Right ok.

There's been talk of it on the forum a bit and now I genuinely want to know if anyone's read it and the other 2 (50 Shades Darker + 50 Shades Freed) and what you thought of it?

Ik a handful of people on here who have been saying they're going to read it but haven't got round to it yet Polarisation; :I and Maggots; Idk if you finished it).
--
My mum (:() has all 3, I've read a few pages from them and it's alright... some of it seems quite poorly written though (i.e. the sexual scenes lol).

There's a thread on it now yay. I bought this book like 4 days ago or something after Blinger; mentioned it to me on Twitter. I've read like 4 pages so far and it's alright but so far I don't see the hype and it just seems like an average book but as I read on I'll probably see why.

It kinda makes me sick that young kids are allowed to purchase and there's a huge hype over reading it.

50 shades of grey is poorly written fanfiction of a poorly written book. Can't really say much more!!

Not only is the writing extremely poor, it's also a really really bad representation of the BDSM community and sex in general. Sub-dom relationships do not consist of I DON'T CARE IF YOU SAID NO, THIS IS HAPPENING, that's plain rape, and the way this book is written makes it look like rape is a good thing which helps build fun relationships. In reality, it's actually the sub who has most of the real power especially the power to make things stop if/when it's past their intended limits, which the author completely disregards in favour of some big bloke forcing the character to do things she's not really up for. It also plays into the whole hymen-mutilation myth which people tend to believe in and are really only just learning the truth about - for those not in the know, a girl's hymen is not "broken" or "popped" when she has sex, and any bleeding that occurs is because you're doing it wrong. There's nothing magical and adventurous about having your most sensitive area lacerated by a blunt object.

I'm not sure of the entire storyline personally, the furthest I can gather is that the man (Christian Grey? I think) is the dominant one and very controlling (as you said it's almost like rape) towards the woman. Doesn't that seem to be setting women back quite a bit, implying that they're to be under the control over men in regards to sexual actions and to follow what ever he "says"/demands. Might seem a bit of a weird view but it does seem to across like that and doesn't do women a great deal of favours.

I'm just annoyed everyone reading it is desperate for a film.... may as well just watch porn? No?

50 shades of "****** up". This is no twilight, not for young teens..not a great image to be promoting in such a global scale. The media hyping over it just makes it worse.
Terrified that they're making this into a film, I wonder what the rating will be..
What annoys me more is that the author portrays the character Ana as completely helpless, surrendering to the man, under his total control. ugh makes me sick

Can they even make this to a film which can be allowed in a cinema/theatre? I would have thought it'd be far too graphic and would only make an appearance online LMAO. Some celebrities have been so keen to sign up to the idea of a film though.

My 10 and 11 yr old sisters have asked twice now what the book is about urgh. My mum read it around them whilst we were in Malta, whilst we were on a plane and brought up the book at a dinner conversation. Was lovely to hear her say "I can't wait for a film to come out". >.<

Huh? I had in my mind that the series was aimed at females... The only guy I know that has read it is gay. That's why I say erotic literature is just porn for women... My girlfriend and my mother are reading it, and I skipped through a few pages and it looks like a load of crap. It's just so stereotypical aswell, I mean... a virgin secretary having it on with the boss and she falls in love and he's only in it for the sex?

If women enjoy it, fair enough. I've not read it, so can't pass any real judgement on it.

Apparently wikipedia says this one book (not including the two sequels) has sold more than the Harry Potter series combined, which is over 400 million. This cannot be right, surely?

Actually, ignore what I just said. I misread it. Amazon has sold more of that book then they did for Harry Potter. Harry Potter series is at 450 million, Fifty Shades is at 40 million.

I am aware that the book was designed to target a female audience. I am simply amused by the fact that for once females are standing in the spotlight for looking at-- erm.. reading porn :P

It's kinda a stereotypically well-known fact that men tend to enjoy visual porn, women enjoy erotica (literary porn). But it's never usually this open... I saw someone on the plane reading it. It's not even underground enough - EVERYONE KNOWS YOU'RE READING PORN

It really is, and people recommending it? It's like me saying OMG CHECK OUT THIS PORN CHANNEL in PUBLIC. If WHSmith refuse to sell pornography of any other kind why will they sell 50 shades!!!!!! I mean if it was a genuine story with a genuine plot and some tasteful sex i'd allow that but it has NO decent plot, it's just about the sex bits.

There is supposedly an "underlying" love story according to my mum and her friends... but from the pages I flicked through (k I read like 30 pages in a row because I was intrigued), it literally is sex sex sex haha. Yeah my mum told her current BF to read it :S. He would be seriously disturbed (maybe) if he read that book.

Sex sells good I guess haha. I'm sure she's considering writing a 4th one fgs. When that comes out we will never hear the end of it again (same with a film).

The only reason it's getting so much hype is because (from what I've read) it's set in a YA world setting, meaning it's got someone of teenage age in it (which doesn't deem it YA) which I really find disgusting. Really, if you wanted to aim in that market write something good.

I have no access to it because I can't even pick it up without someone in my family coming right up to judge me, so I have not read it. I'm not sure I want to.

I agree with all of you. The only thing worse than one book that has massive heaps of women (interested or not in the genre) flocking to it to see what the hype is, is that it's not one but three books. Talk about a package deal. It's even worse if the writing doesn't show a mastering of the genre, or even that they know how to write a book at all. :(

Just show you that our world media is becoming a sex-driven idiocy (for the most part). Can't wait to see what happens in the following years. NOT.

I saw that my mum had bought it, so when she finished I picked it up and started reading. I didn't finish though because it's a pretty terrible book. It's not just all the sex that makes me not like it, it's just the way it's written and the story which annoys me. It's actually the first time I've stopped reading a book half way because of how bad it was.

My mum bought the second and third ones, but she told me she wasn't really a fan of the second one.

Yes, the first half of book one is a little bit much. However, it does actually tame from there onwards. Saying it's porn and it should be banned is just a shallow minded opinion. If you don't like it, don't read it. Nobodys forcing ANYONE to sit and read the book. Those that have, clearly enjoyed it. You don't hear this much scandal about porn that you can find in just a few clicks on the internet and thats far worse than some words written in a book. Folk need to get down of their royal high horse.

Warren's right, it was a fanfiction (originally posted on fanfiction.net, removed as it got too dirty) but it became very very popular very quickly! When it got removed, a publisher contacted her. As it got published she changed the names (to not breach copyright) but they're exactly the same character profiles, but with different names. Bit of a skem...

I read the original on fanfiction.net !!!!!! It was awful, but it was 2am, I didn't want to go to sleep and there was no one around to talk to. I got sent it by a friend, by the way, I would never search Twilight fanfic ;s

Yeah, I couldn't finish it because I found it literally unreadable!!!!!

Just realised.. I was listening to somebody on YouTube talking about it a couple of days ago and he was just talking about how if Stephenie Meyer loved these books so much, she could write a fanfic of 50 Shades of Grey and then we would be stuck in this vicious cycle of badly-written and terrible books while the two authors (if you can really call them that, lol) live off of each other!!

Don't know which is most annoying;
- People using the book to "spice up" their relationships; I guess it's each to their own but I'm pretty sure a soft porn book isn't going to sort out your relationship problems long term.
- A clothing line for men inspired by one of the characters; I could understand a range inspired by a REAL person, but this is just silly.

Inseriousity.
10-08-2012, 10:53 PM
I'm not really bothered about badly written fiction if the story/characters are good but "romance" as the main plot never really appeals to me. Add controlling man/submissive woman into it and no, thank you, I'll pass.

Why do the parents of kids let them read these books? At their age I was playing with barbie

Sloths
12-08-2012, 07:49 AM
There was a huuuuge discussion about the ages that parents allow them to read these books, some saying that there like 13 year old was reading it... that's down right stupid. I've read the first two and they're not awful I guess but really if women want to read some porn check out the well written fanfiction on the internet there's loads of smut out there. Not saying its pg13 either but seriously if people are allowing their barely teenage daughters read it they are gonna have a lot of questions coming at them.
On the twilight point I didn't even notice it was fanfic til someone pointed it out to me a while ago and now the books are even worse to read

I really want to see whos in the film and the rating. Surely it want be anything lower than say 18..

Just found out MY 16 YEAR OLD SISTER is reading this ****. Why is it acceptable to sell this book to minors?

FlyingJesus
12-08-2012, 10:40 PM
It shouldn't be acceptable to sell it to anyone. I know it's only fiction but the way the sex is represented in it is dangerously misleading, and most people won't know any better than to believe that the scenes in it are how it really happens in sub/dom relationships

Seriously, kids are reading this?

To be honest, Fifty Shades is poorly written and very repetitive.

I read it just to see what the hype was about. I don't regret reading it like, 'This was a waste of my time,' but I wouldn't say it was thrilling.

Definitely not suitable for anyone under 18. I wouldn't even think a 16 year old should be allowed to get hold of this material.

It was originally a Twilight fanfiction written by E L James, so that should tell you something about how good it is :P
