View Full Version : Can we try and stop posts that mention every username online at that moment?

I don't know how you'd do it, but it's pretty annoying, tagging me in a post ain't gonna make we wanna listen to the user's ****** radio show. Maybe the limit of mentions per post should be lowered to like five?

I kind of agree really, and it kind of defeats the purpose of what the whole mention system is for. Its for mentioning someone in a post, not for being used as a form of advertising and I agree it can get a bit annoying.

This was being discussed in the mod forums last night actually, and I know Matt did say there is an option to limit the amount of people you can mention in a post, and I think this would combat this well really. I see no reason for someone needing to mention the whole forum except for advertising, which isnt really needed.

I will speak to Matt about it :)

I actually think it's a good method.
Just shows that the member was using their initiative,
The market was there, so he took it.

I think its not a good method as it gives people unwanted spam of notifications. If you want to advertise something then make a thread and pass the word on to your friends about it.

I'm pretty sure you can turn the notifications off though if you don't want them can't you?

And it's not like they spam it, it's usually 2 a week, maximum...

I guess I can see that side to it too, how some people may find it useful for spreading the word about stuff, however I guess it does get a bit annoying to some people since it brings the notification up etc.

I guess I'll wait and see what some more people think before deciding whether to change anything. :P

wow it happened like 3 or 4 times not a big ******* deal all it does it shows up in your mention, you check the post, notice it's spam and cross off the thread.........

why do people get annoyed over something so small? it'll be gone within a few seconds of you viewing the thread.

I've never seen an issue with it myself. No point putting a restriction on it because as Jen said, once you click the notification it goes away anyway.

Fair enough it can get annoying but jesus christ it's a bloody mention, not the end of the world. From some of the -rep replies I recieved it was like I fed you lot a bunch sharp nails with a rusty spoon. I don't care if someone mass tags me, I ignore the thread and leave it, it isn't like it happens every day anyhow.

Kyle

lol I don't really see how it's annoying? It's one mention, you don't HAVE to look at it. FOMO

If it was a constant stream of spammed notifications I would understand your point but right now it's actually only happened about five times in the last few months so stop being so uptight.

i turned the PMs off, so i only know if i get a mention by the looking at the top of the page (or on profile). it's so easy to do, and therefore simple to avoid things popping up. it's not like it's an extremely frequent occurrence anyway tbf...

It only happens every couple of weeks or so and it takes two seconds to look at and cross off anyway. Not a big deal tbh.

In the short-term, you can change your username to something bizarre with characters that are non-mentionable :O

I did bring this up last night but felt nobody agreed :( - Sorry!

Can we not have the option to turn off the tagging feature? That way those of us who don't like being tagged in the posts can turn it off.

Kyle
21-08-2012, 12:33 PM
There's already an option to disable notification PMs.

Inseriousity.
21-08-2012, 12:33 PM
Yeah as everyone has said, as it only takes a short amount of time to click notifications, check the thread (to get rid of it) and go back to index that it'd be overzealous to have a new rule for it.

It was only a matter of time this was going to be brought up. This is my view on it: WHY U MAD? Seriously though, it's not the end of the world. It's not like you are being forced to read a thread every day like on some forums where they force people to read a thread before viewing the rest of the forum. Sometimes those are set so there is like 5 before you can even see other threads.

Although it isn't the same feature but being tagged into a thread is nothing. The plugin it self can be limited so only so many people can be mentioned in one post at a time. Although that doesn't stop them from doing it in multiple posts - I don't see the issue of it because it's not something that happens all the time. It actually reminded me to tune in last night so there is a positive side to it.

Anyone who will or has mentioned rules for it: no. We get told we are strict, we are harsh and then you get suggestions like this.

Limiting it will not work surely? If you want 5 in a post or something im sure radio are gonna be happy if they need to mention all the staff and they need to do about 8 posts before theyve done? It's a small notification and if youre fussed win VIP and go on invisible maybe? I just click the mention notification, you can see loads mentioned before you click it ao no need to get annoyed.

Currently no, we use a free version of the plugin. The "Pro" version which costs would let users be able to turn it off from everyone etc.

Another pointless feedback thread imho :P

In the past 3 months I think i've tagged everyone 3 times, once for Red;s room, once for Jellyfish;s room and once in that hi thread. I knew people would cry if I done it again yesterday in the habboxstarz thread hence getting richie to do it.

But as everyone says you get one mention (usually once a month) which you can click and click off within about 5-10 seconds? If thats really annoying you that much then you have issues.

Meh, it's annoying but you just check it and see what the mention is and ignore it.

I don't like it but never enough to make a thread about it. The thing is that quite frankly I don't give a crap about the radio station or some room on a game I don't even play (I know some people do :P) It happens infrequently enough at the moment that I don't really care but if it starts to happen a fair bit then I'd prefer that we at least have the option to turn off notifications for mentions or limit the amount of people that you can mention. Alternatively set up some kind of proper system where people can promote something on a limited basis that people can opt out of (e.g thread notifications that send a notification to users with a link to the thread, people could unsubscribe to these notifications on a per forum basis and you could limit the number of these notifications users can send)

If it was frequent then people would get warned for abusing the mentions (when it first came out I got told off for mentioning everyone a few times, so if it happens they'll just do it again)

It's one mention, chances are you're going to be looking at them at some point through out your time on the forum that day unless you're a loner and no one mention you apart from the big mention posts

Its easy enough to just ignore. May it be a mass spam post, its one single notification. Not 200+ so I can live with it.

Wow I can't believe people are so uptight about these. They don't happen very often and you can simply x it off if it doesn't interest you. I find them good. Like last night it boosted the listeners or when the forum is dead and people tag you in a simple hi thread, it generates forum activity.

I really don't see the problem. If it annoys you that much then turn off the notifications- its hardly a difficult or lengthy process to click the 'notification' thing at the top of the page to remove the mention.

It hasn't happened much so I don't think any rule should be inforced about it yet. BUT if it becomes a "thing" then it definitely shouldn't be allowed. At the end of the day it is abusing the feature as it holds no real purpose and it is spam. Users shouldn't be told to turn off notifications just because they are getting spammed.

Life's too short to care. No point banning something so harmless and easy to ignore.

That's what the site is for, as well as forum notices and the announcement threads. If we were interested, we'd look there, we don't need tagged to be reminded yet again.

I don't see a big issue with it right now but if this was done by a lot more people this would soon become a serious annoyance. I suggest you enforce something now before it can become out of hand.

Personally restrict this to Super Mod & ( A )GM. Anyone else doing this shall be infracted. Max 10 mentions per post (or similar).

If a Super mod or above deems this thread global mention worthy i.e. major event happening right now. They can choose to mention online users.

it gets on my nerves mainly because i think it looks pretty pathetic. i don't think there should be some kind of ban or whatever, but i think people should be allowed to frequent the forum as rarely as they want without being tagged in posts they will obviously have no interest in.
