I doubt they will remove the events feature. I'm pretty sure they're just trying to further limit communication.

But events was already disabled. I would imagine it's so they can introduce one feature at a time, events being one of those features. This way they can focus solely on the console, then chat, then events. I can't see them getting rid of events; the uproar would be immense.
