Jury Service

Hey

So I got a letter recently saying I've got to do jury service! I'm not bothered cos I havent been doing much anyway. I hope it's not a boring case! Anyone else done jury service before? Would you like to do it or is it not something that interests you?

I think it could be quite interesting to do really! Never been called up to do it, but you never know one day haha. I think it depends on the case really. Some would be really obvious I presume without much thought being needed, but then there are cases which could go either way I guess where a lot of peoples futures rest in your hands haha. Its quite an interesting subject really. Hope you enjoy it anyway! :D

Did it 6 or so years ago. Depends on the area but I never got on a case and it was probably the most boring thing I've ever done. It was at a small crown court in a very small town where not much happens and if anything does happen it gets referred to the bigger town nearby.

I spent 5 days sitting in a room waiting for a case to be put on, reading books, doodling and playing on my phone then got told not to bother coming back for the second week since there wouldn't be any more cases that only lasted a week. That was a blessing really, I couldn't have taken another week of it.

I was also told that IF I was selected to be on a case it's likely I'd get removed anyway because I was young. The prosecution and defense can remove up to 2 people from the jury for any reason they like and often younger people are removed just because they don't think they'd make good jurers, stupid eh.

So yeah, don't get too excited and definitely take as many books, newspapers and things to do as possible.

haha omg really, i already knew about the books thing but didnt know about the young jurors thing. Would save me some time if it did turn out to be a boring case so it could work in our favour :D

Pretty sure telling people where and when you're going to be on a jury is against the law... lmao. I wouldn't mind it but some cases tend to drag on and I have a tendency to fade into daydream if I'm forced to listen to something that doesn't interest me for a long period of time. I've sat in the gallery a few times but I imagine being in the jury to be much more draining, especially since you could contribute to ruining somebody's life if you don't listen to the facts properly.

I'm quite sure it's a rule since it prevents nobbling and such. For example I could know that my uncle is going on trial for smuggling drugs at the end of the month and now that I've read that you'll be there and you could be on the jury I can start telling you what a great bloke my uncle is, or offer to buy you VIP on habbo if you vote not guilty.

my dad got called up for it about a month or two back, and i think it is against the law to mention it ;) it is a very boring process as my dad ended up just turning up and sitting in the same chair all day for a week, it's definitely not exciting - good luck i guess lmao!

Someone on here was asked to do jury service in this very forum, so you might be able to see what they thought of it. I don't think they did it though as they had prior arrangements, but they were involved with the pre-service run downs.

Also, you're lucky :P Jury service seems so very interesting, but please for the sake of justice don't go in there assuming the defendant is guilty, which is one thing (supposedly) many jurors do! Hear the evidence from either side, listen to what the judge(s) say about the case at hand and what laws are involved, and take it from there. Easy peasy.

EDIT: As far as I know, the only details you must never give out are the names of the parties involved, the type of case and any details like that. When and where aren't a matter as they don't particularly say anything about the case. If people snuck in because you said these things they are at liberty to do so, the courts are opened to people who book to listen to cases - assuming it's a case with a public gallery. If not, well, they could sit outside if they want but they won't get any details :P

Another thing is, do you know if it's a criminal case or a civil case? ;)

My dad was called to Jury Service only a few weeks ago; we were really paranoid about missing our holiday!! Or at least, him missing our holiday ;)

In the end though they sent him home before he'd actually done anything on the first day. He said it was pretty boring, a lot of waiting around so make sure you have something to do. I've also heard about young jurors being sent home so that's quite lucky as you won't be called for another 5 years definitely (I think it's 5 anyway).

Having said that, my grandparents have NEVER been called, luck of the draw i guess.

My mum did it a few years ago and had to travel to stafford everyday. She said it was pretty boring. :P My dad was also called but managed to get out of it due to medical issues.

mum had to do it not long a go actually and she met some really nice people that she had to do it with and she said it was interesting. i wouldn't mind being asked to do this tbh

I didn't have any idea about that either and that's what they told me on day one! Really set the tone for a boring-as-hell week since I knew even if I was called I'd likely be back to doing nothing after a few minutes. I'm not exaggerating about the boredom either - take as much stuff to do as you can fit in a bag.

It's not illegal to say as long as you don't give details. I wouldn't mind being park of a jury I think.

Haha, we don't have that here in Portugal. Just in a special situation where both parts ask for a jury, we just have the judge.
