My little Burmese cat - Robert Jones - died this morning :(

On June 23, 2012, he came in from the garden with blood coming from his mouth. Oddly, he kept clawing at his tongue which was making it worse, to the extent that blood was all over the floor. So we took him straight to the vets.

They immediately sedated him due to how hysterical he was, and late Saturday afternoon, they stitched his tongue back together.

On Sunday, when he was brought out of the anaesthesia, he proceeded to claw the stiches out and therefore we were back at square one. They repeated what they did on Saturday although this time they put little boxing gloves on him so he couldn't undo the stitches. He also had a drip feed attached to his neck due to him being unable to eat with his mouth.

After being reviewed by a few more veterinarians, they gave a diagnosis of "Feline orofacial pain syndrome" but wanted him to be seen by a specialist.

So on Tuesday, we anxiously waited as he was taken up to Liverpool University where he was seen by a specialist. We were told he may have to have a brain scan to check for any underlying mental issues. We were releived when were given good news from the specialist, who told us that he suffered no underlying mental problems and expected Robbie to make a quick and full recovery. He came back to our home town that evening and my Dad went to see him and he was looking really healthy:

So, onto this morning, when it all went wrong. We were told that his food tube became blocked during the night and it needed to be replaced. In order for them to do this, he had to be anaesthetized once again. We thought very little of it, until my Dad got a call saying that he had failed to come out of the anaesthesia...

He was 7

R.I.P Robbie, I will really ******* miss you! :|

I just wish I'd been able to say goodbye...

Thanks guys, I really needed to vent how I feel in full and typing it all out has really helped me. Your condolences mean a lot! <3

@Gina, it's strange isn't it? Losing a pet you're close to feels just like losing a human family member...

I've cried a good few times today, the first time I've cried in years too!

awwwww that really sucks, especially when he seemed to be coming out of it :( my dog died recently too but he was really old so it was expected, must be really difficult when you had no ideas :(

@laura Thanks and sorry for your loss! I think the reason we've all found it so painful is because of how unexpected it was. If he had a tumour or cancer, I would've been able to take the time to mentally prepare myself for his eventual death. It was sudden and unfair, he was too young.

Sometimes I feel a pet can be harder to lose than a person, my dog died about 3 years ago and I couldn't get over it for weeks, especially growing up along side it.
RIP Robbie and hope your alright

Aww, sad news indeed :blue_sad
My dog I had all my life since I was a few months old, she got put to sleep a few weeks, I know how you feel right now, I still haven't gotten over it, our pets are just like family members so close to us, they live with us so it's hard when they do go.

Sorry for your loss, i'm sure it will get easier.

I understand where you're coming from and totally sympathize. I've been in bits all day. I'll forget for a few minutes then something will make me think of Robbie and before you know it, tears are once again streaming down my face :(

To everybody who has replied, you don't understand how much your condolences are helping; they really are helping a great deal! And it's also comforting being able to hear first hand that many of you have had to deal with similar occurrences. I'm not okay but I understand that time does heal, thanks again! <3

This made me really sad :( I hope you're ok!

My cat is truly evil and I tell all of my friends how much I hate him, but I would be heartbroken if he suddenly died..

Edit: Have you/will you give him a proper funeral? It helped us get over it when our old cat died.

Aww thats so sad :(

Its so bad to lose a pet, the dog which I'd grown up with died a couple of years ago- I literally couldn't take it. It seems really cliché, but after spending years with them they become more than just a pet, they become a best friend, or family. Almost like they're human!

RIP Robbie :(

Oh wow, reading that really upset me. You poor thing :( It's so saddening when an animal dies. We have a lot of rabbits and I don't see them very often, but when I found out one had died it was so upseting, to think I barely knew the animal and it hurt me so bad :( I remember when our dog died, we'd had him for 13 years it was awful. He has not been acting like himself all morning and after my mum left him out, he just never came back, so we can only suspect he passed away somewhere peacefully :(

Aww poor cat, I know how you feel about not saying good bye, my cat went missing and then came back a couple of weeks/months later, she then vanished and was never seen again, she was old so we knew it would have probably been the end! It does hurt not seeing them all the time like you're used to and it's a real shame that he didn't come round. RIP Robbie xxx :(.

Always hate when Cats/Dogs die. Shame it died under anaesthesia though, but I guess it's better than what happened to my dog (Trachea collapse).

Hope you're holding up.

He really was, he leaves a brother behind too, William. He seems so confused. We have a dog but it's not the same for Will, he walks around meowing looking Robert all day and night... Picture of the three of them:

Thankyou for your kind comments everybody! :) <3

Me and my Dad have just been to the vets to say goodbye before he's cremated.

I got to give him a cuddle and kiss and hold him for a bit, he was so cold :(...

Both of us did a fair bit of crying, I've not seen my Dad cry for many years.

It is clear to me now that they did all they could for him and that they weren't negligent at all.

We plan to have his ashes on the fireplace, inside a jewelled urn with his name and date of birth and death engraved on it.

Eventually, we hope to maybe get another cat for William to play with and for us to fall in love with all over again...

Goodnight Robbie :( <3 I will miss you...

All of it, including your comments were so heart breaking to read and I had a little cry. I feel so sorry for you, I don't even know what I'd do if I lost either of my two cats- especially Onyx as (I know this sounds sad but idrc) she's like a best friend to me. In the past I've had a little cry just thinking about her death and I just don't know what I would do. Robbie was truly a beautiful cat and he was lucky to have such a loving family! Stay strong.
