Are you starting University this sep? If yes, Then what are you planning to study?

Nah I decided against going to university and opted for the more employment route but no luck as of yet. I classed university as a risk as I could have failed, not liked the course/university I went to/on etc.

Good luck though!

Ah I see your view :) I would of done the same, however the filed I would like to get into kinda 'forces' me to take the Degree road.

If everything goes to plan... yes! Need AAB to get into Lancaster University to study BA English Language. They offer two minor options too, so I'm considering either Sociology, Criminology or Sociolinguistics. :)

Awww Sam, the cost shouldn't put you off at all. You don't start paying it back until you're earning over £22,000 and only then it works out at £90 per year. It's highly unlikely that people will repay the full amount as it's written off after 30 years anyway.

lawrawrrr;

Yeah maybe so but it's still the wonder whether I'd fail or not and not like it. I'd rather try get a job than go to uni for 3/4 years and not get anywhere.

Also luce; I remember seeing his hometown or something of Lancaster that's why I said it - geography's not my strong point :D.

Aww Sam you never know, going through 3/4 years of uni especially with a sandwich year (placement), may get you somewhere or give you a starting point. However, having said that, uni isn't the only option, find the best that suits you. Good luck with finding a job :)

I should be going to uni this year hopefully.

Sociolinguistics sounds interesting, what does that entail?

Sociolinguistics looks at how language differs in relation to one's region, occupation, class, gender and ethnicity. There's some modules in the main English Language degree that allow me to look at English in a social context / Accents, Dialects / etc, so perhaps I'll just stick with that and choose Sociology and Criminology as my two additional. Not sure yet! :P

I've been studying Crime and Deviance in Sociology so they both seem to go hand-in-hand, whilst being quite different at the same time. The whole point of the minor subjects is that you can keep your options open without being too selective so early on in your university life. Should be quite good... if I get the results, of course! :P

I think if you choose to carry them on for the full three years then it ends up being a joint honours. I selected the Study Abroad course though, so it may depend on what the structure is like at the partner university too.

I'd really like to go out to the USA. Lancaster University have four partner universities over there: University of Missouri Columbia; University of Nebraska, Lincoln; University of New Hampshire; University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

UNC Chapel Hill is probably my favourite at the minute, it looks so nice and it's really good. Their School of Public Health is named after our family name too, haha! :P

Ha, I haven't even considered that route actually! I've always been passionate for English Language throughout school and I've done work experience at several newspapers to get a taste for field; I always thought that kind of institution would suit me well. You never know, my tastes might change completely at university! :P I've actually really enjoyed all three of my A-Levels (English Language, Sociology, and Psychology) but I get the feeling that the latter would be far too focused on Research Methods or Biology at degree level; I much prefer the more Psychological or Behavioural aspect of it. It's a possibility, of course! :)

Yes same! :O I shall have to remember your face ;) What are your views on MI6 and GCHQ? I have a friend 'potentially' joining GCHQ. to me, MI6 due to that being a global service doesn't appeal to me than MI5.. with MI5 its pretty much like the 'queens secret' army so ye :) I got told I should join up for SAS. however that route doesn't really seem for me.

Second year at college, we're starting our UCAS applications now though I am still not 100% on if I will go or not. :(

Ahh I was kinda in the same shoes as you. My advice is to have a big think of what you REALLY want to be, could be anything from a icecream guy to working in a high-end business etc then think "how can I do this with hardly much experience". For example; if you wanted to become a icecream person and run your own business you would want to do a business degree. What are you currently studding at College?

@Rozi yeah i'm not studying criminology i'm doing Psychology but my masters will be in Forensics which will involve some of it. I didn't want to specialise too early and also I am interested in neuroscience and haven't really had the opportunity to do that in the depth i have with forensic so may end up going down that path instead.

If you wanted to start uni this year I think you'll need to wait for clearing now.. anyhow the best way to make a dession on what you would like to become is have a long hard think (perhaps in the shower!.. as we all know most thoughts happen within the shower..!) about what you really like, judge them on the skills and things you've learnt from college and put them into good use :) OR do what I did was take a Gap year from education and went into work.. thus giving yourself some vital work experience and more time to think what you really want to become :)

I started uni this year in March and was so close to not going to university, but I did and I love it. At high school I didn't do fantastic and had mainly a C average most the way few but after my first semester I now have a B+ average and I couldn't be happier with the choice I made. BUT in saying this it depends a lot on what you choose and how it suits you. I went to a university where it is more practical and hands-on rather than theoretical. Which suited me a lot better.
For those of you who are wondering I am doing a Bachelor of Business with a double major of Accounting and Information Systems at AUT University in Auckland, New Zealand.

I went to look around the University of Hull whilst at High School - it was a History trip and we went to learn about Nanny States... which was strange because we weren't even studying them! I remember the buildings looked so nice and old, with ivy covering the sides. Looked really nice.
It's not a bad university, seems to be the second choice of everybody who don't get into Leeds/Sheffield/Manchester but its probably the city itself that lets it down. Yeah, the buildings are lovely - I'm based in one of the brick/ivy buildings at the front entrance. Even inside too - the map room just oozes history.

Are you off to university this year?

Oooo how cool! I don't really know much about Hull but I highly doubt you'll be bored wherever you end up! :D Yessss, I got offers from Lancaster, Leeds, Newcastle, Birmingham and Sussex; firmed Lancaster University for BA English Language (Study Abroad)... just need to get the AAB requirement!! :D

Biology, Geography, Maths and deciding between Physics and Chem:)

Hard choice! Which one are you leaning towards? Biology is really good tied with Chemistry, opening up many chemistry, biochemistry, medicine etc related courses up but on the other hand Physics is strong when it's tied with Maths! Choose wisely Neo!

I'm hoping to go to university as a mature student (age 21 going on 22) in 2014 after an Access course, which is a fair while away, I would've went at 18 but my education/life's been a bit of a mess since leaving school. Thinking of either the Biological Sciences or Law. I'm gonna try for a good uni as well, not Oxbridge, but a Russell Group/1994 group uni. If you're paying £9k p/a for tuition fees you may as well go the best place you can (at least that's the way I see it)

Indeed Plod;. The uni I'm going is apparently on the top for criminology studies.. and like you stated if we're now having to pay 9K might aswell go to the best uni for our chosen course :) best of luck to you! :)

Leaving after my first (foundation) year for an IT apprenticeship at BT! :) They'll pay me to do a foundation degree, with a guaranteed job at the end, +10% pay every year (on top of bonuses and other pay increases) and all sorts of other benefits... really looking forward to it. The experience will be invaluable to me in the future.

So you're leaving uni, for an IT apprenticeship, then they'll pay for you to do a different course at uni with a job at the end of it? Sorry just trying to understand what you mean ;p Did you need A levels to get onto the apprenticeship 'cause I'm looking into doing A levels or an apprenticeship atm

Also if I got it right what course was it you were doing before you left?

Does going as a mature student change anything/what's classed as an adult since I'll be doing my A levels come september and I'll be finnishing them at 20. :(

Doesn't change a thing. I'm 19 atm and will be 20 by the time I start uni. Many of my college friends are 19-25 and they also will be starting and I know a lot of people who are over 19 and are at uni. I wouldn't worry about itc:)

I was doing Computer Science. BT do two levels of apprenticeships, lower and higher. Higher apprenticeships need A Levels to get onto and will give you a foundation degree at the end of it in a course related to your apprenticeship (so you'd have to top up to a full degree in your own time, if you wanted)... if you meet all your targets you get a job at the end of it too.

The guaranteed job, the fact I'm being paid to do most of a degree and the experience I'll get was more than enough to convince me to drop Uni :P

in my honest opinion a "good uni" is relative. a russell group university for my course is completely inappropriate and possibly the worst choice. i hate the snobbery in university places.

From what I know, they (apparently) give leeway to mature students aged 21+
At least that's what a bunch of mature students on TSR and irl who have applied for uni told me, if you get invited for an interview it's a good sign too, since they're more likely to give a lower offer.

Sorry that my post came across as snobby (didn't intend it!), but it's quite a known fact that (for some courses, particularly academic ones) that your uni choice in some cases can affect your employment prospects depending on what field you want to go for. For example, a top law firm will nearly always take someone who went to say.. Manchester University over someone who went to MMU. My brother works in finance and wishes he went to a better uni than where he did go to (Coventry Uni).

But you're right, it depends on your course and career choice at the end of the day. Obviously if you want to do a niche degree or study something such as Nursing, Physiotherapy, Engineering, etc. what uni you go for is irrelevant. In your case where you want(ed?) to go was the best for you and that's what important. I just cringe at sixth formers who are so desperate to get into uni that they pick a subject that they half care about and want to go for any uni that'll take them even though it's going to leave them in debt throughout adulthood.

russell group isn't everythin tbh, i got offers from russell group uni and ended up not going to one, doesn't mean it is below par. i was mainly focused on choosing a uni with good future employment prospects, and so my course has a placement year (3rd year) which means my course is 4 years long, but experience will be a big help in finding me a grad job (WIV HOPE ANYWAY)

in other news i get my results soon and want to vomit, economics y do u have to let me down. urgh

The best uni doesn't mean the best one on the league tables. I chose my "below-par uni" (in term of league tables anyway) based on its small campus, city centre location and friendly atmosphere and I've enjoyed it.

Agree completely. Durham is said to be the Uni for Oxbridge rejects and everyone is really posh and bright. Yet, it's rated 84 or something due to the fact that it's got very limited faculties, not as much research etc.

What list is Durham ranked ~84? It's consistently ranked in the top 5-10 on pretty much all lists (Times, Good University Guide, etc) and more often than not on international rankings as well. They joined the Russell Group this year, but even before that they were in the 1994 Group. Along with Warwick University and University College London it is pretty popular among Oxbridge rejects, although that isn't a bad thing, obviously, since Oxbridge reject thousands of bright applications every year.

You are looking at UK rankings. I'm talking about worldwide ranking lists. It is ranked there because the subjects it offers is limited, there aren't as many international students and it isn't as strong as some in research by professors. Many various factors are taken into account.

At the end of the day, the big guns are the international Uni rankings. As proven otherwise (of what you claim) in Times WORLD Ranking http://www.timeshighereducation.co.uk/world-university-rankings/2011-2012/top-400.html :).

@Grig

Tbh unless you're planning to work abroad or something, world rankings doesn't mean a lot. National rankings are more important for most people.
