View Full Version : Are toshiba laptops just generally rubbish?

Got this one on christmas day, the mouse key collapsed and went inside the laptop exposing all the board underneath in may so was sent to repair, same things happened again tonight so gonna have to be sent off again, and the same thing is happening to my sisters. Funny thing is it's only the left key you click that it happens to not the right. I could kind of manage with the touch pad to click but I might as well get it fixed, I'm just wondering if to just eventually get a new laptop. I've learnt my lesson, never buying anything toshiba again.

I've had 3 - with all of them I have had problems and I am a very careful person. 2 days ago I went to PC World to buy a new laptop, after much debate I picked a Toshiba, there were only 5 of them delivered for the whole store so I bought one. Get home, start charging it... it's not charging. It says 'plugged in, not charging' and I googled it and tried a few methods that were suggested, but by the end of it I knew I could do nothing. So I went to swap it for a new one, I made them check it right there in the store - funnily enough that one didn't charge either. So eventually I picked a Lenovo - it looks better, it works better and it was only £90 more expensive than the Toshiba, but I know I can rely on my Lenovo because my cousin had a very old one and that was still very good - this one has a huge amount of memory, it's extremely fast as well! Really chuffed with it, I recommend you stay away from Toshiba's - they may seem like the best deal at the time, but realistically you'll end up paying more to fix it.

Never had a Toshiba laptop however I've had an Acer in the past which was just horrific.

I agree with the generally bad comment, had Toshiba and Compaq laptops at college and they all had MAJOR faults with them. Basically unless you're willing to pay out a fair bit (or wait for a sale) then you're gonna get ****. It generally depends one what you use it for with how much it costs if you like gaming then it might cost a bit extra but the hardwares gonna be a lot firmer and last longer. I'd recommend getting a PC rather than a laptop because most things can be replaced quite cheap and you can upgrade parts plus for the price of a decent laptop you can get a mid range tower. Thats if you've got the room for it.

Toshiba used to be very good... after I got a couple of trial laptops at work recently I wasn't left impressed, they went back and we ended up going back to Dell.

Imo I think they are alright, just a bit faulty. I might be taking this one back because I keep getting a shock from a part of it and it isn't safe that :P

I've had my toshiba laptop for about 6 months, and I had one before for about 4 years, and had no issues, so I would just say that you maybe got a faulty one or something?

Hmm seems like everyone has problems with them now. I have it under a cover with domestic and genereal and for free they send it to i.t specialists because toshiba charge £150 to fix it. Hoping to get a new laptop but for now this is going to have to do :/

The chargers aren't decent either + my mouse bit has started to go into itself now, really annoying as it gets stuck everytime.

Had a toshiba last year. Gave up on it and bought a Dell vostro something instead. It's fab. It's not got a scratch and I dropped it down the stairs a couple of times too.

My first laptop was a Dell which only lasted a year or so - neither myself or my parents have been back since and we've had Toshibas ever since. I can't remember how long the first Toshiba lasted, but the 2nd lasted from Summer 2009 and it's still going strong right now. I got a new Toshiba laptop from my parents on Friday, for my birthday (it isn't until July but we're going on holiday soon so everything needed transferring) so hopefully it will last me for a few more years! Touch wood! :)

I've had a Toshiba Laptop for 5 years in 6 days time, not one problem with it, and it still runs perfectly (albeit the battery is pretty knackered now). Although I do have a Dell as my main laptop as of last year.

We bought a toshiba (as a family) which was kinda cheap and i hated it after about a month. Then I got a dell which was even worse LOL!! If you look after a laptop properly they should last at LEAST 2 years, should be more tbh.

I've got a top-spec HP atm, had it for a year and I'm still as in love as the day I bought it!!

I don't understand how people manage to have such bad experiences with people like HP or Dell? All our machines (mostly Dells) at work are on a 3 year rolling replacement now and even then we put some back into use because they still work fine.

My sister had a toshiba which worked fine until one day it crashed and never worked again.

Having said that my dad had a toshiba which worked fine for years until he eventually swapped it for a newer HP.

I'm using a toshiba right now and I've had it for over a year. I really like it, it has a big screen, the mouse works perfectly. The only problem is that it over heats quickly, so I can never have it on top of anything, I need to put like my remote control under the fan part.

This is what has happened to mine for the second time. I look after it and don't even press hard but as the left key is the one that gets used more boooom it collapses inside. Credit to the i.t company that fixed it though they only took 3 working days

3rd that, Mine over heats really easy and I have to balance it over a edge so I don't cover the fan. Jssy; That's exactly what happened to mine, It gets jammed easy and it's annoying :(

Sometimes the higher-end consumer Dell's aren't built to last. Their Business stuff is fantastic though.

Toshiba used to be fairly good but they've definitely been on the decline.

I've had two toshiba's, one of them the charge broke in like a week,

The other one screen came off the hinge.

Changed to a Macbook Pro afterwards.

I've only ever had a hp, that broke but Wed had it years. Then an Asus that over heats but works fine and now I have another hp, had to send it off as the battery was broke but no more problems. I haven't had a Toshiba but it doesn't look amazing.

Years ago you would of heard great things about toshiba. Nowadays all you hear is bad things :P. Most companys just try to use cheaper parts, I'm a man who believes you get what you pay for :P. Sure, a mac costs a grand but you never hear many problems (Example, I'm not a mac fanboy so don't go ape ****). I've had my laptop for around 4 or 5 years now and it's still going strong, the universal cable broke only last week so I can't charge it now but when I can use it, it works wonders. The laptop did decide to go on fire after the wires connecting to the monitor became exposed from opening / closing the lid constantly. If a laptop can last 4/5 years in my care I think it's safe to say it's a good laptop.

I got a dell pc a year or two ago (using it now) and it still is pretty fast. The only problem with dell is their support is pretty **** imo and I'm almost certain they've leaked my information (phone number, address etc) unless someone hacked into their system because the person who phoned me trying to get me to ship my pc to them had all my information including the order number. I had to speak to the police as the men phoning me told me if I didn't want to get harassed that I need to change my number, cheeky *******s. So other than their ****** support and security I'd say purchase from them.

Sorry for hi-jacking your thread with my amazing storys :P

All our machines (mostly Dells) at work are on a 3 year rolling replacement now and even then we put some back into use because they still work fine. People might say that some things which don't work i.e. the laptop button collapsing in on itself is a result of a crappy build but in reality it could happen to any laptop. Had Dells for years along with custom built PCs, they are brilliant.

From a technician's perspective, I find Toshiba's easier to work on. I've never had a problem with mine (other than the screen breaking but that was my own fault).

HP, on the other hand... netbook that decided one day it didn't like recognising HDDs, laptop with an unstable GPU and terrible overheating issues.

Having said that the newer Toshibas (mine is from 2007/8) feel cheap. I'd go Lenovo or Dell for laptops now. Maybe stretch to a Vaio if I could.

Forgot about this thread. Anyone know what part of the laptop the panel is? They rung back and said it would be 2 weeks. They said the mouse is not repairable so they're waiting on the manafacturer for a new panel? Is that referring to the mouse or the actual casing? I have no idea
