Talking now works the following.
First you have to take a Safety Quiz, which is like the Habbo Way quiz.
If you have it correct, you can talk again.
You can only say words that are white listed. Other words turn into locks and are censored.
In the Picnick Area you can suggest words for the whitelist.

So it seems that it's now more of a "dictionary" than a filter? We can only say words that are pre-approved by Habbo. Hmmm, that's probably going to make things a lot more difficult but I hope they're quite lenient with it.
Good to see you on HxF again btw! :)

Wow seriously? The white list must be huge then? Are they talking about words that could be misconcepted as sexual or generic words such as 'the,' 'it' and 'you.' etc.?
People are obviously going to abuse the suggestions for white list words aren't they?

Don't like the idea of having pre-approved words? There's millions of words in the English language + other language users on .com and not forgetting God knows how many internet acronyms there are. I've been on sites who used a system similar to this and it bugged the hell outta me. How does the system work with numbers Laurensh1; is it still 5 numbers max. before the red or just no numbers or what.
At least we can go suggest words to add to the list I suppose lol.

I can't type any number, every number turns into locks. I wonder how they'll do that.

Aye :l And no doubt the new ban system will be just like club penguins, i.e. on club penguin if you say "*REMOVED* you" you get a auto server ban within seconds of saying it. urgh, something tells me this so called 'new' filter system will become quite annoying.

Habbo.fi is the only non English speaking hotel that blocks access because it's had this latest update. I'm assuming they aren't going to add words from other languages to each hotel's safe word list, so they've blocked country-wide IPs? Who knows!
I really don't think they've blocked access because "it's the first hotel to be unmuted". :)

And Paul's latest blog talks of 'freedom of speech.' Yeah, right. A banned words list would have been far better as opposed to an acceptable words list, but I guess they've done it this way so that no one can get around banned words, as someone will always find a way and think of something not on the list. By doing it this way, they have complete control over what we can actually say. I can see my Big Brother game falling apart here; I'm doubting they've added in words such as 'housemate' and 'evict.' You'll have to excuse me, I don't go around Habbo much nowadays; I spend most of my time running my Big Brother (search Piipp) when I'm online, or upgrading the rooms or building a new house. Honestly though, I'll be sending them a list of suggested words all relating to Big Brother, lol, I need to be able to play my game! Oh, and news from Paul on the IP block:
Paul LaFontaine @PaulLaFo
We have IP blocked Finland so we can test a few adjusted system without it being flooded with non-Finnish speakers. Temporary. thx
He's also mentioned that Tuesday isn't actually the day of the unmute as he said last night; it all depends on the hotel. I'm pretty sure .com will be one of the last seeing as it's our hotel which caused these problems to start with and it's the biggest hotel they have; we require a lot more work than others.
EDIT:
Had to post this as the first thought that came in to my head made me laugh so hard. Just so you know the background, this user has just posted a link Paul's twitter to his blog where he is slating the new chat system. In the middle of this blog he posted this:
'You're going to disturb, and lose hundreds if not thousands more users because of this system, I implore you to re-think this. You're going to end up having a system like Moshi-Monsters, and they only need 12 moderators due to the chat being so limited no one can insult anyone else. '
My first thought was: 'I bet Paul's eyes lit up when he read this and he started rubbing his hands together with a huge grin on his face. 'Just 12 moderators?! WOW! Think of the money we can save!''
Lol.
EDIT AGAIN:
Tom @_Tweeney
@PaulLaFo Will there be an option to disable this filter? Surely then disabling is taking it into the user's own risk and not yours?
Paul LaFontaine @PaulLaFo
@_Tweeney You earn your way out of it. So new accounts and people trying to switch and game a ban are limited. And parents can control too.
Seems the filter will only apply to new users and those who can't show they are mature enough to go without it. The idea seems to be preventing users getting banned or muted and just jumping into another account where they can continue in the same manner. With this in mind I'm assuming that, with a seven year old account, once I've passed the safety quiz I won't have a filter. Not really sure though, I think there will be more for us to do than just a quiz to unlock it, seeing as lots of us have older accounts and they need to ensure we're not there to groom children. So I think we'll probably have the quiz to unlock basic chat, and then further things to do before we can get rid of the filter. I can't see them just basing it on how old your account is, although it seems to be what Paul is implying.
Sorry for the long post!

Interesting post in general :P LMS is "Last Man Standing" I believe. It's usually hosted by Casino owners and the aim is to be the last one remaining in a certain area - a very long waiting game. I don't know of anything else referred to as "LMS". But yeah, they get you to type certain words/do certain actions to prove you're not AFK irl.
I'm fairly "iffy" about the whole "Earning your way out of it". If every new user who joins is restricted to the filter for X months, then they'd get pretty bored and leave quite quickly if the chat system was so restricted? I cannot stand games with only "approved words lists" because general conversation gets tedious and annoying - if I was a new user on Habbo and was forced into it, I'd leave quickly tbh. Although I suppose it could give players something to aim for lol.
The IP block makes sense I suppose xD.

21-06-2012, 06:04 PM
This is why I think there will be more to it than just waiting for so long for it to be unlocked. I think that's part of it, as Paul says it stops account hopping, but I think there has to be more to it than just time. Waiting so long isn't really earning anything; it's just waiting. And most of us have accounts that are years old already, so how can we earn our way out? There just has to be more to it.

I'd prefer if they censored certain word rather than have a pre-proved list of words. Seems like Club Penguin now..
I read HxF a lot, and in recent years have not posted much (as you can probably tell from my dated siggy and profile pic) - but this news story kind of made me feel the need to respond. /startrant
Firstly, the fact that the most basic thing about a social networking chat site, the actual speaking part, is going to be severely moderated/banned through a list of approved words as opposed to a list of banned ones (ie the bobba filter) shows an incredible sense of 1984, big brother, communistic style leadership. It makes me feel as if I am not trustworthy enough to speak for myself. The amount of work into creating a list of APPROVED words shows a vast amount of dedication to have total control over language. It's not about the words that are not allowed, it's about the ones that are. That is so very backwards and controlling it worries me.
Secondly, more than 99.9% of Habbo users were completely innocent in this, and although the odd insult/swear word will be thrown around, there was a distinct lack of numbers of users who actively fit the scary paedo profile the media seems to portray of the users. Thus, it's more than slightly unfair to subject the rule-abiding users to an almost month long mute for the sake of a tiny tiny minority. Furthermore, this minority of users have no attachment to the game. They most likely create an account, go to a room and see what they can get. These are not dedicated members of the community, nor do they bring anything to the game. They care not about it. So why should the rest of the users who devote a lot of time, effort and money into the game be punished for the actions of a tiny minority that use the game perhaps 5 minutes a week?
Another point that really worries me is the fact that the staff seem to be taking no responsibility for these matters. The staff's responses to the fiasco have been one of 'not my fault', passing the buck, and knee-jerk reactions. The fact that they simply do not trust users to even speak shows that they are taking no blame themselves, they are blaming ALL USERS. They are tarring everybody with the same brush, the accusation that all users are potential paedophiles, groomers, sexaddicts or whatever, when infact the reality of the situation is that through their budget cuts, reduction in staff involvement in community, and a distinct lack of proper moderation, they have singlehandedly destroyed in mere months what it took a dedicated team of people a decade to create: a safe, well moderated community that had the freedom to speak and do as they wished, and were trusted to do so. They need to acknowledge this because this is the reason why the hotel has gone down the tubes lately. There's a reason why they merged the hotels. Why they got rid of staff. Why they cut moderation. They wanted more money. It's simple greed.
They compromised the safety of young, naive, impressionable children and teenagers for the sake of saving a bit of cash on moderation. It's akin to the government withdrawing funding from child-protection services so that they can take an extra bonus at Christmas.
There is a reason why people call the days of Jibbi, Callie, Ione and Lost_Witness the good old days because that is exactly what they were: good. They were fun. There was a great sense of community, where you felt like you were part of something. How many people will look back on these days with fond memories? The mute, the scandal, the endless changes, the budget cuts, the destruction of a decade old community.
They can save as much money as they want, but it will not bring back that community. Doing that takes trust, respect, and hard work, and unfortunately for Paul LaFontaine, Sulake, and the other staff, those are not traits that you can buy, no matter how much cash you have.
/endrant. Sorry it's long x

Completely agree with you, :Act. Seems like the majority of the blame has been placed on the "pedos" and users engaging in sexual activities, when in fact Sulake is as much at fault for allowing it to continue.
Abdicators
22-06-2012, 12:53 AM
Nothing 1984 or big brother like here, Paul has announced that users will be able to 'earn' ("unlock") the ability to have free speech. This is a positive thing, not only will it limit the amount of trolls that consistently sign up on new accounts, but it will protect new users from immediately experiencing sex by not being able to respond to it. Which I did they might add, users were not ignored if they participatied in this activity. I've been banned for even mentioning a boob. Users just made new accounts.
Anyone wanting to break the Habbo Way by engaging in cyber or propositioning sex will have to unlock the ability to use free speech first. That seems like an awfully painstaking thing for theoretical paedophiles to have to do over and over again when the account they're using inevitably gets banned for sexual propositioning.
They're not blaming the entire community either. The UK alone attributes to 300,000 monthly Habbo users, do you think it's safe for them to continue to be able to talk whilst this fiasco has happened? Surely the proper approach would be to ensure the users have a safe environment to interact with. If it takes muting the millions of teens that use Habbo until this new system is implemented, then so be it. Sulake have to follow several guides lines when it comes to the moderation of young teenagers, they have to put those people first. The game is not primarily aimed at 18 year olds.
They're currently employing over 225 moderators. There is 11 different Habbo hotels, that's appropriately 20 moderators per local language, that's also 205 more moderators than Moshi Monsters has. Sulake started to implement measures to help moderation well before this report surfaced; Habbo Guides were in talk and development months before the report appeared.
The days of Jibbi, Callie, Lost_Witness and even ione were no different than today, to think they were exemplifies yournaivety, there still existed the type of rooms that Channel 4 are pulling Habbo up on, they've existed for years. Numerous peadophiles have been charged due to their activities on Habbo Hotel. Staff may have had more user-interaction then, and the competitions may have been frequent (which, need I remind you only a small proportion actively participated in). Other than that, nothing has changed.
Sulake did not pass the blame, they even thanked Channel 4 for bringing to attention the incredibly bad moderation that exists in this media, and they're doing what they can to fix it.
Habbo is not aimed, at 18 year old users who have used the game for 5 years+. They cater for you, because you do still use it. Their audience is young teens, they need to ensure safety for those first, they are not as bright, or aware of the dangers of the internet as you are.
I dont blame anyone but Habbo/Sulake for not finding out sooner and doing something about it.
Lets all be honest.. they knew it was going on, but just didnt act.
Well, I do hope sentences aren't all blocked off part way through. Why don't they just let us talk how we want, and force everyone to have the filter enabled again rather than the option to disable it? :S
---------- Post added 22-06-2012 at 11:00 AM ----------
I agree with you whole heartedly. If they didn't cut back in moderation and weren't so layed-back about it, we wouldn't be in this situation we are in now. It's ridiculous. It did use to be a safe community, where foul mouthers were banned in an instant. Now, when we report, all we get in "Use the mute tool" which isn't effective enough. I liked the days where the moderators actually attended a room to show their presence and users actually behaved with them around. I am dissappointed that as a long term player, Habbo has turned out like this.

People that are saying, 'Why don't they just introduce the filter again' and 'It's better to have disallowed words than allowed words' are just wrong.
That's what Habbo employed before, a filter, and it didn't stop the problem. If 'sex' got filtered, people just said '5ex' and then when that got filtered, they'd say '5e><', the same with 'cam' etc. People can always avoid the filter, and it won't solve any of the problems that Habbo now need to avoid.
Putting in a whitelist of allowed words is definitely the way forwards, no matter how annoying it may be to most of the community.

One thing just to point out, Channel 4 had contacted Sulake before their investigation was made public and they did infact respond but that was it, they did no measures until it was made public.
Oh my god... what about people who use shortened words... what about all the different slang in england america canada australia etc... what about habbo bwabys??? How can this possibly work!?

so much for .com being the pilot hotel
They wanted low numbers of people talking so that moderators could handle it and any bugs, and so everyone could be hands on deck and provide additional attention to everything without an ensuing **** storm.

Er.... Paul LaFontaine is quite dumb if he doesn't realize this sort of moderation will not work. People will always find alternative ways to express themselves and say what they want. Especially since we're such a "creative" community - something Paul mentions all the time but clearly has minimal understanding of. It doesn't even take much creativity to figure out a way to express yourself with what's available, that's what everyone does with language anyway and what people have done to avoid the filter.

This is honestly not going to work. Making a 'whitelist' is just ridiculous. It'll be easy for them to put most of the English dictionary into it. But then they will need to whitelist a lot of names for people, which could lead to a lot of people with uncommon names giving them requests to whitelist. Not to mention a lot of other words that people might want to use from character names, I mean theres 649 Pokemon names they better deffinitely add to this 'whitelist' :L

Also, I hope they don't censor my Habbo name, because that would just be ridiculous.

I bet the moderators are loving it, BEING PAYED FOR DOING NOTHING! Then again, isn't that all they actually do?! They want .com to be the most moderated hotel as that is "what caused the problems" according to Sulake. If you think the .FI hotel is bad then who knows what .com will be like!

Additional info.
Habbo.fi have placed an FAQ filled with all the approved words: https://help.habbo.fi/entries/21622036-sanalista. They say the list will be updated on a daily basis. And "
Goods and room names appear in a list in the near future, ie they do not need to propose!" < Google translate lol.
Here is the chat partially open. You can train your animals anyway and you can get some "normal" words to say .. but not before you have completed the Safety Quiz. So ye, we definitely have to complete the safety quiz to speak xD.

Hi, I've been following this forum lately, I play in Finland's habbo more than in usa. I must say I am surprised people here actually think moderators would be able to actually filter through millions of lines of chats habbo must have going on constantly. i dont agree with the whitelist/blacklist either, but how can you stop predators if the person being hunted doesnt want to press report or leave the situation?
There's some levelheaded people here who realize we're actually discussing about things bigger than habbo here - we must defend our hobbies and games instead of yelling at habbo for muting us. Everyone knows no site is safe in this industry, and if we let news companies blow these things out of proportion instead of educating the teens and their parents we will soon have no freedom in internet. Believe me once this is over it wont take long before hysterical press starts targetting the next favorite places. What worries me most is that while we're happy we dont see how everything is taken from us since we let them! :((

Talking now works the following.
First you have to take a Safety Quiz, which is like the Habbo Way quiz.
If you have it correct, you can talk again.
You can only say words that are white listed. Other words turn into locks and are censored.
In the Picnick Area you can suggest words for the whitelist.
Shame, I'm not on Habbo.fi :L
I don't know how I feel about this. I definitely agree they should have filtered out the bad words rather than filter in the good ones. Maybe they will switch it up eventually. There was something mentioned about eventually having more freedom. Hopefully its a long process to get to that freedom, so people don't just go and make a quick account to do the same "bad" thing over again.

This is dreadful imo... I just hope when you pass the safety quiz etc you really do unlock free speech, and not a limited version of "free" speech.
I just think moderation should have been vastly improved. Habbo should be clamping down heavily on users that participate in inappropriate behaviour, yes that may result in more unfair bans, but that's unfortunate. Harsher punishments (Perm & IP bans) for date/cyber room owners should also be implemented along with the rooms deleted. Habbo should be aiming to build up a reputation as a site that does not show any form of leniency on inappropriate talk/actions - it would take time, but I think that would have been way more effective. Of course it would cost sulake money to hire a strong team of moderation, but that's a consequence they must face as a result of their past leniency and low-quality moderation.

If you haven't noticed, Paul has done measures to prevent hiring more moderators and investing on the ones they currently have.

Chat should be back soon lol. These codes uploaded for .com earlier:
+ landing.view.unmute.mainmessage.body=The chat is back in Habbo, in a limited way at first. Before you can chat, you need to read our safety instructions and pass a safety quiz. When you've passed, you can participate in our safe chat. IM forums and minimail are still disabled.
Shame, I wanted IM back first -.-
and this:
+ landing.view.unmute.mainmessage.caption=With how few words can you make do?

Nobody knows really, but when codes are uploaded it's usually 1/2/3 days. It shouldn't be that much longer lol.

I'm really hoping they do .COM this week seems like they are bug testing it on all the other hotel's part from ours. '-.-
tbh they would find it easier if they used the .COM hotel to find bugs and exploits, due to the size in numbers that play .Com.

Actually If we go by what you said they would find it easier to use Brazil/Portugal and Spain in regards of numbers :P
Of course this is happening. We didn't even know how world-wide this problem was. The main culprit is .com, so they want to make sure everything is set on stone and works like clockwork (in their view) before enabling it to .com.
Dont know if this has been posted or if it sheds any more light

I think what he's trying to say (looking too at his Tweets on the subject) that we're all going to be filtered to start with so that we can build up a good catalogue of words for the filter which will be compulsive for new users. Then we can earn our way out of the filter. I think the reason we all have the filter once the mute is lifted is definitely to build up a catalogue of words for it though.
I'm kind of growing on the idea, it seems to center on the re-education of users on what's appropriate. Shame we all have to put up with it to start with but I can see the logic for once
