Completely irresponsible, they knew what they were doing and the police acted upon their good intentions (that somewhere a 3 year old is with their ill mother) yet these two made a hoax call which wasted their efforts.
That said, my older brother dialled 999 when he was 2 or 3 :P

Yeh but, when someone is 2 or 3 they wont really think about the consequences. But the girls were 10 and should have known better.

That's beyond irresponsible, how stupid can they get.
Conspiracy.

What IDIOTS O_________O I know they're ten but SURELY they should have had the brains to figure out this was irresponsible and awful. My cousin is ten and I know he would never do that. Disgusting.
What if something like this really did happen and the police were looking for these idiots?

Wow. Hello future generations o/
Seriously, pathetic. I can't believe 10 year old children would do that. "Spoken to" isn't good enough in my opinion, although I can't think of a reasonable punishment.

I know a lot of time was wasted but they'll learn from their mistakes. I made prank phone calls in the past and although they weren't to emergency services, they were to support lines which wasted and abused a lot of professional time that could of been used on someone who genuinely needed help and although it was funny at the time, I regret it. I told the lovely lady on the phone that my friends insulted me and I couldn't go swimming because I had big floppy boobs.

yeah, i remember being in first year and calling childline and making up things that were happening to you was a very common thing to happen. i remember a lot of our class would generally join in, but i can honestly say i didn't. i have done things when i was little like ringing up the emergency services just to hear the person ask if i had an emergency or whatever they'd ask, but i'd quickly hang up. i think i was told things like they'd arrest you if you rang them up, even without speaking. of course those children were REALLY stupid to have done that and should be punished, but at the end of the day i think they were just being curious as to what would happen.

I think those girls should have received harsher punishment. It's not like they just phoned and made a joke, then hung up. They were talking for an entire 33 minutes, fabricating a serious story about a girl and her unconscious mother, which ended up sparking a a news conference and pleas for help in a search by the Ambulance Service.
@ To people in the UK, how do you get away with calling 911/999 and hanging up? Here in Canada, and I assume in the United States too, if you call 911 and hang up without even saying anything a police car responds anyway, and you get in some serious trouble, can even be charged.

I thought, even if you do ring 999 here and hang up, that they still come to you anyway just in case there is a genuine emergency? I'm not sure if they'd only track down the location of the phone number after you'd chosen police/fire/ambulance or what. 'Cause I'm 90% they don't just leave it be.
You don't get charged for the first time I believe, you just got a "telling off". If you did it repeatedly I'd imagine you'd get fined or something for wasting police/fire/medical 'time'.

This hoax call went way too far. I’ve no idea how you punish children of this age, but in my opinion a warning isn’t enough and neither is taking away privileges. The services we have, work very hard and we constantly hear of cuts taking place.
I am very curious as to what the girl’s parents; the police and partner agencies consider being appropriate action?

Idiots, why prank call the emergency services?

Idiots, they should get some sort of fine for the time they wasted.

I would suggest a custodial sentance that was suspended so as not to begin until they turn 18.
they should be executed. lol jokes, but yeah, they should have got a harsher punishment

erm ,one question. how can you fine a 10 year old? they aren't making an income and therefore wont be able to pay it. yeah you could get their parents to pay it but how's that punishing the kids?
I say put them in some sort of summer school or something, take their summer away.

They were completely and utterly stupid, anyone defending this children in my opinion is wrong. At the end of the day, they were on the phone to the emergency services for 33 minutes! Its one thing ringing up and not saying anything, i'm sure most people have done that, out of curiousity as to what would happen (I've done it 3-4 times by accident because of the trackpad on my old Blackberry would always hit the emergency button in my pocket, but I'd always pick up the phone and apologize after about 30 seconds because I realized id done it).
I think they should be put on trial when they are of an appropriate age, and given something like community service, to give back time (which essentially is what they took).
There sick.

That's exactly what would happen, the parents will take the punishment as they are the legal guardians of those children (obviously if they had done something else like killed someone the child would be imprisoned, not the parent :P). The fine would be an disincentive for the parent to let it happen again, and seen as a way of letting them punish the child or at least teach them (not beat them up, that would be illegal).
It seems children across the country are doing stupid things now that they are off from Summer. Anyone who can remember the news articles of children throwing boulders at cars on the A12 in Essex might be fascinated to know it has happened yet again:

All the kids nowadays seem to turn into little ***** and I'd hate to think what the future of the country is gonna be like in 30 years

When will these kids realise, that throwing boulders from a bridge could cause multiple deaths, and how would they react to their parents or a relative being innocent victims of such an event. They know it’s dangerous, believe they can get away with it, and if caught will most likely just get a warning.
There needs to be a punishment that fits the crime, a punishment that will deter others from doing the same!

What would you suggest? The idea that they personally meet their victims could be an idea, if the victims allow it. I think that form of punishment was used for people who burgled houses and were put in prison, and while there they are asked to meet their victims. Sometimes it works to clear the air and make an example, others just think it's stupid.
There has to be better punishments than tying them to a tonne boulder and chucking them over the edge :P

Perhaps a ball and chain might be better? :P No seriously, I wish I had an answer, but I don’t :(
Maybe we just need parents to gain better parenting skills, it might be a start. Although it's not always poor parenting, but more about hanging around with the wrong crowd.
Correct me if I am wrong, but at the age of 10 you can face criminal charges?

Indeed you can. Criminal responsibiility begins at the age of 10 (not something you celebrate on your 10th birthday like you would being legally allowed to drink at 17 :P)
Any monetary charges tend to come out of the pockets of the parents, while imprisonment tends to be in secure, usually privately owned, prisons.
I always find it hard discussing the responsibility of parents. Some children could be angels, and suddenly they do something stupid. It may not even be the fault of running with the wrong crowd either. It is literally a case-by-case basis. Some parents are awful, some simply do not know what their children are like and believe their children have been brought up right.

Yes I fully agree, you can have great parents, who have raised their children to be law abiding citizens, and they still go off the rails and commit crimes, some very good examples can be found during the riots in London. As you say each case is different. I personally don’t know what the correct suitable punishment should be, and imposing a fine on the parents isn’t right either, that only really leaves a criminal record, unless you know better ;)
