before my 17th birthday, which was 5 months ago.
And for 2 Years I had headgear that I had to wear at night.

after probably a year, I would just eat anything, once you know the limits of them, you kind of re-learn how to eat.

But, when I first got them, I lived of soup! :P

Just 2 years left on retainers now

Oh, and at the ripping skin off bit, you will find after a while the skin in your mouth gets more resilient to the braces, only time it may hurt is when you got for a checkup and get the wire adjusted, times I've had to go back because the wire was too long and digging into the rear of my mouth.
You get a small tub of soft wax, so if you do find any hard points, you can put a bit of wax on each day (And some more after you eat, etc) Just to stop it digging in, until you can get it adjusted.
