View Full Version : Filtering.

Right. Can I ask, as to why.. hmm.
1) ** (Bull ****) is filtered as an acronym.
2) **** (Get the **** out) is filtered as an acronym.
I can understand the second one over the first, but tbqh. If users can say "ffs", "omfg", "tbf" et al, why aren't those allowed either. I really don't see an issue with them considering they're acronyms alone. The only acronym that I believe should be filtered is the one for "**** off".
It just seems a bit pointless really.

I remember years back, Habbox infracted you for using acronyms. I do agree with you, if some acronyms are filtered, all acronyms should be.

The reason is I believe is when you say get the **** out you are directing it at someone whereas ffs, tbf and omfg aren't.
tbf? am i missing something? tbf is to be fair right?

You could easily use ffs and omfg towards people.
Surely if this is the case, swearing should be allowed if it's not directed at people?

I'm arguing the reverse, if the majority aren't then nearly all shouldn't be (excluding the one I mentioned) :P. Unless you were simply providing an example and meant "and vice versa" as well aha.
Really, an infraction? Jeez. Glad I wasn't around back then.

Nice to see you back around Bethany anyhow.

Either one way or another, I'm not fussed. Personally I feel that the filter should be optional (It probably already is and I'm just slow).
And Habbox used to be a lot stricter on swearing back then, you'd get infractioned for saying gt*o, and you'd get infracted for actually filtering the word yourself (f*** instead of ****)
(Lets see if I get warned/infracted for this post)...

The ones currently unfiltered are allowed are because, as Sam has said, not used towards anyone and can't be used at anyone in my eyes. The g.t.f.o can be used towards someone and therefore rude.

The filter on the forum isn't optional and won't be anytime soon that I know of.

**** is rude and thats why it is filtered.
But directing 'ffs' at someone isn't?
Also, why would the filter becoming optional be a bad idea? I can't name many places on the internet that don't have that option...

The ones currently unfiltered are allowed are being, as Sam has said, they are not used at anyone and can't be used at anyone in my eyes. The g.t.f.o can be used towards someone and therefore rude.
But lots of words can be used towards people in a "rude manner". I can say "Gtho" or "Utter crap" and that classes as "of a rude manner". So I don't see why the other example is blocked really, by that logic you'd have to block all remotely rude words that can be directed at people. Also, the large majority of people I speak to say it in a 'jokey' tone.

Come on, how often is gtho used? :P Utter crap can't be directed at someone and is completely different from ****. But yes I do agree, most people use it as a joke but unfortunately it has to stay filtered because some people don't use it that way.

I use gtho a lot, 'cause I can't use the other one and it annoys me :(
How can't it be directed at someone? If they post something about themselves and another user says "utter crap", surely that's directed at them. Or are you on about them specifically saying "you're full of utter crap"?
If the majority of people use it as a joke as you agree with, why can't you enable it and then warn other users who use it in an abusive/bullying manner?

If someone says "You're full of utter crap", then yeah thats rude but if someone is debating and they say "thats utter crap" then I wouldn't consider that to be something that we would edit.
If this was unfiltered then we would have to start unfiltering other words of that nature, and then there would probably be a few problems!

If that was aimed at someone it could be seen as breaking the respect other forum members rule, rather than being to do with the filter. It depends what context its used in and how its aimed at someone etc. If it is done in a light hearted way then I don't see a problem with it, but the problem begins when people get offended/take it as rude and a line has to be drawn there.

They are both in a different context to the others really. I know previous Forum Management worked on a list of what was acceptable and what was not based on what could be seen as rude towards other people, the more serious ones etc.
The 2nd one especially is really rude and I don't see any need for it to be unfiltered really because it looks quite bad and negative around the forum.
I think its a lot less strict now than it used to be, and as people have rightly pointed out, a year or two ago, people were getting warnings/infractions for minor abbreviations, which we now allow providing they are not aimed at people and are on the list of allowed ones.

But there surely can't be that many "popular" acronyms that are blocked due to it being rude towards members. Honest to God, g.t.f.o is the only one I can think of alongside the one for "**** you". And in all honesty, I still don't get the rudeness issue anyway :P If a user says "**** you" to another user, then they can clearly tell what has been said to them and will still be offended, filtering off or not. There are rare cases when it's hard to determine what the filtered word actually is - e.g. "she is such a ****".
Members will simply adjust after a while anyway, that using certain acronyms in an abusive manner will result in a warning.

See, you say here;
"If it is done in a light hearted way then I don't see a problem with it, but the problem begins when people get offended/take it as rude and a line has to be drawn there."
and then
"The 2nd one especially is really rude and I don't see any need for it to be unfiltered really because it looks quite bad and negative around the forum."
Why does an exception HAVE to be made for g.t.h.o. You yourself said it's fine in a "jokey" manner, and even Chris has agreed that the majority use it in a non-serious manner. I cannot see how "g.t.h.o." is going to cause harm, by that logic "**** off" also presents a negative view of the forum because it's easy to interpret what it is.
Chris

I wouldn't say **** is popular and I hardly see it used on the forum. I would say don't fix something that doesn't need fixing. As it stands the filter is less strict than it used to be and there are a lot of other alternatives you can use if you feel you really need to tell someone to ****. :P

I suppose there's no true way to judge how popular an acronym is :P but it is widely used on the internet enough in my opinion.
I can think of 2 alternatives which provide the same sense of emphasis - "Gtho" and "Get the **** out". Would the second one still get me a warning?

Then why can't I shorten it to use it in a "non-rude" (not even sure if that's a word tbh) way haha. They both essentially mean the same thing, and the acronym seems less worse than me typing out the phrase (marginally)? no?

Why on earth would anyone say 'to be ******', more like 'cant be ******' as in *** (which i dont even know is filtered, guess i'll find out when i post this).
I agree with the current filtering though, the targetting ones should be blocke dout but the rest are signs of exasperation that most people type without even thinking.

I think that there will always be a difference in opinion between some people when it comes to the filter, however its something that is constantly discussed and its been brought up a lot over the years. Not everyone will be happy with it, however the important thing is finding a balance.
In my opinon the filter is working fine at the moment, I think the changes made previously to relax some of the abbrevations was a good move, however there has to be a line, and they will have decided what is and what is not acceptable when the changes happened last time.
I don't see it as a huge issue, and I think the balance is quite good at the moment and it seems to be doing the trick since we are giving out far less warnings for such offences these days compared to say 2010 when I was a Super Moderator. Its a lot more relaxed now, but to a point where it is still safeguarding the use of terms which may offend and appear as rude to other members, and also make the forum look and feel a negative place.
Unless a lot of people agree that there needs to be any changes, then I see no issue with the filter at the moment really and think it is quite fair. I will of course listen to any suggestions though however if there are any major concerns about it.

Context and intentions are important. B.S isn't offensive and is there literally to avoid you having to say it out in full. It's sort of the point of acronyms, especially harmless ones such as GT.FO and B.S. I don't get the logic behind why they are filtered when they're harmless, appropriate and far from rude. The Guardian even uses ** because the acronym itself has evolved from literally avoiding the use of bull <poo> to becoming a word in itself to mean that something someone is saying is far from the truth.
As for GT.FO, it's fine in the spam forum. You could warn a user or edit a post if used pointlessly in other forums which it can't anyway. Usually when people say GT.FO it's literally just that, they don't say anything else - if they do then the post isn't pointless and is fine.

I find filtering acronyms pointless when it's sort of their duty to save you from appearing rude by using simple letters. Leave the big swears filtered, but words like the D word and WTF, B.S, GT.FO and C.BF should be left alone, they can't be taken as offense in any society, unless you find acronyms deeply disgusting and assume the letters are rude when What The Flip could be what people are saying, who knows? ;)
Also, doesn't Habbo use a "rude" acronym as part of their Friday campaigns? Something like Thank F it's Friday.

really? you know some weirdos lol it's always been to be fair. to be **** doesnt even make sense, eh?!!!
Abbreviations were filtered that couldn't really be directed harshly at people. ** and **** can both be used in attacks while the common use for the unfiltered aren't. If someone uses the unfiltered abbreviations out of their usual context and does use them to attack someone then they'll be reprimanded under the don't be rude rule. That's the reasoning for it I believe.

Were all these words seriously filtered wow lol.
Pmsl? Ever filtered?
Omfg? Ever filtered?
Bobba - oh please tell me that was filtered, just for some bizarre reason do xD.
Loads of things were filtered, the moderation team were way too strict. I got a few infractions for typing ****ing because apparently the whole word should be filtered. The moderation and the filter are good at the moment :)

Not entirely sure... OMFG might of been temporarily when whoever was forum manager at the time realised one night that loads of acronyms could have swear words in them, then went on a filtering frenzy. The discussion ended with the suggestion that any acronym could have a swear word in there - you'd never know ;) It's where my sig came from :P Is the F a swear word or just flip? We'll never know.
really? you know some weirdos lol it's always been to be fair. to be **** doesnt even make sense, eh?!!!
"That's B.S." is as bad as saying "You're a bloody liar!" It's an invitation to justify whatever it is you're saying, not an attack.
Inseriousity.

I think ** sounds harsher. While 'you're a bloody liar' is saying the same thing, there's something about swear words that just adds extra brittle to things. I think someone could be justified in feeling like both statements were a personal attack and getting extra defensive thereby turning threads into an argument and derailing the thread completely. We've all seen threads where they just turn into 2 or 3 people taking cheap shots at each other. Admittedly it doesn't need swear words to do that but I can also see why they're filtered.
PS. "bloody" lol, very stereotypically British there :P

But it's not really a swear word, it's an acronym which might contain one :P It's the same as WTF, LMFAO, it's an expression rather than actually something someone spells out. It's also developed it's own colloquial meaning now to mean "a lie". Corporate ** is one example that is used too often.
And of course ;) Bloody is a bloody good word that was once bloody well filtered! Bloody hell! :P

I only really use it in the feedback forum in these threads to make the word known. LMFAO was unfiltered ages ago! Does anyone remember when p.rick was unfiltered? That was fun :P
Yeah lol and then I got my username changed it
